The three Nintendogs + Cats games had to sold at least 100,000 copies in the last quarter (Nintendo only mentions games that sell at least 100K copies during that quarter). I wonder if it makes a difference that they released 6 Nintendogs games on the DS but so far only 3 on 3DS?

Nintendogs didn't take off because there were a million pet simulators after to original, no one cared anymore.

Almost three and a half million units within its first five months? That doesn't sound too bad. I wonder how it compares to Wii, PS3, X-Box 360 and Gamecube?
It's a decent number until you consider that 3.06 million of those sales were in 2012. That means that for the first three months of 2013, the Wii U sold only 390,000 units worldwide. 3DS does more than that each month.

I can't find quarter-to-quarter sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360, but according to Nintendo's own financial reports, the Wii sold 5.84 million units by March 31st, 2007.

Financial Results Briefing
for Fiscal Year Ended March 2013
Apr. 25, 2013

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/130425/index.html

Always an interesting presentation to read through. The hardware market share percentage graphs being a regular highlight.

Quote
Well, I think all of you are most interested in Nintendo’s prospects for this fiscal year rather than the past.
In the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in January, I stated as a commitment of the management that in the next fiscal year, with the premise of the then current trend of currency exchange rates, the management would aim to earn 100 billion yen (US$1.006 billion) of operating profit or more by reviving the momentum of our overseas operations.

Best of luck for them on that.

The E3 presentation details have been discussed elsewhere.

One last tidbit:
Quote
For your information, as recovering the momentum in the overseas markets tops our priority list, we are planning to place our overseas operations under the direct control of the company president after this year’s Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. Under this new management structure, the company will make its utmost efforts to achieve the 100 billion yen operating profit in the current fiscal year.

It think the company president referenced here is Mr. Iwata himself.

Are you sure that they don't mean the president of the overseas operations (the heads of NOA and NOE)?

I always felt that NOA had their hands tied because of the choices made by leaders in Japan.

No they mean Iwata himself. That's exactly what happened. Iwata is now the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NoA. Reggie reports directly to him.

The investor Q&A is now in English.

Interesting stuff on Nintendo's digital efforts, Iwata having more control on overseas operations, and game development on the Wii U.

On Pikmin 3, it was delayed to improve customer satisfaction. Development came upon unexpected challenges that required Nintendo to pull staff away from other projects. Iwata says that Pikmin 3 and other future titles were understaffed in the time before Wii U's launch.

Quote
The reason for the delayed release of our first-party titles was the fact that completing the games released at the same time as the launch of Wii U required more development resources than expected, so some staff members from development teams working on other titles had to help complete them. In short, the development teams of "Pikmin 3" and other future games were understaffed during that period. We do not simply have one easily identifiable bottleneck in software development. These days it is becoming increasingly challenging to determine the minimum development resources required for customer satisfaction. The point I am trying to get across is that currently it is more challenging to sell packaged software for around $50-$60. On the other hand, we can offer digital games in other formats. It is true that it is becoming increasingly challenging to meet the expectations of consumers who are willing to pay $50-$60 for a game, and it is difficult to break even unless a huge number of units is sold all over the world, so it cannot be denied that software development is becoming more challenging. Among such packaged software, however, the sales of popular games are much larger than in the past. Therefore, if we create more hit games, the software development business can still be very profitable. All games break even if they sell millions of copies worldwide, so we will continue to do our best to develop games which have high sales potential.

Don't know if I like the sound of that news. Looks like Nintendo is going to be 'tightening their belts' when it comes to software releases and that means less 'experimental' games or new IPs. Less niche game releases.

Hope it's not the case but that is what it sounds like :/

That was an interesting read and shows that Iwata or who writes for him is pretty in touch on the why but, not really a short time fix to ease into the long term one.  The investors on the other hand have really no clue.

Nintendo is new to HD game development so them being understaffed, at least initially, makes sense.  They're just now learning what everyone else did six years ago and I sure don't expect Nintendo to learn something by merely observing the rest of the industry.  I agree though that "high sales potential" does not fill me with confidence.  I can't see games like Xenoblade or Sin & Punishment getting greenlit under those conditions.

Probably the most troubling thing I saw in that Investor Q&A (besides Ian's spotlight on Iwata saying Nintendo understaffed their Wii U projects, which by the way is what I've been hypothesizing for months as Nintendo pushed all resources into the 3DS) is this:

Quote
I already communicate very frequently with those working for our overseas subsidiaries, but I will try to intensify the communications with them to make their marketing strategies and tactics more aligned with the management decisions at the headquarters. I will also inform them about the products under development on a more timely basis so that they can take advantage of the sales potential of such products in their business territories.

Oh lovely. Iwata thinks if NoA & NoE market Wii U games & hardware like they do in Japan (where it sells worse), they'll be fine.  Also, apparently NoA & NoE have not historically been kept in the loop regarding future Wii U projects coming out of Japan.  Yeah, that MIGHT have been a problem, Iwata!  :@

It has nothing to do with HD, just the same crap that happens on every new console, particularly with Nintendo
games. Rumor is that Xbox software is already months behind schedule too because moving people to different hardware always takes more time than expected.

I guess that was Golden Week? It's the only explanation I can think of for New Super Mario Bros. 2 to rocket up the charts by +78%. The Wii U limps over the 900k mark.

It will be fun to watch how well or bad titles like Mario Kart, Wii Fit U, Wii U Sports and Smash will do.

You know what I'd like to see in a new Wii sports? A ninja star Vs sword game. One person who chucks the stars while another goes all Jedi night and deflects everything. There better be a new Wii sports this year! Hmmm... Never thought I'd say that.

That was for Golden Week, yeah. (Surprised the Vita didn't move the needle much as a result, quite frankly.)

And what software would have propelled the Vita to better sales this month? We just got Soul Sacrifice over here in NA, but I can't think of a recent major Vita title in Japan.  I'm surprised the Vita even sold that well, honestly.
