Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 429: Valkyrie Needs Bucket Badly
« on: May 12, 2015, 06:33:26 AM »
It was great to hear Karen on the program. Hope she'll stop by again sometime. It'd be nice to have Kim Keller back on the program. I was hoping she'd become one of the irregular fill-in guests (like TYP and Curtis). Plus she and Becky have their NWR show to promote, so with James gone a few weeks...

Long before Jon started performing, as soon as I heard the music start for Now Playing, I knew that gold was forthcoming. Not his best performance, but there were some flashes of dy-no-mite in there. I don't know if it was the material he had to work with this week or doing it off the dome, but half the time it felt like a struggle to make things that weren't rhymeable rhyme. The other half, vintage Diamond J was in the house and we should all appreciate!

If James is off Now Playing for a few weeks, maybe Jon could welcome him back with a duet of "Up Where We Belong." Just a thought.

I played the demo of P&D SMB Edition once. I liked it, but I didn't really get the strategy of it all, so it seemed more like luck than skill, getting big combos.

To Donald: The Tokimeki Memorial lead dev left as well. Due to the upcoming fiscal year (starting April 1), I think Konami is just taking that opportunity to end itself as a functional games company (in terms of console/handheld). Now it'll just be mobile/pachinko. Outside of Pro Evo anyway. Presumably that's too big a money maker for them to abandon it, but I would have said the same about MGS, so who knows at this point.

I think that 5 years from now, many of the old-school Japanese game giants will be gone. Because if the mobile milk and honey doesn't keep flowing or start flowing in some cases, they've got nothing to fall back on, because they've told all other gamers to **** off. If they have side businesses to fall back on (Konami's fitness centers, for example) they'll survive as companies, but not as game companies. It's going to be strange if Nintendo somehow ends up in a last man standing kind of scenario. What happened to these companies? Even chasing the mobile dollar doesn't explain it all. It feels like management at some Japanese companies is completely divorced from any reality. It seems like making money is their business, fucking over the employees that made them that money, well that's just pleasure (especially at Capcom/Konami).

You put Ty on staff, these things can happen.

Great things you mean? Having listened to the show, I thought it was well done. It was interesting to hear all of your respective backgrounds concerning fighting games, tournaments, etc. The discussion of Pokken was appreciated to see what the game is and where it may be going. Since I don't listen/watch any of the dozens of FGC podcasts out there, I learned a good bit about fighting games. Ya'll need to let Ty go rogue more often! :)

Why are usually 75-80 percent of the Staff responses by Donald? There are 20+ people on staff. Surely more can chime in (unless these articles are on a really, really tight deadline).

And why is Donald on staff anyway? Used to be, he was the cool outsider, running NFR, integral part of the boards, etc. Now? Just working for The Man. How disappointing. ;)

NX Preorders: I assume the $50 is just a deposit. If by some wholly unlikely reason, you were able to lock in the price for $50 by preordering, I'd be doing that right now.

Pokémon Rumble World: Multiplatform meaning 3DS/WiiU? Be interesting to follow. I wonder if the Amiibo floodgates for Pokémon would be opened for that game. The series doesn't seem to be that popular so they might not risk it (though they've released Amiibo-like figures for a past game).

Offtopic, but what is the Games section of the website for? I notice that the oldest games for it were released (or rereleased) in 2012. Is it just a way to catalog games info on the site from here on out? Presumably it would be a whole lot of work to add games from before 2012. Though not being a time-sensitive project, I guess it could be done a few games here and there.

To Jonny: The more I thought about it, the more it's apparent that there isn't any one size fits all solution to polls. If you could trust people not to be jerks on the Internet (cue "The Impossible Dream" music), you wouldn't have to mess with IP tracking or cookies (though both can be easily gotten around if someone wanted to, I assume with Google the important thing is the account itself. Once that is voted with, IP addresses don't matter as it can't be voted with again).

I suppose one could truly get around those restrictions by making multiple accounts and voting in that manner (though why would anyone be that lame). In that extreme case I would say that would be a point in favor of the NWR Forums. After all, if suddenly 60 accounts were registered on the forums in a week and they all voted for Choaniki in RetroActive, that kind of suspicious activity would be easy to detect. ;) But at some point you just have to use whatever method you deem the most necessary, since people intent on mucking up the vote will do so if they are sufficiently lacking in life. And besides, this is voting for what videogame to play, not the Presidency, so it's not worth it to plan for every possible contingency anyway.

To Jon: There are enough neglected Nintendo franchises to choose from, it's easy to be confused. Just imagine if you were a huge Capcom or Namco fan. Throw a dart at the board and you'd land on a neglected franchise with those two.

Though to echo Gui's point, while there may be neglected IP, Nintendo will sometimes surprise you by what they choose to bring back. Talking about F-Zero, I agree with what Gui said in a past episode discussing Nintendo waiting until a new control or new way presents itself before they make another. Just make the game! Just update the graphics, use your creativity for the tracks, characters and get on with it. I could see being concerned with freshness if you were pumping the games out, but it's been over 10 years. Just making a F-Zero game at this point is the refreshing bit, no matter how it controls!

No one in power at NDCube is that concerned about freshness in the Mario Party series. Why are some series held to such high standards and others not? If it's a question of finances, then just say that to the fans and cut bait. Don't talk about waiting for control schemes that will suddenly make the game worthwhile.

I can understand not wanting to repeat yourself (though this is Nintendo we're talking about), but when a decade passes between releases, if there is fan demand for it, you just have to give it your best creative shot and not wait for control schemes to bail you out. We already see how that works out with Rainbow Curse, not being able to look at the pretty graphics on the TV while you're playing. New doesn't always mean better and it's best to stay with tried and true than to shoehorn in controls just for the hell of it, which Nintendo has guilty of more than once.

I haven't listened to the episode yet, going solely off the show notes, which is probably always a bad idea, but using James Jones as inspiration, I'll speak off the dome as it were.

The last RetroActive poll got its ripcord pulled too late, now everyone has to sign up for Google to vote in the poll? Why not Twitter, Facebook or VK while you're at it. Did some unspeakable tragedy happen to the message board's ability to do polls?

I know the justification was to make the voting more open. You can already log onto the NWR forums via Facebook which most people already have. There may be more options, but that's the one I remember. It can't get much easier to vote in the poll. If it's too much trouble to sign in to the message board to vote, signing into Google is probably a bridge too far as well.

You'd think it would be a way to steer people to the website (if for some reason they listen to the podcast, but have never visited the site) and foster even more community. Rather than saying go anywhere but here to vote in a poll for a podcast on a website they probably visit anyway. Might as well get rid of Now Playing, just tell them to go to NeoGAF. Next time the telethon comes around, get rid of the site chat and tell everyone to sign up for Twitch chat instead.

It just seems like a solution looking for a problem. If the problem truly is having to be a member of the NWR board, then have a poll on the site via a stickied article that people can vote on, independent of the message board. If the site is somehow technologically incapable of doing that, then my esteem for Neal has risen even more, considering the site's backbone must be ever so delicate that every article posted is a ticking time bomb waiting to wreck havoc. If the site is capable of that and people still somehow can't be arsed to vote, then **** them. If a single click on a website is too much for them, then they don't care enough anyway (certainly not enough to invest the time to play along, presumably something you'd hope many of the people voting would do, if they haven't already done so in the past).

So I guess what I really want to ask about these polling methods is: Why? :p If my site poll suggestion is infeasible, then Google or Twitch away in good health.

Just to say you guys are great and I think the podcast may be reaching new peaks of high quality, but the RetroActive bit just set me off for some reason, as you've already surmised. :p

It's great that the game is coming out here. I figured it would, but you always wonder.

The indie title Boxboy! will be released on the 3DS eShop this spring.

What does the word "indie" mean in this context? In that case, was Kirby - Triple Deluxe an indie game as well? If so, what does the term really mean anymore?

To Jonny: You can find a long two-part podcast interview Al Alcorn did for the Retrogaming Roundup Podcast. Part One is here. Part Two is here.

Look at the timestamps in the Topics Covered section to know where they begin. I suggest downloading the standard version of the podcasts. They're fairly big downloads, but the 16kbps version sounds like they're talking out of a tin can. Occasionally, the standard version sounds like that too, but not consistently. :p

They've also interviewed various other people involved in 70s and 80s gaming, including Ted Dabney, who was with Alcorn soon after Atari was founded.

Great episode guys. Your discussions about Zelda Wii U, Puppeteer, Shapes of Gray and Gui and Karen's MK 8 adventures were highlights. And it was good that you revisited your State of Wii U thoughts from a year ago. If Nintendo hadn't turned things around, I have a feeling RFN would have had to change its name to reflect new topics. :p

Great to see Iron Man Lindy return. Sounded like he was speaking from London via shortwave, but that's okay. A reduced quality sounding Lindemann is better than most other podcast's crystal-clear musings. BTW I don't know why the Now Playing at NWR segment features only Jon and James these days, but I mostly approve. I feel that James and Jon's relationship has only deepened, if you will, as a result of making these segments a duo. Kind of an ebony and ivory thing going on, where does one end and the other begin, who knows? You could tell last week that James missed Jon in the segment. Jonny did his best, but lack of practice didn't leave him with his A game. Whereas even lower quality audio didn't prevent Jon from getting back in the groove smoothly. The Bear Jones seemed to approve and so do I.

Do you still have faith in this rumor?

Considering this 'rumor' appears to be based on jack and ****, why would anyone have faith it's true? I hadn't heard of this rumor until your article and it's so flimsy a premise, I'd hesitate to call it a rumor. Maybe a stray thought caused by too much caffeine given credence by people on websites who don't know any better, but on second thought, it's probably simpler to call that a rumor. :P

Honestly, I think the article would have been better off just asking if Nintendo ever releases a new Wii U GamePad, what would you want changed (starting it off with your own opinions/wishes).

I do wonder if they'll ever make a game that uses a second GamePad. Unless they can bring the cost of buying one down (let alone offering individual GamePads for sale outside of Japan), the answer is probably "not likely" due to cost considerations for their customers.

I had no idea NFC could hold so little. I thought there would just be a regular chip/memory and NFC is used to transmit that data from object to object. Not to both store and transmit. You could barely fit the original Super Mario Bros. on the most expensive NFC chip you (Enner) mentioned.

NWR Feedback / Blast from PGC Past! : 2004 GDC Aonuma Zelda Roundtable
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:04:03 AM »
I came across the roundtable, recorded by TYP, in my old files. The article it goes with is located at http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/2180/gdc-2004-eiji-aonuma-zelda-roundtable

You can download the mp3 at https://www.sendspace.com/file/v0k8im

Hopefully whoever is in charge of the archives, so to speak, will add the file to the article. If anyone has any files, etc. that went into the old PGC archives that somehow didn't make it in the transition to NWR, it'd be great if they could be posted or sent to the NWR crew to restore them.

BTW, if I could make a not-serious suggestion for a stretch goal for the upcoming NWR telethon: Get rid of Google Custom Search for the site. The problem with it is that it gives people hope that they'll find something remotely relating to what they were searching for. False hope is worse than no hope. So just get rid of it.

I searched for all the right keywords and nothing came up but a forum post linking to an invalid link from the PGC days. Even when I found the article by looking through the Interview section of the site, I decided to search by using the exact name of the article "GDC 2004 - Eiji Aonuma Zelda Roundtable" and still nothing. Maybe there's a way to add on phpBB's search functions to the site. I don't think it has improved in a decade and it's still better than Google Custom Search! So you could search the PGC archives using tech from the time the article was made! Break out the Wave Birds and we're in business!

The Friday before Thanksgiving is October 10th. Everyone knows this.

I'm sure that'll be Thanksgiving in the Lindemann household. I've always suspected he was a Canadian sleeper agent ready to unleash bagged milk on an unsuspecting USA on the word of the Governor-General.

I want a DKC where you play as K Rool and the Kongs are villains. All the Kremlings are anemic so he needs to get the bananas back to fix their iron deficiency.

Sort of a K Rool's Inside Story, eh? If Retro were Alpha Dream, your idea would have an even chance of happening!

A Mega Man review not done by Zach Miller? Zounds! You have to go back 3 years before you find another example of that (Andy Goergen's review of Mega Man: Dr Wily's Revenge) and another 3 years before that (Mega Man: Star Force 2 by Neal).

Great video James and Danny! It really did seem to convey the atmosphere. Seemed like a fun place. The mini-interview with the companion was a surprise. Did you know she spoke English or did you ask until you found one that did?

"As you can see, it[the booth]'s absolutely mental." I was thinking the same of your faces as they stood still and the background moved around you! :)

At first, I thought the audio for your voices was bad (to be expected, considering there wasn't a detachable mic), but as it went on (and listening to the first part, a second time), it sounded good and understandable, which is an accomplishment considering the conditions. I guess I just needed to get used to hearing your voices under those circumstances.

Again, good job and thanks.

Glad they announced this early so now I know not to bother buying the game until next year when Hyrule Warriors Ultimate Last Round comes out with all of this included.

As a retail product? If so, you'll probably be waiting forever. I doubt the game will sell so much that they'll release another full version of the game. Maybe as a Japan exclusive (if that), but I doubt they'd do it for the West.

Some of the DLC sounds like it may really add to the game, so I look forward to more details.

Hoohaa! It's strange/neat that all three of my selections have stumped the participants (Windy and Hagane doesn't count since he had to use Wikipedia :P ). I believe I described Game 3's soundtrack as a carnival ride in outer space. I'll have to re-listen to the soundtrack again, because it sounded like some of the crazier tracks didn't make it into Radio Trivia (but I might be wrong, again I'll have to refresh my memory of the music).

I didn't recognize Game 4's music at all. I had to play the meta game to get the last one. I haven't played the game, but the music was familiar, so I thought it had to be the latest one.

Another great show TYP! Radio Trivia is always a welcome treat.

TalkBack / Re: Multiple New Smash Bros. Characters Confirmed
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:18:02 PM »

Thanks for the heads up! I actually watched a Twitch streamer unlock him about an hour ago as well. I've updated the story reflect that R.O.B. is confirmed. After he was unlocked, the streamer said that the message on the screen (in Japanese) stated that all fighters had been unlocked.

Did Neal write the article or did you? I assume you updated to help out naturally, but I just wanted to be clear in case there was some glicth in the system.

I watched a bit of SSB 3DS on : http://www.multitwitch.tv/hamayama/gema_yue . I don't know if they'll stream again though.

It's too bad about Ice Climbers not being in there. Especially when a character like Dark Pit is included. Unless he plays very differently from Kid Icarus, he should have just been a costume alt. They have a great playing style that sets them apart from the other characters and it's too bad to lose that.

I assume Dr. Mario is there the same way Dark Pit is in there ("Easy" to put them in). Kind of like how four of the new characters in Ultra Street Fighter IV are from Street Fighter X Tekken. They were already made, so they just dropped them in with little to no changes (and it shows unfortunately). Maybe there will be some small chance of DLC in the future that Ice Climbers will figure into, but I wouldn't count on it.

I am impressed with the effort they put into the alt costumes of Bowser Jr. And I'm surprised (and glad) Jigglypuff made it back, considering the other Pokemon that were cut.
