General Gaming / Shocktober 2021: Just in time for Metroid Dread.
« on: October 03, 2021, 11:59:43 AM »
I wasn't planning on doing this again since there didn't seem to be much interest last year but I've been proven wrong apparently so here we go.

When does this start?

Shocktober begins right now, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything that falls under the classification of a horror game. Survival horror, action horror, a horror-themed FPS, anything with zombies, etc. In the interest of having fun, this can be more of a loose definition of what defines a horror game, and constitute anything that is more-or-less "horror themed". If you're not sure, just check out the previous years' threads which I've linked below...as you'll notice, a wide range of games are accepted.

For me, it's very much the same outlook as Backlaugust -- I've got horror games in my backlog, and it's time to play them. How many games you want to play is up to you, whether that's just one game or a few games. Any platform, doesn't matter. They can be new games, old games. Even horror games you've already beaten long ago and want to replay. You don't have to choose all of your games up front; you can if you want, but it's fine to just take it one-game-at-a-time.

Who should participate?

If you:

a. Enjoy horror games
and/or
b. Have at least one horror game in your backlog
and/or
c. Plan on buying a new horror game

you should do this!

The purpose of this is a little less about seeing how many games we can beat, but for everyone to share in the experience of playing something scary. A good horror game can be a tough thing to get all of the way through to the end, but with some moral support from the rest of the community that's going through the same thing, maybe we can all make it back into the light by November! That's what it comes down to -- having fun, and being scared shitless. And being scared shitless is a lot more fun when being scared shitless as a group.

One last thing -- for your fellow NWR-er who hasn't played every game, try using spoiler tags whenever possible for anything major that's story-related, or just in general anything that should not be spoiled.

Examples of games that count as Horror:

Anything remotely spooky, scary, or Halloweeny. You getting Metroid Dread? That counts. You planning to play through Luigi's Mansion 3? You sucked yourself right into a game that counts for Shocktober. Are you literally just planning to do the Halloween event in Animal Crossing? Come on in.

General Gaming / Backlaugust 2021: Round 2: Electric Boogaloo

Backlaugust: The Official Negative World Nintendo World Report Month for Decimating Backlogs!™ is back again for more action! So start looking through your backlog and get started!

Here are the "rules":

Games can be on any system, not just Nintendo systems. I know we're a Nintendo fan site, but most everyone here is a multi-console owner. So play a game on any system you want.

Let us know what you're playing. Mostly just so we can cheer each other on.

Play games you already own. A lot of people tend to buy a game then not play it, or play it for a significant amount of time and then put it down. This is what we're aiming for. Games that launch in August don't count.

Try to pick up games you aren't actively playing right now. Games you're currently playing can be allowed, but in the spirit of Backlaugust, let's try to make them games you aren't playing at the moment. Make it a game you haven't touched in a month or more if possible.

When is a game done? That's up to you! Mark a game off your backlog when you've seen the ending or end credits, or once you've seen enough of the game in a game without a "proper ending" (like an arcade-type game). You don't have to do or get everything unless you want to.

Finished games will be posted in the next post. Because everyone likes to see their accomplishments recognized. Just post when you're done and I'll try to update daily.

Last year we cleared a whopping 44 games and handily outclassed those fake gamers at Negative World we were competing against. Let's try to clear even more games this year!

General Gaming / The Winter of 2cold4gamez! (community event)
« on: February 17, 2021, 03:01:50 PM »
Beginning on Wednesday, Feburary 17th, I plan to stop buying new games for about a 40 day stretch which will end on Sunday, March 28th. This is an opportunity to focus on my backlog and appreciate the games I have instead of buying way too many games I'm never going to get around to as I often do. I would like to call upon others to do the same so we can make a fun community thing out of this.

I will not deny that this event is somewhat inspired by the Christian tradition of Lent, in which Christians embark on a symbolic 40 day journey through the desert by giving up something that's important to them. However, as many of you who are reading this know, religious discussion is banned on the Nintendo World Report forums. There is a time and a place for that kind of discussion and it is not in the Nintendo World Report Forums. If I did not believe that this could be a fun community event on it's own merits, than I wouldn't be proposing this idea.

How this works:

The idea is simple: Each person who signs up earns six points for the Nintendo World Report community. Any games purchased by someone who signed up for this between now and March 28th will cost the community three points. However, there is also a way to earn points. Should someone complete a game they already own, they will earn the community one point. I would like to turn this into an annual event so eventually we will have a sort of leaderboard to compare our current score to previous years and try to get new records and stuff like that. I think it'll be a fun time.

In the meantime, I'm going to set a preliminary goal for the community of 0 points. Let's see if we can hit that baseline.

Nintendo Gaming / poll: How many Wii U ports have you double dipped on?
« on: February 06, 2021, 12:46:04 AM »
So how many Wii U ports have y'all double dipped on? I have BOTW, Assassin's Creed 4, Lego City Undercover, Rayman Legends, NSMBU, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, TMS, and pretty soon I'll have 3D World.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is the last game I'm likely to double dip on though if it comes over. The Zelda remakes work too well with the gamepad, Pikmin 3 works too well with the Wii Pointer, and everything else just isn't something I feel strongly enough about to want to buy again.

It's December, and that means it's time to celebrate Indie-Cember all month long! I should've posted this sooner so you all could sign up in advance, but hopefully you can understand that life has been a little hectic lately.

What is Indie-Cember? Well, it's a lot like our other themed months here at Nintendo World Report. You tell the group which indie games you're playing this month, and then post about the games as you're playing them. I'll update this post with our progress as the month continues!

So I decided I wanna take a stab at possibly 100%ing Hypnospace Outlaw which is kind of a difficult feat.

But I figure there's gotta be someone else who's in a similar boat or is just looking for an excuse to get back into the game so I figure we can put our heads together and find all the hidden pages in the game.

For example, if you search "Bees" in the search thing you'll find not one, not two, but three hidden pages about bees.

Shocktober - A Month-Long Journey Through The Horror Game Genre

Some may say the real world is scary enough in 2020, but I won't let that stop us!

When does this start?

Shocktober begins on October 1st, and will last the entire month of October, ending after Halloween night.

What should I play?

Anything remotely spooky or halloweeny will suffice. If horror isn't your thing than there's plenty of stuff like the Castlevania series or Demon's Crest that will also fit the bill. This is basically a themed Backlaugust but the focus is more on playing games and sharing your experiences than beating them.

Who should participate?

If you:

a. Enjoy horror games
and/or
b. Have at least one horror game in your backlog
and/or
c. Plan on buying a new horror game
d. Have something remotely halloweeny

you should do this!

I'm playing through this on the DS version on the Wii U Virtual Console. It's been a real hoot. I like playing a version of Mario 64 wherere the camera isn't an absolute nightmare and the extra characters and stuff they added are real fun as well. I definitely want to dabble with the original more. I know I have a save from the Wii VC version that was in the castle's second floor that I could pull up to mess around with some of the later stages but honestly, the DS version having a functioning camera system really puts it over the edge for me.

The original game is impressive as hell for it's time, and I do feel it took a while for time to catch up with it, but as gaming has evolved more and more, it's age has started to show more and more.
