General Gaming / RE: Snake Eater???
« on: May 12, 2003, 04:48:26 AM »
I enjoy watching these events unfold, when questions and conspiracies arise days before one of the biggest gaming events each year -- it happens every year, I tell you!  This "Snake Eater" bit does look interesting and the video is definately convincing, but I'll keep my questions aside until E3 kicks into full gear.

Man, it's great being a gamer!

General Gaming / RE: Where would controllers be without Nintendo?
« on: May 12, 2003, 04:43:41 AM »
Let's say that Atari didn't sell out to Time Warner Communications and that, because of that business decision, Atari managed to keep the gaming industry going and, therefore, preventing Nintendo from expanding into America where it became a mind-blowing success.  Maybe Nintendo wouldn't have grown to its mammoth size if Atari didn't fold... (I love "What If" scenarios, don't you??)

Assuming that the industry would be alive and kicking, controller evolution would have probably been very slow... I'd say that we'd be a good seven to ten years behind where we are right now with current controllers.

At some point in my life, if my financial situation is in the green, I plan on opening up a club that plays hours upon hours of remixed video game tracks.  If you've been to sites like remix.overclocked.org you know what I'm talking about.  Even some of the current games, such as Timespliters 2, has a lot of tracks that can certainly be danced to.

I've actually thrown a party in my dorm room where I only played remixed video game tracks for people to dance to -- most of those that I invited didn't initially realize that they were video game tracks, but that doesn't really matter when you are dancing the night away!

Lastly, gaming music isn't as appriciated as it should be.  A club should be opened up where you can go in, dance away, rest in a small arcade room (we don't want THAT to dominate the club), and dance on again!

I don't have any details as to what exactly the club would look like -- right now it's just a concept floating around in my head!  So what do you all think??

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Timesplitters 2...
« on: May 11, 2003, 07:51:01 PM »
The music in Timesplitters 2 is so perfect!  The Neo Tokyo 2019 theme is just beautiful and flows with the stage and your stealthy actions in the first half of that stage!  The remixed Astrolander theme... <drool>  Most, if not all, of the tracks in Timesplitters 2 can be danced to, especially the "Return to Planet X" theme, which I actually threw on an electronica/techno mix CD for a party and everyone loved it (a few people knew where it was from, too )!

Aside from the plotline of the game, which is a bit flaky, the single-player mode is alright, but the co-op mode OWNZ -- that's how I managed to unlock the last stage for multiplayer use, by completing the game in co-op mode on Hard.  Besides, certain stages in single-player mode are just SO MUCH FUN to do (the Wild West stage and Neo Tokyo 2019 are my personal favorites for gameplay).

To keep a long story short, this game is the true successor of Goldeneye 007 for the N64, hands down.  If you don't own it, buy it, it's that simple.

General Chat / RE: frustration/depressed question

When I'm feeling down I listen to the library of remixed video game music that I have on my hard drive -- many of them, especially the F-Zero Jazz Collection and Super Mario World Jazz Collection, are very relaxing and allows me to put my situation in perspective.

If you are feeling depressed I recommend talking to someone about it, like a close friend or a family member.

I personally don't have a GBA, but my buddy does and since I got the WindWaker/Ocarina of Time/Master Quest bundle pack, I got a free GBA/GCN cable ^_^

True!! I totally forgot about that feature!!  Playing the original Metroid was great, especially since I never owned the NES game.  Playing that old-school game always reminds me just how hard games were back then.

Another thing I love about MP is that while the music sounds DVD quality, it's actually MIDI. I mean, that is the best damned MIDI music I've ever heard!!

Yeah, I remember reading about that.  That still amazes me, that Nintendo managed to use MIDI technology and create some of the most realistic-sounding music ever.  Nintendo R&D = miracle workers.

Like Locke Cole, I enjoy just sailing around, or get in the middle of the ocean and watch the sun rise and set...

I've also arranged the camera as I sail such that when the sun rises it is right behind the boat so the glare is right in your face, but it has one of those "epic traveling" feelings so it all.

Oh, and controlling seaguls is a national pasttime for me as well.  Oh so much fun!!

General Gaming / Controller Evolution: Is It Necessary?
« on: May 11, 2003, 10:12:22 AM »
I personally believe that the SNES and the GCN controllers are the best controllers ever made for a console system -- they even rival PC game controllers.

I understand that by changing the way a gaming controller looks and feels, that that controller can be immediately identified with the system it was made for.  However, there is some doubt in my mind as to whether or not the industry has to create entirely new controller layouts when former layouts were, in a sense, flawless as they were?  When it comes to controllers the quote, "Why fix something when it ain't broke?" really doesn't mean much in the gaming industry.

Once you have the formula down for a controller that fits snugly in your hand and has all the buttons easily accessible why change it??

That's the hype talking, my friend.  In the Big Picture, Halo 2 is just another FPS game that can be easily dwarfed by any number of FPS shooters that are currently and will be on the PC.

But to keep with the topic, I have to agree with you 110%, Metroid Prime is a classic in my book.  I wouldn't know where to begin praising it; the music, the gameplay, the environments, the enemies and bosses -- they're all good and memorable!  The best part of the game, IMO, is the ability to scan everything in sight -- learning about the environment around you makes the game more... personal... than it would if you just tromped around shooting everything in sight, which isn't a part of the Samus equation.

Damn, now I wanna play through the game again on Hard Mode!!

Looks like ZombieX read my mind with that excellent list of games-to-see!  Especially Startopics -- this is the first time I've seen someone make reference to that game since I've been here!! Very cool!! I'm glad that other people know of the insane gaming puzzles that that game provided.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamecube Wars
« on: May 11, 2003, 09:45:58 AM »
Multiplayer portable gaming has hit a few speed-bumps... I mean, I carry a GBA-to-GBA connector on me at all times so that if I'm riding the subway in NYC and I see someone playing a GBA I can go up to them, whip out the cord and say, "Yo, I challenge you to a duel in Advance Wars!!"  Most of the time the challenge is accepted, but now I only do that with the Mario games cause they take a lot less time to play than Advance Wars.

Once Nintendo goes wireless multiplayer for the GBA... oooohhhhh man, that's gonna be heaven for me!

Yeah, imagine how the gaming world would've turned out if Nintendo hadn't turned down Sony way back in the early 90s... We probably could've still been in a Golden Age... <sigh>

Wow, now you got me thinking about all the possibilities that could've been...

I miss Nintendo cereal...

General Chat / RE: Rick Powers; Jonathan Metts Interviewed
« on: May 10, 2003, 08:03:35 PM »
Most of those interviews were really interesting to read, especially when you compared the answers given by some of the "mainstream" gaming journalists, like Kent of MSNBC and Mirabella of IGN Insider, to the words of our own Rick and Metts.

IMO, Rick took pretty much all of the questions presented to him more seriously than the majority of those that also answered them, in the sense that his answers to the interviewer's questions were detailed and informative, with a dash of personal opinion, but not so much that it dominated his answers.

Yes, very good find, indeed!

Fight moblins (you know, the green goblin guys, some of which have shields); use your grappling hook to steal Joy Pendants from them.  If you don't want to head back to the dungeons, you can find them usually in the pirate fortresses (the wooden elevated structures that fire bombs at you) that are scattered all over the place.  Some rafts that have big jugs and jars usually have a single moblin sleeping on it, too.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: FF:CC needs more than one GBA?
« on: May 09, 2003, 06:38:11 AM »
I figure that, if anything, you'd have to get the GBA-GCN connectors because some people that own a GBA might not have a GameCube, and therefore not the connector.  Either way, FF:CC sounds like a great game so far and, being that I've been an FF fanatic since FF for the NES, I'll definately be getting it.

Actually, rodtod, you're right... the metal strips would ultimately corrode after a time if the usage of rubbing alcohol persists... I guess I could smack my system around until it gets the message across that alcohol is bad, but I doubt it'll break it's habit.

I've been a subscriber of NP (Nintendo Power) for over 13 years... and I can't really complain about the mag, except for the fact that it currently doesn't give away demo CDs each month.
EGM is a great multi-platform magazine -- you really get the bang for your buck with them.
I was also a subscriber to PC Gamer because I'm as much of a PC buff as I am a console gamer -- if you are big on PC games this mag is perfect; I don't know what's better, the honest-to-goodness reviews that they provide or the editorials or the picture-bloated (and informative) preview sections...

TalkBack / RE: GameCube Price to Plummet at E3?
« on: May 08, 2003, 05:09:57 PM »
Whatever happened to people willingly shoving out $199, $299 for a brand-new console system, eh??

I'd figure that Nintendo's lineup alone could spur sales as their latest franchise games are released (F-Zero, for example).  If Nintendo does plan on announcing a price-cut, I just hope that they don't drop the GBA:SP price -- that has very little competition and it's selling like crazy at it's current price tag.  If the GCN and the GBA:SP have matching price tags that could hurt the GBA:SP.

I agree, Paladin.  I wonder how much it costs for a fifteen second spot in-between cartoons on a weekday afternoon (after 4pm) on the WB?? For Nintendo, that is a pretty big target, considering the cartoons that air at that time and that most kids don't start their homework until they get their daily dose of Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon!!

I'm all Simmed out at this point -- that game took 6 months out of my life when it first came out for the PC.  I stopped playing when a computer glitch wiped out all of my data for the game...

If you haven't played the game yet, I say go for it!  What's six months of your lfie anywayz??

I wouldn't call "reality" peoplez "celebrities"... they don't make anywhere near as much money as celebs do.  To me, they are just your above-average Joes who were chosen to be on TV.

The game would've been better if there was a 1st-person view option... and I agree with you all, the graphics were bland, just look at the multiplayer maps.

That mock-up future Nintendo system is BANGIN'!! I'd buy one of those for $200!!

...I wonder if Nintendo R&D designers cruise these boards and read what we all talk about (and create with Photoshop, in this case, too)...
