Whatever happened to this? All I can find about a North American release talks about Q3 2009, which has come and gone. I loved Picross DS and this would be a day 1 purchase for me if they'd just release it.

No word on a release date yet.  I don't think Nintendo knows what Q3 actually means.  Just a couple months ago they put out a release list that showed Cave Story was set to be released in Q3 and that obviously didn't happen either.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Good news!  Picross 3D is still included on Nintendo's list of upcoming DS games.  The release date is still TBA.

Hey Maxi, instead of running the gauntlet of New Threads with absolutely no info in them just to be first, why don't you just post the impressions in the Media Summit Thread and then make the threads for the actual games when there is something to make a thread over.

It's kinda ridiculous to see 20 new thread for just announced games, and then when you look in them, all that is there is a link to gonintendo for some impressions.

I played this at PAX, but I didn't finish the puzzle because I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, even though it looked right.

Demo? Nice! I've been on the fence with these Picross games and trying one out to understand exactly how they work is what I've wanted for a while.

One thing that gets annoying is when I accidentally touch the splicers (sliders?) instead of rotating the object at hand.

I just started this today and have already put almost 6 hours into it. It's just so damn good, and also so damn addictive. Far and away game of the year so far (I haven't started Galaxy 2 yet).

I took it to my folks house and my sister borrowed it from me. She loves it. Made over a dozen puzzles on it too. It was funny because I went on 'gamer withdrawal' over not having it. I was playing it evey night a bit before bed and not having it left a void that had me indecisive on what other game to play in its stead. I ended up starting a new book because I didn't want to play anything else. I'm surprised how hook I got on it.

Yeah. I stay up way too late at night playing this game. It has that 'one more puzzle' mentality similar to the 'one more turn' urges in Civ.

I'm on level 4 of the hard puzzles.  The five minute time limits really piss me off. That's just too short.  If you are methodical at all you run out of time even if you are consistently eliminating blocks.

Oh that. At least you only lose a star for missing that limit, I've given up on trying to 100% the game because replaying puzzles for more stars is tedious (I guess I could do it for the handful of puzzles I've got 2-stared on Medium but Hard is just brutal in that respect).

Ok, I'm done with this game. I have done 334 puzzles. I did a few bonus puzzles on Medium, but I stopped doing them, and didn't even bother to unlock them on hard.

all the buzz helped push me over the edge. I downloaded the demo from Nintendo channel and I enjoyed it.


The original Picross was not strait forward for me, and gave me head aches. I prefer this allot because the controls seem so fluid and it seems to make more sense.


I traded in an old dvd, and spirit tracks and got $19 so I only paid like $2.50 or something for it and it's totally worth it for me.

I'm at 130 complete puzzles. I'm still on easy. Though I think I'm almost done. I;m afraid to go on to normal because some of them are already getting tricky. I've already started guessing a lot based on potential symmetry of the image.

The difficulty adds more types of conclusions you need to reach (on hard you need to look closely at the circled and squared numbers to see their possibilities), the overall complexity starts low for each difficulty.

I'm in level 7 of Hard now. I've definitely slowed down. I've three starred everything. I'm definitely not going to claim I haven't made symmetry guesses on occasion.  I'm pretty sure you'd have to be impossibly fast to not make guesses when hitting some of the three star time limits.

I definitely intend to finish this thing out with three stars on everything.

So, for anyone who's played this and the 3DS - could a game like this benefit from the 3DS?

With the Touch Screen and the 3D screen being different, I wonder how this would even work.

no way to transmit the user created level online to somebody else? I know you can transmit them to another person with another DS, but not to friends online?

Didn't and I'm very frustrated, but putting it down for a while now.

I have two normal level 10 puzzles and then the bonus puzzles left to do.  Then I'm assuming there will be another constructicon puzzle at the end.

Overall, it's just damn frustrating and overwhelmingly hard to get them done under the 3 star time limit.

I could see a 3DS Picross as a combination of this game and the Target Shooting demo.  That is, you have to actually walk around the object to break blocks.

I pushed the limits of youtube and I'm actually over 10 minutes, but I think I covered the game fully.


I am very proud that for the final score, I created that puzzle . Very clever use of the game to showcase it.


Final score 9 /10 : Why can't I send user created puzzles to online friends, the music is pretty bad and sometimes I would like to be able to zoom out, but outside that a very fun enjoyable game.

I liked playing this game, but the way the clues were shown on the boxes irritated me to no end.  I much preffered hor Mario Picross and Picross DS showed all the numbers.  Even more irritating was when the blocks didnt even show clues that they should have.  I did complete all the puzzles and bonus puzzles, but not sure I would replay the whole game again.

I have played Mario Picross and Picross DS.  In those games, you see all of the clues, seperated for the rows and columns. In Picross 3D, you do no see them seperately, you get one number, if they even give a number for the row, column, and z-axis(?).  The way they denote if there are seperate groups is with a mystic circle and or the mystic square. OOOOOOH really helpful. While most of the puzzles do have some symetry to them, a lot of them are off by a block or two. Which makes going for three stars on all puzzles a huge ordeal. Especially in the higher up courses.  Then on top of that, not all of the rows, columns, or z axises cubes have clues!!! WTF???  How did the developement team miss that?  It is really annoying on the puzzles that have a one block twisting pattern that has no clues on most sides of the cubes to figure out how it goes.

Basically IMO,
Seperated clues GOOD
One number for all seperate groups and surrounded by a shape is BAD.
Failure to have clues on all axises BAD.
The different backgrounds and themes, and themed unlockables GREAT

The numbers have to be on the cubes; it wouldn't work otherwise with how you're constantly rotating the block. Because of that, you can only give one number, which is why they put a circle around it when there are two groups and a square when it's 3 or more. And the game would be way too easy if every block had a clue. This game is similar at its core to the previous Picross game, but it plays differently, and because of that the interface can't and shouldn't be the same.

Because of that, you can only give one number, which is why they put a circle around it when there are two groups and a square when it's 3 or more. And the game would be way too easy if every block had a clue. This game is similar at its core to the previous Picross game, but it plays differently, and because of that the interface can't and shouldn't be the same.

I will have to disagree on that. Plenty of the harder puzzles in the earlier games were still pretty hard even with all the clues laid out.  As to your next point, I can understand that the 3D play field would require a different interface, Im just saying what they chose for noting areas with seperate groups was not a good choice.

It wasn't a problem in the earlier games because they weren't in 3D. Putting a clue on every square would mean 3 times the clues you have in previous games. I disagree that the way they did it was a bad choice, and even if it were I can't think of a better way to do it.

I recently picked this game up for $10 from Best Buy.  I really like it, but not nearly as much as the 2D Picross game that came out a few years ago.  My biggest--only?--gripe is that I don't like how not all the cubes have numbers on all six sides.  Sure, the clues that are given are selected so the puzzle can always be solved, but it seems a bit artificial.  In 2D Picross every single row and column shows exactly how many blocks should be marked.  It's not that big of a complaint and I can live with it, but it's slightly annoying.

Also, I can't tell--is the yellow thing that dances on the top screen happy or mad when I solve the puzzle?  I honestly can't tell.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

That's the game designers' problem, not mine.

Like I said, I know why they did it, but it just seems like an artificial limitation.

I'm really frustrated that I lost my copy...
 
I have the box, but since my brother recently took all the DS games out of these cases and put them in his carrying case thing, Picross has gone missing. I loved the game up to the point I had gotten to, and look forward to continuing as soon as I can find it.
