Movies & TV / Re: Khushrenada's Pretty Late Oscar Thread. 2019 Edition.
« on: February 26, 2019, 05:11:08 PM »
Still want to see the Miles Morales movie, maybe Vice too because I really liked The Big Short. Any other good recommendations? BlacKkKlansman and First Man sound great from their subject matter. I should take more time to watch good films again instead of shallow popcorn junk maybe.
The Favourite
I thought it was brilliant. It's a very well realized world (18th century England) that doesn't feel like it's been prettied up for Masterpiece Theatre. It feels real. The performances are just excellent. The story is very interesting and unpredictable. It's also very funny yet gut-punch brutal in parts too. Cinematography is creative and excellent (great use of fish-eye lenses, not overdone). Dialogue is wonderful, including some of the best insults I've ever heard. See it.

I also endorse your idea to see Vice.
It was my second favourite of the Best Picture nominees. Again, the performances are really terrific, script is great and the storytelling is well done. You don't have to know too much about the political ins-and-outs of the day to enjoy it. It brings you aong just fine. And again, very funny but also brutal.

As for the rest of the Best Picture nominees
Green Book is good but not transcendent. Worth seeing but no rush.
Black Panther is OK but you've probably already seen that.
Black KKKlansman is quite good and worth a look for sure. A very well made film.
Roma - Hot Garbage. One of the most boring pieces of cinema I have seen in recent memory. I understood what the intention was, it just did not work for me. At all. Shame too because I otherwise adore the rest of Cuaron's works.
Bohemian Rhapsody - Hot Garbage, including a distractingly awful performance by the Best Actor recipient. He was decent when he was singing but otherwise, ... oof. The guy who played Brian May should have been nominated for Best Supporting. He was playing a real person. I believed that person would say and do the things depicted. His acting resonated. Rami Malek (as Freddy Mercury) however, was not playing a real person. He was playing Mercury the "Rock Icon". Maybe he was let down by the awful script but I think some of the blame rests with him. And the godawful Bugs Bunny teeth thay made him wear. Poor guy, should have refused to wear them. They are in his way for the entire film. But all that said, I don't think the film could have been saved without a total re-write. So, to summarize, Hot Garbage.
A Star Is Born - Hot Garbage, or I assume so. I couldn't bring myself to watch all of this self-indulgent tripe. Clips were enough to do it in for me. I'll catch it when it's free or on Netflix or whatever, just for the lulzz.

Sounds like a fun little fishing game, especially the motion control aspects. Do they make good use of "HD Rumble" with how you feel tension on the line or the fish switching direction or anything like that? That would be amazing.

Attack of the Friday Monsters
Not world-shattering but a charming little adventure. Captures the spirit of being a kid, even if you didn't grow up in 1970s Japan, as I didn't.

**Minor Spoilers Ahead**

Well, I'm over 140 hours into this game now and almost ready to move to what I assume will be the end game.
I have of late spent a lot of time (obviously) grinding vocations. I made a conscious decision to do this for fun and as an experiment. It's been quite fun and I have no regrets but I recognize this is a crazy way to play. I have achieved the grinding by using traveller's tablets since they have no level cap on accumulating battles that count toward vocation levelling. I am fairly close to having all my chosen party members masters of *all* advanced vocations, and then some. I have found a few tablets that I typically return to because they have a nice mix of gold and experience that they hand out for battles. But yeah, I'm probably way over-levelled for whatever may come next. I also have a huge bank account at Alltrades Abbey. But like I said, no regrets.

I don't actually know where I am in the game. I seemingly have all the "regular" coloured tablets completed. Now there are "grey" special tablets to deal with (I think?) and you have to go to a special place for that. I'll figure it out when I'm ready to move the story along but so far I've enjoyed messing around with vocations and tablets. I've tried some of the download tablets too and some of them are just brutal. Fun, but brutal. Oh, also I haven't reached the point where Maribel could come back but I already know I'll let her go since Aishe and Mervyn have mastered so many vocations.

Great game. I love returning to it in spurts when I feel like it and messing around with the systems. Truly an epic adventure. Wonder how much more of it here is?

[post-shenanigans clarification: the following were joke answers based on my identity temporarily being changed to Ian_Sane]

1. What is about NWR that you like? Why are you here?
Nothing. It's basically a habit now. Like smoking.

2. If you could change one thing about your past what would it be?
I would not have bought a Wii on launch day. Or at all.

3. What is one thing you really want in life?
Nintendo to be great again. Nintendo died in it's own Blue Ocean.

4. If you could be anyone else in life, who do you wish you could be?
And give up all this? No way!

5. Which do you choose: A New 3D entry in the F-Zero series or a new entry in the Mother/Earthbound series?
Ugh, rehash city. When will Nintendo do something original again?

Maybe you should start a community paper out there for those under-served communities? just a thought.
You could be the next Charles Foster Kane

I read articles of interest to me from the twice-weekly local paper through their mobile app exclusively (even though the paper is delivered to my home for free.) I also listen to the local morning radio show most days while getting ready to go to work. I also regularly dip in to national radio news coverage through apps like NPR One and CBC Radio.

Let us know how you like that game. I acquired it for "free" with PS Plus a little while ago but haven't downloaded it yet. It's a huge file, 30GB plus.
Anyone else played it?

I bought a set of Yoshi Copper Grill Mats. I bought them to grill fish on the gas barbecue but I haven't tried them yet since our backyard is still entombed in snow. They probably cause cancer or something.

I think the idea is not only kits but free form creations too. Maybe I am wrong.
Anyway I think this has the potential to be huge. I think the kits are too expensive already but I thought that about the Switch and was wrong about it hurting sales. Also, Lego is freakin expensive but sells wonderfully anyway.

She's 5. She's not great at gaming, but she can play.
She can run around in Zelda, but the fighting is too much for her outside of Skelton warriors.

She loves the Marvel movies so far, and is super excited for Black Panther.

But back to gaming, she started playing in her tablet, then she discovered the WiiU, so I gave her my 3DS, abs we kept playing Mario games on the WiiU.
Eventually she ventured into other WiiU games, such as Injustice, Darksiders, Batman.

So then I felt if she wanted me to play games with her, we needed the new games, instead of me replaying old games. Now we Switch everywhere. We both LOVE it.
BnM if you still have the WiiU, go to the Wii mode, hit the shop and download Bonsai Barber. My kids were mental for that game when they were around your daughter's age.

Excellent "rad" review. Thanks. I'm really interested in this game though it seems a tad expensive for what you're getting. Maybe not. Shorter games can be a blessing.

Couple of questions:
- is the multiplayer local-only, or can you play friends online?
- your descriptions of the game remind me of Ollie Ollie in that the focus seems largely on pulling off tricks and you can inject your own sense of style. Is it anything like that?

Dumb, I know, but there it is. I feel similarly about games with "afterbirth" in their title. I've seen afterbirth. It's not pretty.

Is "afterbirth" a common word in game titles?  I've seen "rebirth", which hints towards a game that has been remade or reborn, but don't really recall "afterbirth".

Maybe Binding of Isaac used it, since that game takes a slightly gory approach?
Yes, it's just Binding of Isaac.

I’d absolutely buy Rocket League, but I’m waiting for a physical release. I may be waiting for a while.
Same here. Maybe we should play some more Resident Evil as we wait...
Same

Paper Monsters Recut (Wii U eShop)
This is incredibly shallow but I have avoided this game based on name. I don't like being reminded of paper cuts. I hate paper cuts.

Isn't JL pretty much review-proof? They'll make some decent cash. Probably not stratospheric heights, but enough.

Good review, thanks. I am officially interested in this game (at some point, when there's an inevitable sale).
I feel like if this game had come out for my Commodore 64 when I was 13, it might have been my favourite game of all time. So I'll approach it with that mindset.

Sandisk is the most reputable brand in the business, though if you can get that card direct from Amazon (instead of being fulfilled by them only) you'll have a bit more protection.
That link, as of today, now says shipped and sold by Amazon, so I think I will bite. I think yesterday it was "fulfillment by Amazon" only. Weird.
I hope 64GB is enough. I wasn't planning on buying the big retail games digitally this go-around (unlike Wii U). But I downloaded Snake Pass yesterday and it's already 4GB+. Yikes!
