Wow, I always thought this was supposed to be an RPG, not a Zelda clone with telekinesis. :(

It does look gorgeous and from the looks of the videos, seems like fun!

It was on my Day 1 list, but I've recently blown over my gaming budget, so it'll have to wait until sometime in January. Probably when I pick up NMH2

So Game Informer gave the game a 5.5/10?

Yeah, I got my copy of the magazine yesterday and couldn't believe the review.  I don't usually suggest this because I think for the most part it's just conspiracy theorizing, but It's obvious reading the text (especially note the "Concept" section) that this reviewer had a chip on his shoulder going into the game.  Considering this same magazine had some pretty inane things to say about Silent Hill in the same issue (among other notable titles in previous issues, such as Persona 4), I'd take this review with a grain of salt.  Can't say this bodes well for the game, though.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

mine is on pre-order from amazon. thankfully the release date will let me spend time with my family then play FF. ;-)

and there is a reason i stopped reading game informer years ago. in fact i've stopped most reviews in general. i am starting to think that people who review games for a living don't actually like video games (looking at you IGN)

present company exclude. err. mostly.

btw, the nintendo power write up on this was great. final fantasy, not my distaste for ign, that is.

NP summary from GoHobo user comment:
[Editor comments by Pro Daisy]

-The game is "very, very strange". Though that's not exactly a bad thing they say.
-The game is original and very fun, even though some parts "stumble".
-Wii Remote works perfectly.  [AWESOME]
-A lot of amazing enemy designs. A lot of work went into ways to defeat them.
-Many of the cool discoveries are optional, which they say is one of the game's low points.  [**** OFF, ACHIEVEMENTS.  The word DISCOVERY is supposed to MEAN SOMETHING.]
-Rewards for completing side missions are useless.
-"In fact, The Crystal Bearers may have the most lopsided ratio of optional-to-mandatory gameplay I've ever seen".
-Takes about 18 hours to complete.
-He found about half of the 330 medals in the game in the 18 hours.
-Could probably be completed in 6 or 7 hours.  [So can Ocarina of Time.  Speed runs?  not important.]
-Felt that the developers should have implemented some of the ideas that were put into side missions into the main experience.
-Fast paced.
-Story feels "underdeveloped", though is still interesting.  [EAT ****, STORY PROPONENTS]
-Characters are appealing.  [Selkie females are appealing]
-The visuals are very nice, and the best on the console.  [This is the best 2 lunchboxes can do.  Caterkiller, get an eye exam.]
-Environments are "downright breathtaking".
-Great soundtrack. Wasn't fond of the jazz pieces but thought the orchestrations were excellent.
-"A weird, wonderful adventure unlike anything else out there. You'll get the most out of the game if you go into it with the same spirit."  [whose spirit?  hardtard game journalists?]

8.0/10.0
Folks, I can finally sell my copy of Twilight Princess and my unopened GC Zelda Collection.  A Final Fantasy with GAMEPLAY.

The development team doesn't want us to spend more crap on crap we don't even need.

I hope FFXIII's team got that memo, but I highly doubt they did.

I'll get no such exam! But I am getting this game no matter what. Despite not talking about it much on these boards I am very much anticipating this game. 8.0 makes me happy.

Just happy SE put some real effort into a Wii game. I don't care if it's not the REAL final fantasy, though I do want that to.

a 5.5/10, do we know what Famitsu gave it?

Sorry, but unlike the PSX FF crowd I prefer my FF games to have a real storyline and gameplay. I replayed a bit of FFVII, stopped, and played FFVI GBA almost non-stop. I found that game more entertaining.

Final Fantasy X is the worst game I ever played.

I went to two GameStops, and one of them had no idea about the game. The other had the game out already. They were in the same mall. *facepalm*

Anyway, I put an hour into it so far. It's really interesting. It's like Square Enix was like "Hey, let's try to make a Zelda game!"
I kind of want more freedom to explore, though. It's extremely story-driven right now, but I think/hope I'm getting to that "Check out this big, huge world" part.

Good ol' James Jones is on the review, so I have no obligations to this game in that regard, but I'll probably put together some impressions tomorrow after I play more.

Your comments may lead me to further bypass my gaming budget this month.
I will be going to the store to get EA Active expansion for my mom tomorrow, so if you have impressions up by then, I might be picking up 2 games, assuming I can find it.

5.5 from GI and 6.2 from IGN?

Right around what I was figuring based on the gameplay videos. Looks pretty bloody boring.

IGN seems to have knocked it for the mini games during the main quest. Seems kinda whiny to me.

The fact that IGN and GI are crapping on the game make it more intriguing for me. GI flat out hates the Wii and Bozon doesn't like really RPGs.

This game is neat.  Does a great job of being a "Zelda-alternative" so far.

Graphics and presentation are very strong, and the progression has a fondness for speed.  There wasn't a lot to explore in terms of openness in level design, mostly some treasure chests off to the side and coins hidden in NPCs.  The level architecture and Layle's jog, which feels faster than Link's, prompt you to keep running forward.  Some running/chasing, auto-jump platforming and grapple/hookshotting go along with the excited pace of the cutscenes.

The stages seem to look better when you're running versus standing still for exploration habits.  The first person camera does NOT lend itself to exploration or staring and young NPC females.  However, the Dpad does allow Wind Waker-style camera rotation, so I do feel at home during combat and general travel.

Layle even has a dive/roll, and we know how much Zeltards love to aimlessly roll.  But, this dive requires a flick of the remote, and has a 2-3 second wait period between dives.  The rest of the controls work great, the swipes aren't excessive, and the IR pointing is solid.  Throwing **** around is EASY.  This is the basic process:  IR-point at something, lock-on with B-trigger, flick the Remote towards you to retrieve/carry the item overhead, IR-point at some object/surface, then tap B-trigger to toss directly at it (if not within reasonable throwing distance, it'll fall short of your target).  EASY, and I mean reasonable and responsive.

This game and Silent Hill don't support Dolby Pro Logic II.  They are on my FACEPALM list.

Selkie lady sounds like Marta =O

I forgot to mention, the majority of the NPCs don't want to talk to you, and the game uses icons to mark who has something to say.  AWESOME-O INNOVATO.  I'm glad this isn't an RPG.

Leave me alone NPC jerks, I don't want to hear about your useless lives.  *TOSSES FAT WOMAN*

I imagine at least 10 hours of gameplay for me will be tossing people in random ways and places.

It's a great way to take out stress...and earn money.

The best is when I saw a Selkie woman beat up a Lilty man. Then I picked up the woman, and threw her at the man, took the money and continued on my way.

Totally awesome. It's stuff like that that make this game not get stale.
