Wii U Mass Effect 3 Runs in 720p
« on: August 31, 2012, 08:51:07 AM »

The game will not feature 1080p visuals as previously thought.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31495

Mass Effect 3 will be rendered in 720p on Wii U, according to the Australian developer Straight Right who are developing the Wii U version.

It was recently reported in Nintendo Power that the Wii U edition of Mass Effect 3 would feature 1080p visuals. The CEO of Straight Right, Tom Crago, has told NWR that, "The game will run at 720p."

Stay tuned for more information about Mass Effect 3 in the near future.

Yeah. This is really weird. The NP article was very clear. It couldn't be read in any other way. They even mentioned how it would be the first console version to do it. How did this mistake happen?

Not really a surprise.

My guess is that you won't see a lot of 1080P on WiiU.
The system is low on memory 1.5GB is not nearly enough.
4GB or 8GB could have been done within reason.

For titles that don't use the low Rez game pad maybe.

We don't know how much RAM the Wii U will have, so you are just using speculation. Wii U will be more than capable of running native 1080p, but developers don't always want to spend the etra effort doing it. Very few Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 games do it either.

Don't we know from the developers how much RAM the WiiU devkits have? I'm not sure, but I think I remember reading that it was 3GB. But that's the dev kit, and the end user console is inevitably going to have somewhat less than that. If the Dev Kit is 3GB then 1.5GB in the console sounds about right, because that would be half of the devkit. It could also be 2GB, but its definitely not going to be any higher than that.

You do realize the ps3 has 256 megs of ram and 256 megs of video memory, right?  I played MGS4 in 2008 at 1080p.  If the ps3 can do 1080p, the WiiU can do 1080p.

MGS4 is 720p native, it's only upscaled to 1080p.

Maybe NP meant that ME3 is upscaled to 1080, but natively its only 720? If that's the case then both sources would be right (sorta).

Not really, very few Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 games are actually 1080p. If the Wii U version was, then that means they would have put more effort in than the other versions.

Why do you say that? Because some developer who nobody has ever heard of won't make the Wii U version of the game 1080p when even BioWare didn't make the Xbox 360/PS3 versions 1080p? I know you are joking though.

Amount of RAM shouldn't matter...Virtua Fighter 5 runs at 1080p on the PS3. Even if WiiU "only" has 1.5GB RAM, that's still 3x what the PS3 has...

I wasn't meaning to so that negative.  I'm sure the games will look fine regardless of being in 1080P or not.  I'm sure there will be games that run at 1080P, but between trying to mirror games on a 480P LCD and a 1080P screen, and running ports of games to consoles that run at 720P scaled to 1080P we may see a lot of 720P games.  It's okay.:)

More important to me is the art and style anyway.  I wish for more RAM, but regardless, I am excited to see this new platform in action.  I just worry that the lack of RAM will come back and bite it once new consoles are released in 2013-14 and it makes ports more difficult.

The PS3 only has 256MB of RAM, so actually its 6x more.

The PS3 has a pair of 256 MB RAM, each intended to work independently to accomplish different tasks.  Altogether, there's 512 MB of RAM, but developers have to program their PS3 versions to split tasks to use that RAM efficiently.  Some developers like Bethesda are just too lazy to do this, so they try to dump all the tasks on the RAM as if it was one 512 MB piece of RAM and the game runs like crap as a result.

Hopefully, Nintendo was wise and did not design their RAM in the same fashion, for it has shown to make porting between consoles problematic.

Virtua Fighter 5 isn't 1080P native, it's upscaled as well from 1024 by 1024.  Very few games are actually 1080P on either Xbox/ps3.  Most are 720 and a few like FF have 1080P video/720 gameplay.

Also, the reason why the screenshots of the WII U version of ME3 looks sharper isn't because of the resolution, it's the AA.  Most likely the game is running with MSAA at 2 to 4x which is way better than FSAA.

I have no idea why you would run a game at 720p when you can run it at 1080p which has a natural AA and superior effect anyway than to run an AA filter which will hit your frame rate all the same. Here is a nice article breaking down some of the AA filters used and their respective costs.

If they are still rendering ME3 on the WiiU in 720P, it seems to be that something has gone terribly wrong in development. If my computer with a Nvidia 9800 can render an acceptable frame rate @ 1080p, surely a streamlined console with none of my OS overhead can do much better with up to date hardware a couple generations ahead of mine. A lot about this story doesn't make sense.

I don't think EA is expecting ME3 to be a huge seller on the Wii U anyway, so they probably didn't think its worth the investment to redo it all in 1080. Its probably just a copy and paste of the PS360 version with minor modifications to make it work.
