Nintendo has revealed that consumers will have the ability to move DSiWare purchases over to the 3DS at the recent Japanese 3DS event.

While Nintendo has yet to reveal how the transfer system will work, the company did note that some software will not be able to make the trip over to the new system. In addition, players will only be able to redownload their DSi Ware software a set number of times.

I wonder if the 3DS will have the DSiware games avalable for DL.

I think this is a good sign that Virtual Console and/or WiiWare games be will able to be re-downloaded on Wii 2.

Yeah, that "some" part of the article makes me suspicious as well.  Still, nice to see actual customer service out of Nintendo instead of them just making everyone double-dip.

You are making it sound like only some games will be available. The wording makes it clear that most DSiWare games will be available and that only some will not. That means the majority will be.

Also, what the heck does Shantae have to do with this?

The fact that people take this as a "good sign" that VC games will be downloadable without paying again on Wii2.  We shouldn't have to look for signs of this. This crap is a REQUIREMENT.


If Nintendo honestly tells someone that they have to rebuy games, their entire digital delivery strategy is garbage and I don't think I would ever be buying a Nintendo system again for that level of dishonestly and stupidity.


So yeah, in my opinion, they HAVE to solve this problem so it is not just a question of whether or not they have the feature, its a question of whether or not the feature will be implemented well.

You probably won't be able to transfer games that rely heavily on the internal camera.

The 3DS camera is in a different place than the DSi camera (above the top screen instead of on the hinge).

Hal, have you downloaded any DSiWare games? If not, I should point out that AFAIK all DSiWare software can be registered (I haven't downloaded Apps like calendars and clocks). I have several third party DSiWare games and all were registered automatically, just like WiiWare games.

Pale, I agree with you that this is an absolute requirement and that anything else is completely unacceptable.

However there have been numerous times where I think "why would anyone ever buy this?" and they do.  I think "how could anyone defend this decision?" and the apologists just come out of the woodwork.  Hell, I get upset when ports and remakes are released in place of new content under the very rational argument that I do not wish to spend money to buy something I already own but I always see people jumping out of their seat when such re-releases are announced.  How often do we see someone complaining that such-and-such feature is not in the Wii version but they go and buy it anyway.  Within videogame fandom I am astonished of how much slack some people give these companies.

I am confident that if Nintendo did not allow you to transfer games it would cause some grumbling but very few would actually not buy Nintendo's next system or cease to give Nintendo their business because of it.  I imagine the majority would in fact buy those games all over again.  I consider it a requirement for Nintendo to do it but I do not EXPECT them to.  This was still a pleasent surprise for me.  I know most of the videogame market does not think like I do so such a move would not have as negative effect as it logically should and I know that Nintendo knows this.

Hell the DSi itself is a prime example of this phenomenon.  Who here or on ANY videogame forum did not know that the DSi was just a stop gap and that the REAL DS successor was right on the doorstep?  And yet tons of people who already owned a DS went out and bought a DSi anyway.  Malibu Stacy has a new hat and I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT!!!

It amaze me that people still think they own their DLC. But that is the whole point of DLC. Not owning your copy of the game and playing it as long as Nintendo WILL LET YOU to and no longer. You sign all your rights and soul away with the EULA.
