Nintendo Gaming / RE:They should make a Zelda RPG.
« on: September 30, 2004, 01:51:45 PM »
actually, RABicle's idea doesn't sound half-bad.  would i get it? probably not, but that's just because i'm not a fan of RPGs.  however i just might rent it and spend a day or two with it enjoying rolling around as a goron.  the game potentially could have plenty of content and it would be a huge hit comercially.  though i'm sure some fanboys would still cry, 'blasphemy!' about it.  it might be difficult to accept a game stituated in the zelda universe not being a zelda game.  this isn't like the mario universe, where supporting characters spin off into their own series' and then return for a cameo. u can't really have a game in hyrule without link, because that is his world.

General Gaming / RE:share thoughts on these N64 games

Oh, so many years ago, I was introduced to the goodness that is starcraft.  At the time, I had neither a computer or interent connection that was good enought to justify buying Starcraft for my PC.  Instead I hit every Gamestop in my area for the n64 port.  I walked in one day and asked for Satrcraft:  "sure hang on a second..."..."for n64'....".....good luck finding that, man"   It was a very long time before I finally found it, and lemme tell ya, I paid out a lot more than I should have.  I played it continuously for months.  However, now that I have my own PC, and I am away at a university where we have a glorious ethernet connection, I play PC Starcraft obviously.  And that is my old n64 game story.

...and then i found 20 bucks....

Didn't we have this Zelda realism debate when Wind Waker was in production?  Aren't all of you Wind Waker haters satisfied with the new Zelda? I am, and I even liked the cel-shading.  Now that we are getting the realistic-graphics Zelda that everyone craved, do we have to argue about this now?  Some people are never satisfied...  Now, I'm all for innovation and updating the series, but honestly tell me, how much better would the franchise be if you added blood into a series that has been excellent without it sp far?  Was WW really so bad in that Ganondorf's skull didn't explode when you impaled it?  I'd much rather see Ninty spend their time working on snowfall and other seasonal graphics, not how the blood should spray out of enemies.
As for the RPG thought, it's just wishful thinking, for those of you who actually think that that would be a good idea.  But Myamoto wants to keep Zelda fresh, not give it an extreme makeover.  Turning one of the most successful action-adventure games into an RPG would alienate even more fans than adding blood I would think.  I say that because most of the hardcore gamers that grew up with Zelda are just that now, grown up.  If a little gore bugs you, come on guys.  You like it in GTA and Manhunt.  I don't want the blood and guts either, but I think I could live with it, just as I came to like cel-shading.  The graphical presentation isn't what makes the game, its just a new medium.

Nintendo Gaming / NES classics
« on: April 17, 2004, 03:31:12 PM »
Gamespot lists several classic NES games being ported to the GBA.  I know gamespot isn't the most reliable of sources, but they've already got a release date announced (June 7 2004).  They list Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, Excitebike and Super Mario Bros.  Is this information correct?  Why is no one else talking about this then?

Ugh, I don't believe this.  I'm the guy who has cried out for a new GBA Zelda and now here it comes on the DS.  You know, I hadn't planned on buying the DS.  It looks like I might have to now, cuz there's no way I'm letting a new Zelda slip by me.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Favorite Game Discussions!
« on: April 12, 2004, 03:08:25 PM »
My favorite game on the GC has to be Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.  Wind Waker comes close and Beyond Good & Evil gets an honorable mention, but this game was sweet.  'Nuf said.  Yes it was a short game that gets shorter every times you play through it, but that is not relevant.  What does matter is excellent graphics, superb gameplay, and a deep story.  You can say all you want about how many of these concepts were not new, but I most certainly think that this game perfected them.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:When does it all come together?
« on: April 10, 2004, 02:42:53 PM »
That's something that has been bothering me as of late.  Since when can Ganondorf change back and forth into Ganon?  I was under the impression that when he let the Triforce of Power consume him in OoT, he was permanantly turned into Ganon.  Then all of a sudden, WW rolls around and we've got Ganondorf again.  In every other game he's been Ganon.  Then again I haven't played the two NES Zeldas, so you guys probably know something that I don't, so I'll shut up now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What really happened to Link?
« on: April 09, 2004, 01:47:09 PM »
Here's what I've come up with:
Once Ganondorf was defeated, the sages seal him away in the Sacred Realm, effectively erasing his existence.  I think that we can say there are two timelines now.  Adult Link is removed from his timeline now.  Young Link is now able to live the life he was supposed to live.  Now no threat exists, so he never leaves the Kokiri Forest to save the world.  However, he still has the memories of what happened (or what didn't happen?), so eventually, he leaves anyway and ends up in Termina.  But then, he still doesn't show up again after that.  Where did he go now?

Yes, Link did go to Termina, but he came back.  Or at least, he left Termina...  So if we know he didn't return to Hyrule, then where did he go?  Could this be where the Oracle games kick in?

Yeesh, I wan't trying to start another timeline debate here.  What I'm more concerned with is the connections, if any.  Like in the story at the begining of WW, they talk about how the Hero of Time left Hyrule and broke up the Triforce of Courage.  Where does that happen?  Is that when Link goes to Termina?  And, again, how about them Oracles?  The only thing that those seem to have in common with the rest are characters(Link, Zelda, Impa, Twinrova, Ganon, etc).  In LA, Link has gone off to strengthen himself against future threats.  Again, when is this?

Lately, I've been playing a lot of OoT.  It has brought up a burning question in my mind.  For years now, there have been questions about the Zelda timeline.  But when WW came out, it was finally said that each of the games featured a different Link.  If that's the case, we've got two big questions.  The first is still what the order of the timeline is.  The second, what is the real connection between all the games?  The Oracles, especially.  Hopefully, WW2 or maybe the next game will give more info on this, but in the meantime, what are some of the current theories?

I don't know about you guys but I find green lips very attractive...
I agree that the boxart doesn't do anything to really promote the game.  However, I would stop short of calling it crappy.  It looks more like the cover of a Tom Clancy children's book rather than an action/adventure game.
As for the game itself I just picked it up two days ago.  (I only had to dish out $4 when I traded in Jedi Outkast.)  I haven't stopped playing it yet.  I think Ubisoft is now my favorite 3rd party developer.  First PoP and now this.  The game has a very original story, which is a real plus in my book.  Plus, the rhinos in the Mammago Garage are without doubt the best new characters in a video game.  Graphics and audio are above par, and control is simple.  The game actually leans more towards adventure rather than action, which is new for me, but its not half-bad.

Yes we know this.  That's why I was saying that it is not of the Blizzard quality people probably expected.

Gamemaster, I know it would be impractical to have all of your titans in play at once, and to allow unlimited units and turrets.  Starcraft limited what you could build as well, but the limit was much higher.  During the single-player campaign, there was one part during the third (maybe fourth, I can't remeber) mission where my Hellfires had to penetrate through Plaguespitter territroy.  My forces were repeatedly defeated and pushed back because it was my one clan verses two Plaguespitter clans.  Was I dismayed at this disadvantage?  No.  Because I knew that I could simply pump out more units and send them to the battlefield as soon as the first ones died.  This might sound convienient, and really it is.  But it is devoid of challenge.  Oh, I long for the firefights between zerglings and marines...no matter who outnumbered who in those battles, you never knew who would emerge victorious...

I picked this game up eagerly because I've been drooling in anticipation for a console RTS since Starcraft 64.  After I got it I went back to Starcraft.  Don't get me wrong, this is the best console-designed RTS out there.   My main beef with the game is that in dumbing it down for RTS newbies, they made it too...limited.  True, there are five different clans to choose from, each with their own unique abilities, but you can only use three clans at a given time.  Plus, you are only allowed to have ten units per clan, and one titan.  Not one titan per clan, one titan at any given time.  In Starcraft, you had to build a buttload of buildings to get all of the available units and upgrades.  In Goblin, you have a clanhouse for each clan and one hall of titans for all your clans.  The clanhouse houses all your units and upgrades and the hall has each titan and defense turret for each clan.  And why are you allowed to build only three turrets?  That doesn't make sense at all.  Somewhere during the process of simplifying this game for consoles, they made it too easy for people who have played other RTS's before.  There isn't much strategy to it at all.  The only real choices you have to make are: "Will I send more ranged or melee units?" "If I bother to build turrets, where will I put them?" and "Should I use a Titan? If so, which one?"
The game is well-done though.  The graphics are good, and the difficulty progresses nicely along with the story.  The thing is, if you were expecting an RTS of Blizzard quality, you're not going to get it here.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda: Wind Waker was it a let down?
« on: February 01, 2004, 01:04:35 PM »
OoT and LA are without doubt my favorite games in the series.  They both had length and difficulty.  They both had fairly large overworlds that unfolded at a good rate.  WW was a great game too.  But now that I am on my second time through it, I question it.  Really, I could have played the entire game and never explored a fourth of the map.  I wasn't driven to do so.  Even though the map was huge, it unfolded slowly and most of it was water...useless water.  You would have thought that since this game is located on an ocean it would have had more water-based mini games.  But most of the islands were no bigger than the island cabana.  You call that a sprawling overworld?  I sure don't.  Smashman, whoever you quoted had the right idea.  We won't see that in WW2, but perhaps the N5 Zelda will support that.  That would be the gaming event of a lifetime.  Now don't go labelling me a WW hater.  It was still a great game, but the only reason I'm playing through a second time is for the Nintendo gallery.  Plus I'm still gonna buy every single Zelda game in the future.  (Except Four Swords and Tetra's Trackers..I'm not touching those.)

I know what you mean about the GBA player.  It IS freakin' awesome.  I don't have a GBA so this is the only way I can play my games.  (I still only have 3, but more are on the way.)  Once you use the Player, you can't go back to the GBA.  I can't picture Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on such a small screen!  And Zelda: Link to the Past with the Player feels almost like on the SNES.  Don't even get me started on how sweet Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is on the big screen.  And...and...now I've gone through my entire GBA library...but I'll be back with more!..someday..

Old or not, this news is kinda cool .  I hadn't noticed that, and now I'm gonna hafta look back at those and see for myself.  Plus I wouldn't be surprised if in some future game Ninty makes up some meaning behind the symbols.

What kind of glitches did you have?  I  had heard that some people experienced them, but I only had one.  In the tower as you're riding the elevator up to the top, you know how you had to fight that unbelieveably long wave of enemies?  If I died at that part (and was unable to rewind far enough) the game's loading screen would come up as normal, but sometimes the level wouldn't reload.  The reset button wouldn't work at that point too.  That happened maybe three times.

Wow..Now I feel like I'm the only guy who likes this game...
I thought that this was one of the best games I've played since WW.  Granted, the combat was simple, but I didn't mind that at all.  That was balanced with the fact that you had to find about 20 enemies in every encounter.  I loved the puzzles in the game, and that's what attracts me to games like this.  Anybody can make a good combat system, but good puzzles are something entirely different.  As for the graphics, I thought the in-game cutscenes were good enough, but the CG cutscenes were absolutely gorgeous.
SPOILERS
I don't really know what you mean when you talk about bosses.  There was the Vizier at the end, and yes he was disappointingly easy.  It just took a while to finish him off.  The only other thing I would consider calling  boss though would be your father.  Other than those two, I didn't see any bosses.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Darker Zelda
« on: January 12, 2004, 12:00:08 PM »
When comparing OoT + MM and WW, the most obvious thing to consider is that the N64 is completely outdated next to the GC.  OoT and MM took a graphical look that was supposed to be cutting edge for the current market.  (Looking back at those games, my eyes hurt.  Ugh, what texturing...) WW focused on something else.  While the graphics for WW are gorgeous, they aren't cutting edge.  The guys at Ninty instead focused on "little" things.  Facial expressions, grass blowing in the wind, realistic physics, etc.  If you say that current consoles can't handle both 'little things' and cutting edge graphics, do you suppose the N5 will?  That is the kind of Zelda that I want to see.  OoT was a dark game, in the sense that it was sinister, not violent.  God forbid that Link should ever get an uzi and hold up the local bomb shop, but I would like to see another game that featured a 'darker' story.  I don't care what you guys say, but WW did not create feelings of impending doom.  The only other person in the game who seemed to be aware of the danger, was the King of Red Lions.  It was a happy game despite the approaching danger, which gave it a kiddy feel.  Didn't that bug anybody else?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Question about MM
« on: January 10, 2004, 01:14:54 PM »
Hmmm  I haven't played either game in a really long time, but i don't think that it's absolutely neccessary to play OoT before MM.  You will find multiple references to OoT in MM, but you just won't catch them if you haven't played it all the way through yet.  But then, you're in the shadow temple so you're almost done with OoT.  Come to think of it, though, the begining of MM refers directly to the end of OoT.  Just for the sake of things, I think it would be best to finish OoT before you jump into MM.
