007: First Light will return on Switch 2, but not this year as initially planned.

The Switch 2 version of the spy shooter from IO Interactive has been delayed from a planned 2026 launch to March 2027, according to a IOI social media post. The game launched on other platforms on May 26.

The Switch 2 version was already delayed from this launch, and appeared in the sizzle reel near the end of last week's general Nintendo Direct with just a "2026" date. The delay is to allow additional time to polish the performance of the Switch 2 version.

Since the News Editor doesn't get to take "advantage" of the Customer Appreciation sale, he's going to get his share of tariff refunds when he invoices Nintendo for the time preparing this week's list.

At the start of 2026 I mentioned that I was considering invoicing Nintendo US$10,000 for wasted time entering the weekly releases (my time is valuable, especially since most of it is on weekends). But in a week where the Switch 2 is opening with its biggest week since opening day even without counting the Runescape game AND all three territories are on pace to sail over 3,000 original Switch games in the full year following Switch 2's launch, there's about to be another comma on that invoice and a couple more 0s to go with it.

The coattails are provided, of course, by Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, which lands a little over a year to the day from its unveiling and promises to keep us all busy for several hundred hours. But it's a big week for RPGs of the eastern persuasion in addition to Fire Emblem with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter and Another Eden Begins coming to both Switch 2 and Switch, plus an RPG-adjacent fighting game with Granblue Fantasy Versus. Direct appearers Fading Echo and Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight are also coming, alongside part of Microsoft's attempt to head off the 1600 layoffs they're still plotting for the end of this year in the games division with the Switch 2 launch of Diablo IV. Among other reasons to boycott.

Other announcements from today's Nintendo Direct:

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will finally hit Switch 2 on September 18, about four months after it launched on other platforms.
A trailer for The Witcher 3 Remastered (Sept 29) went over specific Switch 2 features including gyro and mouse controls, and also reconfirmed the Songs of the Past final DLC would be available next year.
Action adventure / horror game Hell Is Us confirmed an October 8 Switch 2 release.
Ubisoft will publish a Switch 2 version of The Crew: Motorfest on October 8.
Rebuilding simulator (ripped off about 5000 times on the eShop) House Flipper 2 has scheduled a move-in date of October 15 for Switch 2.
The original co-op adventure It Takes Two will receive a Switch 2 version on October 15 and owners of the Switch version will be able to upgrade for free in most territories.
Free-to-start (developed by Gameloft) game Bluey's Happy Snaps based on the animated series will snap a Switch 2 and Switch release on October 15 as well.
The Saudi Arabia-owned SNK made a pair of announcements, with Cristiano Ronaldo's Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves releasing October 22 (physical in January) and a collection of Metal Slug games programmed by M2 will be out next year which includes a location test version of the original and Metal Slug Advance.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will make its Nintendo direct download debut in an Encore Edition on November 5 for Switch 2: it was previously a cloud release for Switch.
Stellar Blade Complete will release on November 5, and will be accompanied by a Bayonetta-themed outfit for maximum squick.
It's Sonic's 30th anniversary, and his crossover with Pico Park is coming on November 12 (Switch 2 + Switch).
The next expansion for Disney Dreamlight Valley called "The Keepsake Sea" will be out in November, and focuses on aquatic characters like Capt. Jack Sparrow and The Little Mermaid.
Hela: Of Mice And Magic is an open-world adventure starring a mouse which will burrow into the Switch 2 (including physically) on December 1.
Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream will follow on December 3 for Switch 2: it is an adventure set in an early 1900s Nordic city and has touch screen and mouse control options.
They're giving Luke a gun in Professor Layton and the New World of Steam which will make 2026 barely (December 10): the next entry in the Yo-Kai Watch series is a remake of the Yo-Kai Watch 2 games called Haunted Domain and is confirmed to be in development but has no release window.
Free-to-play life sim Palia will have a Switch 2 Edition launch in December.
Shooter RPG The Ascent will also come to the Switch 2 in December with mouse control support and all prior DLC included (as an Ultimate Edition).
The partner rapid fire reel opened with the Switch 2 edition of 007: First Light which still has no date beyond 2026.
For unavoidable reasons, Danganronpa 2x2 (recently moved to a Game Key Card for its physical release) will hold its first class trials January 14.
An extended gameplay trailer for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 12) was shown during the Direct.
It's not card games on motorcycles (yet), but a remake of Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force (2006, PSP) will deal a Switch 2 and Switch release February 16. The game's eShop listing is live for preorders, and has a three line disclosure of generative AI used for some of the language translations (which ones are not specified).
Also due on February 16 is Romancing Saga 3: Destinies United for Switch 2 / Switch as recently spotted by the Brazilian ratings authority.
Eternal Anima is a new Marvelous-published RPG that will bring time travel and a timing-based combat system a la Grandia to Switch 2 on March 4.
Far Cry 3 and its highly 80s-tinged spinoff Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will come to Switch 2 next spring.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II will come to Switch with a Royal Edition next year including all of the previous DLC.
Ondeh Ondeh: Kaya's Tasty Tale is a music-focused action game that Bandai Namco will publish next year.
A rare handheld only Switch 2 game called Onyx: The Dark Grip from Bloober Team is due next year: the game makes heavy use of the touchscreen for puzzle solving.
Stage Fright is a new 3 player co-op action game scheduled for 2027: it is developed by Ghost Town Games (Overcooked) and published by Hello Games (No Man's Sky)'s publishing label.
Koei Tecmo and developer Gust will bring licensed mystery solving game The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother to Switch 2 and Switch next year.

In addition to Monster Hunter, Capcom showed new details on an upcoming anniversary and is bringing a trio of modern remakes to Switch 2.

Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, which all received modern RE Engine remakes over the last several years, will all come to Switch 2 on February 16. RE2 will be its Deluxe Edition and RE4 a "Gold Edition", both of which include all previously released DLC.

A quick trailer was also shown for Mega Man: Dual Overdrive which confirmed Proto Man will be playable, and the game celebrating the 40th anniversary of Mega Man will be available in spring of 2027. Alongside the Switch 2 and Switch releases will be Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo.

Crisis Core and the Mario Kart World update aren't the only shadowdrops today.

Perhaps the biggest one is the first console release for smash hit PC game Meccha Chameleon. It is a multiplayer hide-and-seek game in which the hiders can cover themselves in spray paint in order to help stay away from the seekers.

A remake of the original Mystery Dungeon game, Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, is also available today: the titular Torneko is the shopkeeper character from Dragon Quest IV. The remake, in addition to support for languages beyond Japanese, also adds difficulty settings and is available on both Switch 2 and Switch.

New demos are out for action RPG Fading Echo (September 17), Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World (Dec 3), and PS5/PC climbing game Cairn's debut on Switch 2 ("early 2027").

Two of the best selling Switch 2 games received new information today.

Mario Kart World's version 1.8 update is out now, and in addition to adding two more Knockout Tours a "Vs Race" option is available with ten courses based on courses from the original Super Mario Kart. The courses even use ? blocks that must be driven across on the ground in order to get items alongside the retro track designs.

The final rider/vehicle Kirby Air Riders amiibo were also revealed as Sword Kirby+Dragoon and Noir Dedede+Hydra, bringing the final count for the line to seven. The new amiibo will be available in 2027: before that, an event that "refreshes the menus" will be released.

Details continue to pour in for Nintendo's last Switch 2 release of the year, the Switch 2 Edition for Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

A new mode called "Heroes' Vault" was shown which sees the party attempt to defeat enemies and build a meter which can be expended for new skills or allies. The building is necessary in order to defeat bosses at the end of the road.

Additionally, a new hero named Shimmer will be available in the Switch 2 edition: she is an Attacker class hero with the Foresight ability.

If it's a pre-Tokyo Game Show Direct and there's a Monster Hunter to talk about, it's going to lead off a Direct.

After announcing the release of the 2025 hunting action RPG in June, Monster Hunter Wilds's Switch 2 version had its first footage today - alongside a release date of December 4. All of the updates made after the game's initial release on PC/PS/Xbox will be included, as well as a four player local multiplayer option.

The announcement also confirmed the "Ascendance" expansion will come to Switch 2 in 2027, which is the current date for all platforms: it isn't clear if the expansion will launch day and date on Switch 2 or if there will be a delay due to the delayed release of the base game.

Final Fantasy VII: Revelation may be coming to Switch 2 in April, but there's another game they want you to play in the leadup.

A Switch 2 version of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion was revealed at the end of a recap trailer for Revelation, and will be out today. The remake of the PSP game originally launched on Switch in December of 2022, but the Switch 2 version will offer a higher framerate and resolution.

The availability of save transfer or an upgrade discount is unknown as of press time, but as Square Enix is publishing the game it is not expected.

In a segment blissfully shorter than its unveiling, some new features were shown for Switch Sports Resort in today's Direct.

A free roaming mode was shown which allows for full exploration of Wuhu Island and the surrounding oceans, complete with the ability to find photos or other items that lead to new lookout points. A single player "Island Crown" mode was also shown, which has the player attempt to move up the ranks in a specific sport with "Island Legends" awaiting at the highest levels.

2023 Game of the Year Pikmin 4 is getting some more love in November.

A Switch 2 edition of the strategy success will release on November 12 under the name "Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy". The centerpiece of the update will be the Dandori Academy, a version of the Dandori mode in which players will have to complete maps as quickly as possible every weekend. There will be a total of 72 maps released over an undetermined period.

The Switch 2 version will also allow for the use of the Switch 2's microphone to give orders to Oatchi (as well as calling them a good dog).

Once again, the Switch announcement of a group of Persona games was delayed but we're getting all of it.

The semi-main event for the Nintendo Direct was a twin reveal of the upcoming Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 getting Switch 2 releases. Revival, a full HD upgrade of 2012's Persona 4 Golden with new voice acting, will release on May 20 (compared to February 16 for other consoles).

The forthcoming Persona 6, announced at a Microsoft presentation in June, will also release on Switch 2 but no window was given nor is there any word on a delay for the Switch 2 version. Notably, the game's Steam achievements were inadvertently released last night due to a Steam API error.

The last game of the Calamitous 4 Zelda games is also getting a Switch 2 release.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will receive a Definitive Edition on February 25, with preorders opening today. Players will be able to use their existing saves and a ~~to-be-determined discount~~ will be provided for owners of the 2020 Switch release.

The Switch version will include all of the content in the game's 2021 Expansion Pass, as well as enhanced framerate and resolution.

EDIT 6:55pm EDT: The game's eShop page is reflecting a 50% discount for owners of Age of Calamity on Switch (US$59.99 MSRP down to $29.99), which makes it the most expensive Switch 2 upgrade Nintendo has ever offered - possibly due to the Japanese version being published by Koei Tecmo, who traditionally do not offer upgrades for cross-gen releases at all.

Kirby's 35th anniversary next year is going even further beyond than you might've thought.

The final announcement of today's Direct was the reveal of Kirby and the World Beyond, a full 3D action\adventure game due for launch in spring 2027. The trailer showed the traditional Kirby copy abilities getting massive power ups: at one point, Sword Kirby cut down an entire wall.

The game will be a part of the 35th anniversary of Kirby (originally released in 1992), with more celebration details forthcoming.

The Zelda 40th anniversary had one job, and delivered in spades.

A supermajority of the presentation was devoted to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, which confirmed a November 5 release. There are some new designs for the dungeons, the day/night cycle will continue to pass even when in towns, and players will have free camera control and a jump button (instead of autojump). Also added for Switch 2 was an option for humming ocarina tunes into the microphone.

Ocarina will also support the Zelda Notes app used for Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2, and amiibo of young Link and Zelda will be available sometime in 2027.

A special Switch 2 with Zelda branding (including green Joy-Cons) will be available on October 29, and the first run of physical editions (while supplies last) will have "textured foil" cover art.

The show also confirmed the name of the April 30 film will just be "The Legend of Zelda", but did not show a trailer in lieu of the title card.

Based on word from Australia, don't expect a deal on pricing for Ocarina of Time after tomorrow's Zelda Direct.

As first spotted by Australian Nintendo specialists Vooks, the recently announced Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is showing a digital price of AU$94.95. This is the same price the local Nintendo store charges for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which is available digitally in North America for US$59.99/C$84.99 and in Europe for €59.99/£49.99.

The price does not come up on other eShops nor by doing a comparable search on the web stores for "Zelda", just on the generic search in Australia specifically. The full price is expected to be known worldwide following tomorrow's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct.

Yes, it's obvious that everything on the docket this week is probably going to get overshadowed by the big doubleheader next week and whatever Festivus throws at it two mornings from press time. But stuff is still coming out - too much, in the case of the Switch - and some of it's important. For instance, the first of Too Much Trails in the From Zero / To Azure doubleheader drops on Switch 2 this week, which surely does no favours for next week's Trails in the Sky 2nd which already has to go up against Fortune's Weave, the poor bastard. (Reviews: Allyson on From Zero, Jordan on To Azure.) Also coming to Switch 2 this week already is Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush (the open world one), and the full release of PC viral hit Valheim.

For Switch, it's Too Much Culdcept with a re-release of the Saturn game: given how long it was between Revolt on 3DS and Culdcept Begins this summer, two months seems like a quick turnaround.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Somehow, the original Switch dropped 30 games after last week: the News Editor was trying to fight off the flu and this didn't help! Both platforms got the Arcade Archives release Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh, though. (As opposed to Revenge of *ANNOYED GRUNT*, which you might have heard eminating from the home office in Hadabesack, Nova Scotia.)

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: There's no text on the gameplay screen but any explanations probably aren't translated, so pull up a YouTube playthrough for Sabnack.

Ahead of Tokyo Game Show starting on September 17, Sony was the first platform holder to hold a presentation for new game announcements and some release dates.

The headline announcement was the release date for Final Fantasy VII: Revelation being confirmed for April 8, roughly seven years after the first part of the overstuffed remake debuted on PlayStation 4. Further announcements have confirmed an expansion pass with two side stories focused on Vincent and Sephiroth would release in the year following the base game. The Switch 2 retail version will be a Game Key Card, but this is likely due to the game's file size weighing in at ~~TILT~~ 130GB.

Other announcements:

A demo for Final Fantasy Resonance is now available with save carryover.
Cygames introduced a new publishing label called Cygames Edge and their first game will be a "leap of faith" action game called Where The Seeds Fall which will launch on November 5.
Square Enix is splitting the Final Fantasies with some Dragon Quest as Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World confirmed a December 3 launch.
Unlimited blades will work in Fate/Extra Record, a remake of the tournament focused RPG in the traditional visual novel series which will hit Switch 2 and Switch January 28 from XSEED.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger will get a story expansion "A Hero's Eternal Legacy" in 2027.
The sequel to shark RPG Maneater (Maneater 2) will lurk on Switch 2 in 2027.
Anime continues happening as NIS America will handle western publishing duties for "The Eminence In Shadow: Phantom Echoes", an action roguelite based on a light novel and anime, next year.
Annapurna will publish a new game from Maquette studio Graceful Decay called "Uncanyon" in 2027.

A trio of NES games have dropped into the Nintendo Classics library for Switch Online subscribers tonight, with a new developer added to the fold.

Ikari Warriors (1987) is an early SNK release for the NES and is a 2-player co-op overhead shooter based on SNK's "Ikari" arcade game. The arcade version is available in the Arcade Archives on both Switch and Switch 2 via backwards compatibility, but this is the first time the home version has been re-released.
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (1991) is the final game in the 8 bit hack-and-slash platformer trilogy from Tecmo, with development led by future RPG stalwart Masato Kato. It was previously re-released on Wii and 3DS Virtual Console, as well as a release in the Console Archives line for Switch 2 in late April.
RC Pro-Am II (1992) is a four player-compatible racing game developed by Rare (with a David Wise soundtrack) that expanded the gameplay of the 1988 original and 1991 Game Boy game.

When you sell 72 million copies, you're going to get support well beyond the normal time, and so it goes with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The Switch sales behemoth has received a version 4.0 update tonight, which is focused on performance for Switch 2 specifically with faster load times and the option for 8 player split-screen as well as camera support if in a GameChat session. At least one Switch 2 controller (Joy Con or Pro Controller) must be connected for 8 player local play, but the numbers can be made up with Switch Joy-Cons.

For those who haven't upgraded yet, the patch also provides a speed increase - the patch notes give an estimate of one coin equivalent - and owners of the Booster Course Pass can now select a "96 Race" vs option.

Between late releases last week and this week's starting bid, I believe I loaded 110+ profiles in a little over 24 hours, and I find myself hoping the Switch's discontinuation in Europe (due to a lack of removable batteries in the Switch) next year will result in the supply of games getting cut down dramatically. Sadly, 156m copies can't be wrong. So what's on the successor? Well, the big one is either Onimusha: Way of the Sword as Capcom continues their generational run, or the Dirty Pair-styled co-op adventure Orbitals. (Willem reviewed Onimusha in case you missed it.) Also dropping are the annual fee-to-pay NBA 2k27, shop builder Moonlighter II (Jordan's review), and a Switch 2 release for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty from Koei Tecmo.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: 37 channels and one thing on with the Console Archives release of "8-bit console" Bubble Bobble, though you may want to consider Blood Dungeon for either Switch 2 or Switch.

It's Gamescom week in Europe, and the Geoff Keighley-hosted Opening Night Live did have a decent Switch 2 / Switch presence in it.

The headlining announcement was a Switch 2 release of the forthcoming remastered version of The Witcher 3. Originally released on Switch in 2019, the Switch 2 upgrade will be available on September 29, and owners of the Switch version will be able to upgrade at no cost: if the game was purchased without the Hearts of Stone / Blood and Wine expansions following their separation, they are also included in the Switch 2 version by default. The Switch 2 version is also expected to receive the new "Songs of the Past" expansion next year.

Other announcements:

A demo is now available for next week's Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Switch 2): the demo was previously released on Steam and PlayStation.
RedOctane is getting back into the plastic instrument game with Stage Tour, which will be released for Switch 2 on December 10: guitars, microphones, and drums will be available from the manufacturer's website though the Switch 2 drums will not be available at launch.
Pixel art platformer Mariachi Legends, which was previously targeting a 2026 launch, confirmed a release date of April 27 of next year.
Saber Interactive's Turok reboot Turok: Origins was also delayed to spring 2027 following its announcement for fall release in the June Nintendo Direct: no word on if this delay is to add more LLM-generated content.
Capcom showed a new trailer for Mega Man: Dual Override, which confirmed Proto Man will appear in the 40th anniversary game when it launches next year. A coinciding announcement will see a Mega Man costume added to Pragmata.
A new trailer was shown for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII: Revelation which confirmed the return of the Weapons (bosses that scale up to superbosses), and some new summons that were not in the original 1997 game including Typhon (FFVI).
Worms: Galactic Tactics, the next game in the long running strategy series, was revealed for a 2027 launch: a second new Worms was also announced but gave no platforms or windows.
The Arcade Crew (Blazing Chrome) will publish Arconia: Mirror Worlds, a self-described "action adventure shop manager" next year.
Also due in 2027 is co-op adventure Age Twisters from publisher Krafton and developer Piccolo Studio.
The debut game from MCB Studio, a supergroup of developers from studios including Bungie, Hi-Rez Studios, and BioWare, will be fantasy co-op game 1001 Threads of Mizan for Switch 2 among other systems. No release date was given.
Lego is moving to build entire cities with Lego Skylines, which will launch on Switch 2 at an undetermined time.

Alongside a reminder of the Switch 2's price increase next week came a pair of bundle offers for the North American markets.

Nintendo of America has announced two Switch 2 and game bundles to come following the Sept 1 raise of the Switch 2's base retail price to US$499.99. The first will be the return of the Mario Kart World bundle (including three months of individual Nintendo Switch Online membership) in "late September", possibly tied to the Sept 17 launch of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, at a MSRP of $549.99 (also up $50). This will likely replace the current "pick a game" bundle.

The other bundle will come on October 22 and will include Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and the three month NSO at a MSRP of $529.99. As with Mario Kart, the copy of Switch Sports Resort will be a digital code included in the box.

One of the few pre-Wii games that has a Japan and European release but never came out in North America appears to be headed to Switch 2 and Switch next year - worldwide.

Clear River Games (one of the many subsidiaries of Embracer) has announced a "Rebirth" of the 1995/96 Super Nintendo action RPG Terranigma will release in 2027. The reveal trailer is embedded below:

Terranigma was the final Super Nintendo game released by the developer Quintet, and was the third game in a loose trilogy which also included Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia. The game was localized and released in Europe on 19 December 1996, but its North American release plans were scuttled with the closure of the American operations of Enix Corp: Nintendo, who had published Illusion of Gaia in 1994, elected not to release Terranigma due to that fall marking the launch of the Nintendo 64 in North America.

The story of the game features a young man named Ark who lives on a dark side of Earth and after opening a mysterious door, has to return to the "lightside" to resurrect the doomed planet in order to save his home.

To once again borrow the quote from 1996 Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle: "Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of the Dark Souls. And if I could make any developer in the industry tap out, it'd be Miyazaki." Yes, I have to be reminded that the game that led to a six month later death of scores of video game websites because their traffic dropped six months later and line must go up is coming to Switch 2, as much as I hoped it would get the Borderlands 4 treatment after Gamescom last year. It's not the only game that sucked up The Discourse coming to Switch 2 this week, though Metal Gear Solid 4 is a) also coming to Switch and b) coming with the best MGS, Peace Walker (the original Monster Hunter with guns which would get its torch picked up by 2016 Game of the Year Metroid Prime: Federation Force).

Other items of note: NISA-published strategy RPG Brigandine Abyss, the just-in-time-for-the-EPL-kickoff soccer RPG Captain Tsubasa 2 on Switch, compilation adventure game The Immortal John Triptych, Indie World veteran Lou's Lagoon, and a Toaplan Garage game that sounds like a really messed up Sharpedo Terastalization.
