Welcome Home USS Abraham Lincoln!
« on: May 02, 2003, 07:07:50 AM »
As I type this, the USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to port, after being deployed for the longest stretch of any naval ship in recent memory.  Regardless of your personal feelings about the war, it's always heartwarming to see the brave men and women who risk their lives for our country's ideals return home safe and sound.

My room-mate was laughing her ass off when she heard about the soldier who threw a hand grenade into the command tent.  I gave her the worst tongue lashing she ever got.

It's great to see that the American soldiers are being welcomed home so warmly though.  (Not like after Vietnam)

As am I., my dad was stationed in Europe, his duty wasn't dangerous, but having someone gone for a few months is never very much fun.  Luckily, since all this is cooling down, he will be returning home much sooner than he was originally going to.  I can't wait.

Legal semantics aside, I too was heartwarmed to see the reaction of the Lincoln's sailors to our Commander in Chief's speech.

Looking into the faces of those young sailors should remind all of us of the gravity of these events and that every moment of every day, there are hundreds of people just like them that are standing watch and protecting our rights so that we can sleep in peace. I know that sounds cliched, but maybe being in the military myself just gives me a different perspective on the whole issue.

The carrier is now pulling into Naval Station Everett in Washington State.  A truly amazing sight ... as the carrier is docking, two bald eagles flew overhead.  That's a visual I'm not going to forget any time soon.
