Hunter Controls
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:28:01 AM »
I just picked up Metroid Prime Hunters.  I played around the game and have been really enjoying the experience.  WIFI is surprisingly smooth and only once did I have any issues with smooth gameplay.

The question I have is what controls are everyone using.  Because I am trying to find the best, and I am having a difficult time jumping, switch forms and weapons.

Right now I am using the thumbstrap, sensitivity level 8 or 9.  And regular default controls.

I find it easier to change forms and such with the stylus, but then I can't fire or anything.

What are your settings and what are your thoughts on the controls?

i've been playing with the stylus, seems to work best for me so far. i want a bigger stylus though.

what i'd really like is a thing that sits over the four buttons (and the dpad) that makes it work like an analoge stick (yes i know it wouldn't work that way exactly, but it would be easier than using the buttons) so that I could do the two hands and the trigger buttons.

though, part of me thinks that the stylus is still the way to go.

Thumbstrap, in lefthanded mode.  It works really well in-game, but switching to missiles, hitting "OK" and turning on the visor is a real pain (I have to use my right thumb to do that).

I really wish they'd mapped the visor switching to the select key....

I've been doing really well with the default stylus set up, but I lowered the sensitivity to about 5 which I find helped improve my accuracy.  No thumb strap here.  I can't stand that thing.

When I was at NOA, Tycho was surprised to find he was most comfortable with the Dual Mode.

Also I discovered that for some reason, inverting the controls in Hunters completely screws me up, even though I always use inverted controls when playing with analog sticks.

It really does look like it will be different for each of us.

I just spent some time using the stylus in the default mode.  I may try to slow down the sensitivity and see how I do.  With the Thumbstrap I think you need to speed it up, but perhaps with the stylus you need to slow it down.

I wish you could map the buttons.  I would make choosing missles the L button, A and B both switch to alternative forms and XY to be used for changing weapons.  Select would be good for the scan visor.

Still the game works much better than I ever imagined a FPS to perform on the DS.

I'm just going with the defaults for now.  I still haven't played enough to form an opinion, but using the stylus seems to work fine as long as I'm sitting comfortably.  I'm starting to wish I had a DS Lite right about now though...

Stylus controls all the way. I thought I'd be more of a Dual Mode guy, but surprise surprise, stylus controls are oddly intuitive - moreso than I thought.

Well that's easy... do you normally play with an inverted mouse?  I do the same thing, inverted control for sticks, normal for mouse.

Analog Sticks are akin to flight sticks... and you tell the game which direction and how rapidly you'd like to move the center point.  A lot of people are used to inverted controls here, myself included.  I don't know the rationale, maybe it's the fault of the flight sims.  However, the touch Pad is similar to the mouse, where there's a 1:1 (or really 1:<sensitivity>) ratio of where you want the center point to be.  Most people don't invert mouse controls (for general use, FPS, etc).

I am finding the more I play the more comfortable the controls are.

It is still a pain to find the sweet spot to hit the scan visor with the thumb strap, or to switch weapons, but that will just take time.

This game above all others has cemented my investment in a DS Lite though.  The DS has been my favorite system since the Nintendo 64 came out.  It is a perfect blend of amazing 2D games and solid 3D game experience.

I think people will have less problems when the DS Lite comes out.  Hopefully soon.

The touchscreen is sweet for fps.  IT's just a bit awkward to hold the DS with the left hand while also using the left thumb to control the d-pad and the index finger to press the left trigger.   This forces me to balance the DS on a table or on my lap and crouch over enough so that a career in the circus is now a possibility.

The DS lite would help because it would be easier to hold and the brightness levels would let you back your eyeballs off the DS screen a bit.  Hence no crouching.  Also it would probably be easier for thumbstrap use as well because the shorter width would give your thumb more access to the touchscreen.

It's the fault of Zelda...

Lord. ok. I need another 50 bucks to throw down on this game. I just bought Minish Cap and Omega Factor and now Hunters is out and I need to find cash for NSMB. This isn't fair. So much for getting a DSL to replace my Mariokart DS. :/

Glad to hear this game turned out so well.

It's not out here but from my experiments with Quake (PocketPC) I'd say dpad+stylus works well for me.

ViewtifulGamer's assessment is exactly how I feel.

I got so frustrated playing the "First Hunt" demo, that I completely gave up on the game. The stylus control felt awkward and the the "Dual Mode" felt too restrained. Knowing that this would be a must-own title, I just had to buy it (LOL) on Tuesday. I held off on playing it until I could finish Phoenix Wright (which I did, last night). I played Metroid this morning on my way into work. It took me about 5 minutes to get used to the stylus control set-up. For me, it's the only way to go. I didn't even bother to try the other control option because I hated it on the demo.
