DS Cover Art
« on: October 04, 2005, 08:59:11 AM »
Has anyone noticed the recent trend of putting outstretched arms/hands on the cover art for DS games?

Observe the following examples:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Trace Memory
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Is there a reason for this?  Are they trying to emphasize (possibly even subconsciously) the touch screen?  Is it all one big conspiracy?  Or am I just paranoid?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, it's not exactly an uncommon pose.

I like the M&L2 cover art.

Find me four GameCube (or GBA, N64, whatever) games that came out within a month of each other that all have that pose on them.

And funny you should mention M&L2.  The cover art for that game has an outstretched-arm.  (But not as prominent, so I didn't mention it in my original post.

I think that is some subtle touchscreen thing, which is pretty cool.  I hope not too many games have the same cover pose, though, because it'd probably get pretty old.  Nintendo and other companies have been very clever with the subliminal subtleties with the DS.
Also note, Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright even have a halo-like glow about their hands.
Nice observation, very interesting.

Touching is good...  But yeah, probably because of the emphasis on the touch screen...

The only reason is that it's a very common anime pose.  I mean if you've ever seen an episode of You-Gay-Ho (Yu-Gi-Oh blolz), it's more pointing than actual card playing.  No conspiracies here...

Oh yeah?  Then tell me why the Yu-Gi-Oh game is one of the few games to come out recently that doesn't have someone with an outstretched arm (facing the viewer) on the cover art.

Damn, didn't see her.  She doesn't count, because technically she's spreading both her arms to the side, but the way she's positioned makes it look like one's pointing towards you.

mmm- interesting. I'd say there's definitely a pattern and it's more than just a coincidence. Now, whether this happened because of a) unconscious choices made by the artists, b) a deliberate marketing scheme, or c) the fact that marketing people tend to copy each other (ever notice when a popular movie coins a tagline in its trailer like "nothing you've ever seen, nothing you've ever experienced, can prepare you for....", suddenly fifty movies start using it?).... I can't say.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon
