TalkBack / Re: The Final Quest for Mushrooms: The Mario RPG Retrospective
« on: February 16, 2011, 12:57:20 PM »
what a great feature!  i love this game.  i purchased my copy (which i still have in mint condition) from toys'r'us when they were getting rid of all of their snes games for like $5-$8.  i think i got mario rpg for $8.  anyways, i had never hear of it, but decided to grab it since it was "mario".  i was hooked!  it was my first rpg experience and i loved it.

Pedro - you briefly mentioned the online component of the game.  Did you go online with it?  How was the actual service?  Does it compare to something like Mario Kart Wii?  Was it easy to find people to play with?  Was there any lag?

so what's frustrating about this is... this game doesn't look interesting to me, since i already have wii sports and wii sports resort.  however, it has online play.  i mean, what i was most excited about with wii sports was the potential to play wii tennis with my brother across the country.  you can now do it with this game, but it will be the 3rd "sports mini-game collection" i'll have to buy.

i just wish they released this and resort as one game.  all the sports games, online play, motion plus, miis, and nintendo characters.  but whatever.

This wasn't mentioned in the review, so I'm assuming I already know the answer to this, but...

Do the choices you make affect the appearance of Mickey Mouse?  I remember watching an interview with Warren Spector and he said that the the Mickey Mouse character you're controlling would change in appearance (ranging from a menacing to a friendly version of Mickey Mouse) as you interact with the game.  I'm guessing that was bagged?

...and as Jonny mentioned - Super Mario World as well.  That would have been great.

But while we're dreaming - we're only talking about a collection of ROMs, so why not have all of these in the collection:

Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario World 2 : Yoshi's Island

Now THAT would have been something to get excited about.

Andy, I gotta say - when I heard you announce on Newscast that there is no option to turn on Tag Mode... my heart sank.  I was also used to playing it that way and found it completely annoying when I couldn't control both characters.  I may sound trite, but that missing option alone may deter me from picking this up, or at the very least deflate my excitement.  The same thing goes for the button mapping.  I used to use turbo with the same button you did as well.  Very weird decisions.  You'd think these things would be basic.

Maybe this is a good time to talk about any memories of getting the NES.  I remember being 8 years old in 1988.  My brothers and I wanted it so badly.  Of course, we asked for it for Christmas, but were told it was too expensive.  Christmas morning came and there was a box from our grandpa.  My dad told us it was a popcorn maker, and not to get too excited.  You could imagine our elation when we ripped the wrapping paper off and discovered it was an NES.  What a joyous morning.  Sadness only returned when we couldn't get through 1-1 because we didn't know how to B-dash.  My dad had to read the instruction manual.  Haha.

If you click on one of the images, you can see that it says "Wii Motion Plus" on it, but I can't make out what is stated above it.  It might say "compatible with", which would mean you'd still have to plug the stupid Wii Motion Plus cube into the bottom.

thanks for the review, pedro.  i was hoping this one would somehow surprise us.  i've been looking forward to it ever since it was announced, since there are no other LOTR games on Wii.  it's a shame about this game.  still, i'm sure i'll pick it up and some point just to play through it.

i thought they couldn't have any of the old levels, although they could have similar environments, since those environments were in the movie.

If you were to import this, would it play on a U.S. Wii?  Or would you need a Japanese Wii?
