Title: Metroid Dread?
Post by: IssunZX on June 04, 2009, 12:47:17 PM
I was browsing Nintendo Life and, according to an interview on Kotaku, another Metroid game besides Other M might be in the works.

It's not entirely confirmed, but the director said that it MAY one day be released. It seems they're focusing on Other M right now though.

I wonder would this be a hand held or what? a 2D console metroid?! I'd buy it.

IGN: [Laughing] We guess that answers it then. Okay, we have to ask about Metroid Dread. It popped up on an internal Nintendo release list awhile back and we haven't heard anything about it since.

Yoshio Sakamoto: This is quite awhile ago. A few E3s back. I can only say right now that this is Other M, it is not Metroid Dread. But as a concept the Metroid Dread idea does still exist within my mind so maybe sometime in the future I will be able to bring that to you.

IGN: Are you burned out on the prospect of doing another 2D Metroid, or does the possibility still excite you, maybe for WiiWare or DSiWare, if nothing else?

Yoshio Sakamoto: It's not as though my team or myself have grown tired of creating 2D games, but I think it's all what the concept is, what the game design is, and what best suits that whether it's on the Wii or DS. So moving forward, if an idea comes up that is best suited for DS then we'll pursue that.

Sounds pretty non-concrete to me. :/

Who would have thought this day would come? Might be one of the few games I plan to buy day one.

Did they really sit on that idea for 10 years?

15 years, actually! Source. (https://www.polygon.com/features/22537280/metroid-dread-interview-yoshio-sakamoto-nintendo-switch)

“15 years ago, I suppose that was around the time that the Nintendo DS was around. Just speaking in terms of the specs that I had in mind, it was a bit difficult to realize that concept with that hardware. And now, where we are today, the Nintendo Switch is our current system. The specs are what they are, and also the system for development that we have in place is also a bit better.”

dang, Nintendo, life's too short to leave ideas sitting around that long. Just get them out there and leave luck to heaven.

I guess this is DYKG's twitter but they've posted lots of rejected pitches from the last 20+ years: https://twitter.com/reggie_800 (https://twitter.com/reggie_800)

One of the rare cases where a fully built game is actually locked in a vault somewhere, Zero Racers was completed and rated by the ESRB, but cancelled shortly before launch bc Nintendo lost faith in the Virtual Boy.

Iwata asked his friend of 15 years, Yoot Saito, to bring his game Seaman to the 3DS. Yoot got working on it, but never finished. Feelings got a bit sore between the two men, and sadly, they never spoke again.

In 2004, Retro wanted to make a Zelda DS game that played a lot like Final Fantasy Tactics, but with a time travel mechanic that delivered a unique Zelda spin on the genre.

18 years ago, Retro Studios pitched a Zelda Tactics game for DS. Nintendo rejected the pitch, but I recently acquired the full 22 page pitch document and interviewed one of the designers. Here's the full story, full explained (20 minutes): http://youtube.com/watch?v=cIHtTl4U4yU

About 6 years ago, former Nintendo programmer and a small team made an F-Zero Switch prototype. Unfortunately, Nintendo didn't wanna fund it. He told us he could make a new F-Zero for less than $1 million.

More times FZ almost came back: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ocX0LkyXLx4

When development of Metroid Prime 3 began, Retro told Nintendo they wanted to make it a new style of game. An "open world" where Samus flew around the galaxy "chasing down baddies of various types." Nintendo said no =/

After finishing up Metroid Prime 3, one of the team members pitched a document for Metroid Tactics -- basically, XCOM but in the Metroid universe. Unfortunately, Retro leadership rejected it, so Nintendo never saw the idea. Full story: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ8xa4drduQ
