Nintendo Gaming / Paper Mario and the Origami King

Anyone playing through this?

I have never been so torn about a game before. The writing, the wit, the charm and those bananas unexpected moments are just amazing. I am all in with this. I can't wait to play through till completion seeing what other wonderful surprises lurk within. There have been some genuine laugh out loud moments for me.

Unfortunately, as much as I love all the above, the combat system juxtaposes it perfectly. I have never hated combat in a game as much as I do in this one. It's at the point now where I am running from encounters. Maybe I'm just ludicrously incompetent, but I have such a hard time with the line em up boards. When there are mobs all over the board my brain just melts out my ear, especially when it's a three turn board. I am now instantly paying the toads to line it up for me because I just can't be bothered dealing with it anymore, and because I'm getting more and more sick of it I'm performing worse at it because I just want it over. I think what really annoys me about it is that if you mess it up the game punishes you for it. Rather than doing something sensible like reducing your reward it reduces your damage. This damage reduction will quite likely render you unable to take out mobs in a single turn which snowballs into a hell of a lot potential incoming damage.

This system isn't clever, it isn't fun. It's just reprehensibly bad and drags everything out. I'd be more than happy for them to completely remove the combat "mini games" and just have it all on the overworld like the paper macho mobs.

This is so frustrating because I'd dearly love to play through this again one day but the terrible combat is quite likely enough to put me off.

What are your thoughts?

Let me preface this by saying that I did not create this thread to bash Nintendo.  I know I have been quite the pessimist over the last few months, but I created this thread in the hope of discussing the topic.

OK, Due to the way the Wii U has been handled, do we think that this will be Nintendo's last foray into the home console arena?  Now I realize that the Wii U is only 6 months old.  But still, those 6 months have been as bad as they could possibly be.

As far as I can tell, every single facet of the Wii U has been a disaster.
- The console is underpowered.
- The OS is slow and buggy.
- Frequent game crashing.
- Pretty much nothing standout in the way of games.
- Been shunned by 3rd parties.
- Hardly any information pre-launch. (Ordinary PR)
- Missing DLC
- Staple titles absent from the system.

And that is all in the first 6 months when it is still the newest (and presumably the most capable) system on the market.  What do you think will happen when the PS4 and Durango hit the market?

Thinking about this has led me to think that Nintendo will end their production of consoles and stick to handhelds.  In fact, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if Nintendo announce that the Wii U is done and they are proceeding only with handhelds.  Nintendo are good at handhelds.  It seems to be where their passion lies.

With the way things are going, do we even want Nintendo to continue producing consoles?  I know I personally feel betrayed by them.  Nintendo told us that the Wii U was their means of bringing back the core gamer.  Well right now the Wii U (and Nintendo) are the laughing stock of the gaming community.  They are the laughing stock of the very crowd they were trying to win back.

What do you all think? (again, bearing in mind we are only 6 months in.)
Do you think things will improve?
What do you think needs to happen for things to improve?
Do you even want Nintendo to continue console development if things continue the way they have been?

I can't wait for this.  Looking pretty spiffy.

Total Biscuit played a few hours of it on his live stream.  A link to a vod below if you want to watch.  A great view if you got a couple of hours.
Anyone else going to pick this up?

Just a quick notice to all those who might now already know that you can now disable auto-renewal of your account via the website without having to call them up.

Now I can accept those $1 a month deals without having to mess around on the phone.   ;D

So yeah,  rented it out yesterday. People have been hyped for this game so I thought I would try it out to see what all the fuss was about.  I have to say that so far it isn't doing it for me.

Now I have never played an Elder Scrolls game before so I wasn't fully sure what to expect.  Admittedly, I have only played it for a couple of hours so far.  I have it for the rest of the day so I'll try some more a bit later and see how it goes.

The game looks and sounds absolutely stunning though (X360).

What are your thoughts on it?

General Gaming / Arkham City has finally arrived.

Street date was broken 2 days early. As soon as the Missus got home I jumped in the car and picked it up. So far it is awesome. About 3 hours in. If you liked Asylum you will like this one.

For some reason XBox Live wont accept my Robin code. Says its invalid. Oh well. Worry about that later.

What do you think of this game?

Apparently miss nature wasn't happy enough with flooding the hell out of south east queensland, so now she wants to hit the northern end of it with a cyclone or two.  This one is coming straight for us.
And there is another one near vanuatu that the weather fellas are watching closely.  They reckon it will make its way here and have winds of over 300kph.

Who's excited?

People.  If you have not got this game.  Leave right now and buy it.  This is one of the best games I have ever played.  I have the 360 version.  It's a beautiful thing.  I haven't finished it yet, but I can't wait to see what happens.  I don't think I have enjoyed a game this much in a loooooooooooooooong time.  Graphics are superb.  Combos are awesome.  Story is looking good too.

Anyone else playing this?

Nintendo Gaming / Do you think a Wii 2 will work?
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:26:55 AM »
Hi Ladies and Gents.  It's been a good while since I posted here, so this topic could have been talked about before but I'm not sure, so anyway here goes.

I was browsing on another forum and they were discussing what would be a good next gen system for the 3 brands.  That got me thinking about Nintendo's strategy.  The Wii 2.  Do you all think that it's a smart move?  Think about it.  As we are all painfully aware, the Wii's success is due to it's attractiveness to the casual gamers out there.  Now when you think casual gamer, what springs to your mind, is it a person that will race in to their local electronics retailer for all the new release games on launch day/eve?  Someone that carefully follows all the news regarding the games market on the internet?  Someone that will sit down for hours each day playing games?  Or would a more accurate description be a person who will wait, and grab a game when it's cheaper?  Someone who turns on the game for a half, to an hour a day?  Or more to the point, a person who will buy every new console that comes out, close if not on launch day?

That last question houses my point.  If Nintendo released a Wii 2, with a similar but more advanced control system, do you think it would work?  Generally, casual gamers aren't people who will buy a new games console the day it comes out.  So why would they make an exception for Nintendo?

What do you all think?

General Chat / Anyone play a musical instrument??
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:11:38 PM »
I havent seen a thread like this before so i thought i would ask, who here plays an instrument?  What do you play and why did you start playing?  Also, if you don't play anything, is there anything that you would like to play one day and once again why?

I am a drummer and used to play violin many years ago.  I started drumming purely because i have always admired the art in it and decided that it was my turn to learn it and learn it really well.  I also got my new kit a couple of weeks ago as well.  It gets well used.

I played the violin many years ago but got sick of it and stopped.  And now i am kicking myself for it.  I wish every day that i had kept it up.

Anyway, what about you??

I use the nintendo usb adapter for my online.  In the little connection window, should it always say there is a user connected with a little signal strenght bar?  Because it only seems to do that when i actively use the net, ie. opera browser, shop etc. It says there is no user connected when it is off or just sitting idle?  Should it be doing that? THanks.

I just saw an ad for the Wii.  It was on smack in the Australian Idol final ad breaks.  THey are going right for throat on this one.  That is when pretty much all of australia is watching.  I just hope i see more.  Any other sightings?

Oh and by the way, i havent seen a Nintendo ad for literally years.  The last one i remember seeing was for poke'mon stadium 1.  This is a revolution in itself.  Hats off to NAL.  So far.....

Since you Americans will be enjoying twilight princess this time tomorrow and nowhere else will be, I thought i would take the liberty of creating a thread where all you who will be playing zelda before it lauches anywhere else can go absolutley nuts posting spoilers and other gems which people like me will not want to know until we play the game.  If you want to post spoiler free bits and peices the other TP thread would be good, so we can read without the wory of coming across a spoiler.  Thanks all in advance.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Number and Address Book Revealed
« on: October 28, 2006, 01:35:36 PM »
So this is the new generation friends setup.

For the lazy ones it says that it will be one number for the console rather than each individual game.  These get stored in the address book and this uses the bits and pieces from the message board to do it's thing.

So you think this is better than the DS's setup? Thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / No friend codes for wii?
« on: September 30, 2006, 11:15:42 PM »
I dont know if this has already been covered, but i have read a lot of complaining about the friend code system on the DS, and that it would also carry over to the Wii.  But apparently this might not be the case.

A modifyed version of the system for wii, appears to be similar to the MSN setup.

Yankee Group Finds Sony will Hold off Microsoft and Nintendo in Video Game Console Sales

NEWS RELEASE - 16 AUG 2006
Third-Generation Consoles Emerge as a Significant Channel for Digital Content Distribution

Boston, MA, August 16, 2006—Yankee Group today revealed that despite intense competition from Microsoft and Nintendo, the Sony PlayStation 3 will lead sales in North America - though by a narrow margin. As a result of video game consoles’ emergence as platforms for digital distribution, Microsoft and Sony are engaged in a bruising battle for market dominance. Microsoft is off to a fast start, launching the Xbox 360 nearly 12 months before the PlayStation 3. However, by the time third-generation consoles reach market maturity in 2011, the PlayStation 3 will once again be the market leader.

According to the Yankee Group DecisionNoteSM, Can Sony Hold Off Microsoft as Video Game Consoles Emerge as a Platform for Digital Distribution?, published today, by 2011 the PlayStation 3 will have sold about 30 million units and account for 44% of cumulative third-generation console sales in North America. Comparatively, Microsoft will have sold nearly 27 million units by 2011, accounting for 40% of the market and Nintendo will have sold just over 11 million units, accounting for 16% of the market.

"With a growing installed base of connected consoles, content owners are beginning to recognize the potential video game consoles offer as a distribution channel," said Michael Goodman, Yankee Group Media & Entertainment Strategies Senior Analyst. "Additionally, these platforms will serve as a strong medium for advertising, validating the growing market for in-game and around game advertising."

Additional findings in this Yankee Group DecisionNote include:

• Overall, fewer consoles will be sold this generation. Yankee Group anticipates that as a result of higher console prices, overall unit sales will lag the previous generation of consoles (i.e., PS2, Xbox and GameCube).

• Microsoft will put significant price pressure on Sony during the PS3’s lifecycle. In addition to starting at a lower price than the PS3, Microsoft is well positioned to make a large price cut in the spring of 2007 and each year thereafter—putting significant price pressure on Sony.

What do you think of this one? Obviously time will tell, but I think this guy is a bit of a Sony pawn.

I didn't expect this at all.  Apparently Harvey Norman wants to start selling Nintendo products again after they dropped all Nintendo support. Specifically Wii.  See the link below.

I wonder if they will start selling DS as well.
