Does this mean we can submit news without having to enter all our info everytime?

p.s. I love the "pick all the cat pics" human check at the submit news link.

For some reason the site is not rendering correctly for me. Or I hope it isn't, it is just a long line of stories and information.

Did you test it using AdBlock?  Because the design isn't working right for me.

Yes.  It works fine here using the default Easylist.  If you can tell me which rules are getting triggered, I can take a look.
I'm actively working to squash other bugs though.

It all looked normal for me with:
FireFox +AdBlock
Chrome
Opera
Safari

And normal-ish with Lynx (I mean, as normal as it gets).

Does the forum get a 2.0 update too?

Yes.  It works fine here using the default Easylist.  If you can tell me which rules are getting triggered, I can take a look.

In the E3 awards link is there supposed to be only one page?
and all the game links in that story kick you back out to the front page.

It looks like a mess.  For reference, I'm using Firefox with adblocker.  I see what Vudu posted, but with the small snapshots overlapping the headlines.

Talkback in the stories will be nice, once things are organized.

EDIT: It's showing up properly now, after a few refreshes.

It shows fine for me with
Firefox + AdBlock
Chrome + AdBlock

Chrome I had to refresh a few times, but it eventually loaded correctly and has ever since.

If you're having problems, then it is probably with some sort of extension -- the site looks nearly identical in all browsers.  But I can't help if you don't tell me what's actually getting blocked (I know at least Adblock will tell you if you click its button).

It didn't load up properly when I first visited, but after I logged in, it started working fine. Looking good, I'll have to poke around it a bit.

Might clearing out the cookies help with those with display issues?

Shouldn't matter, but it could be that some old CSS was cached or something... that would explain the layout problems.

BnM - A forum redesign is "on the roadmap".  I know that's kind of a B.S. answer but trust me, we know that the forums don't really match the site at the moment. We want to get the site proper squared away, but now that the redesign is live we can start looking at things like that.

I'd like to extend my thanks to everybody involved, especially Aaron and Ryan Jones.  They did a kick ass job with the site, and this is a huge milestone for NWR.  I hope everybody enjoys it, and bears with us while we work out the kinks.

Either way I really like the whole new NWR 2.0 look. I would love to see what you have planned as far as a forum redesign that matches the front page.
Would that even be possible?

The redesign is fantastic, but I have one criticism. The items in the Previews and Impressions section should indicate which of the two each one is. I'm usually much more interested in impressions than I am in previews, and it would help me out to know which is which. As it is, I'd probably just stick with the Talkback section of the forums, which does make this clear, but I'd rather be able to do it in this great new interface.

They're labeled separately everywhere but the main page listing, but we'll think about it.

While I love the Web 2.0 ness have you uh, have you seen what the layout fucking looks like in Safari? I think you need to get back to suing some W3C standard markup language.

Seriously right now it's fucked.
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendoworldreport.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

Fix those errors though!

I am not completely sold on this myself. It's a bit too "dense" for my liking.

It's alright though, since I get the headlines primary through RSS.

The front page login is good stuff.

edit - Oh, one more thing, good work replacing that flash based headline banner.

Front page doesn't work very well using Chrome with a non-widescreen monitor.  You can't read half of the article titles because they are covered by images.  I suspect that having a widescreen monitor would fix the problem but have no way to test and am not upgrading in the short term.

I like the idea, but the execution might still need some tweaking.   ;D
Title: Re: Welcome to the New Nintendo World Report!
Post by: MegaByte on June 28, 2010, 10:10:07 AM
The front page should be fine for 1024 and above, which is not widescreen.  We found that only about 2% of non-phone visitors have a lower resolution than that.

First article I clicked on froze my browser.  Not exactly a great first impression. ;)

I thought the old design was fine.  I get so used to certain sites that I tend to know them by feel so if you so much as move a link I'll click the wrong spot almost every time.  So it will take me a while to get used to this.  By then I'll probably like it fine.

Congratulations and nice work!  This is a huge improvement visually and a very nice step forward.

My one complaint is the silly blur effect when you mouse over the top links.  It has never made sense to me to blur what you're looking at.  If you're really in love with the effect, I suggest blurring the other items instead.  Alternatively, blurring the image would make overlay text easier to read, so it would actually serve a purpose if a blurb appeared, too.  That said, I think if you were to do that, it would look better to blur the entire group of images and use all that space for the blurb.

"The front page should be fine for 1024 and above, which is not widescreen.  We found that only about 2% of non-phone visitors have a lower resolution than that."

Hmm... I'm at 1024 resolution with a 4:3 screen and it's definitely not fine.  Actually, let me add a quick note: for Chrome on Windows XP it's no good.  For the same browser and resolution on Windows 7 it's fine, and the page looks great.

If it's just 2% then don't worry about it... but until I get a new monitor or start using the newer PC for casual stuff like web browsing, any interest in visiting the site "as is" will be shot.  I'm only a casual visitor anyway so it's not a big loss.

Two final comments:
(1) not a fan of the blur effect either, especially because it sometimes isn't removed correctly when the cursor is moved quickly across the screen.  After bringing the cursor back over the blurred picture, it resets and works correctly.  Is that just me, or do others have the same experience?
(2) what a great group photo for the E3 2010 Awards article!  Looks like you guys had a fun time.

Quick note: I didn't (intentionally) change any settings, but the page is displaying correctly now in my browser.  The image blur effect is still getting "stuck" sometimes when the cursor moves quickly across the images at the top of the page, but that's only a minor annoyance.
