Well, seeing this thread has been up for quite a while now, lets discuss DS sales over in Japan.

And lets hope it will finally catch up to PSP in sales... considering it's been outselling DS for over 2 months now.

I'll care when it can outsell the DS for more than one week, anything else is just a hiccup.

In addition its not really that big of a deal because all this shows is that the system sales which are by now nearing 3 million for the DS are experiencing the post holiday slowdown, while the PSP hasn't yet reached the slow down in demand because of the early shortages.

platform this week last week 2005 total
1 PlayStation 2 65,837 124,401 189,238
2 PSP 64,602 62,052 126,654
3 Nintendo DS 53,527 108,561 162,088
4 GameBoy Advance SP 18,289 70,851 89,140
5 GameCube 7,475 19,703 27,178
6 Gameboy Advance 588 1,719 2,307
7 Xbox 506 1,179 1,685

I expected this. I think the PSP and DS may frequently alternate the lead like the SNES/Genesis rivalry. It's not a problem right now though if the PSP starts to consistently outsell the DS and overtakes the DS install base by significant amounts then there will be a problem.

My real concern is more how the PSP will do in North America where the quirkiness of the DS is not as big of a selling feature as it is in Japan.

Well as the numbers show the PSP didn't sell much more than the previous week(64,602 vs. 62,052); instead it was the demand for the DS dropped by almost half (53,527 vs. 108,561 ) this indicates more a slow down in DS demand due to the post holiday slump rather than a rise in PSP demand.

Supported by the DS software sales which continue to outpace the PSP:

platform title publisher this week total
1 GBA Mario Party Advance Nintendo 67,927 new
2 PS2 Gran Turismo 4 SCE 63,584 843,340
3 PS2 Gikei Eiyuden From Software 41,927 new
4 DS Sawaru Made in Wario Nintendo 33,537 575,069
5 PS2 Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special Square Enix 25,264 299,989
6 PS2 Dragon Quest VIII: Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi Square Enix 23,858 3,235,861
7 DS Super Mario 64 DS Nintendo 22,671 593,831
8 PSP Minna no GOLF Portable SCE 18,682 N/A
9 PS2 METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER Konami 18,166 790,518
10 PSP Shin Sangoku Musou Koei 17,070 N/A

Again from gamescience.

As you can see the PSP games are trailing the DS sales by a fair margin, indicating that its more that those who wanted the DS this early already have it and as a result the hardware sales have slowed. Expect them to start up again in march or april.

As for the DS vs. PSP in NA, remember that the DS actually has sold faster here in the US than in Japan, seems American gamers are intrigued by the innovation of the touchscreen.

This is what makes me sad:

31%: PSP Market Share
25%: DS Market Share
31%: PS2 Market Share
09%: GBA Market Share
00%: Xbox Market Share (Assumed)

96%: Total

This leaves only 4% for poor old GameCube. Quite sad, indeed.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

When is Jump Superstars out? Pokemon won't be out for ages.

Why aren't the Japanese buying Band Brothers and Hitofude? Morons.

Catch! Touch! Yoshi! is released there next week, it should give the DS a boost, even though I think both systems are still sold out so these hardware sales mean nothing.

Japanese Sales Figures (1/9) [ Media Create ]

Since it is a new year the total sales for hardware has been reset. However, because of the handheld war between the Nintendo DS and PSP we have added a column after current year total which is the systems total since their respective launch.

Software
1. Gran Turismo 4 - PS2 - 145,027 - 779,796
2. Tales Of The World - GBA - 81,045 - 81,045
3. Wario Ware: Touched! - NDS - 63,214 - 271,150
4. Super Mario 64 DS - NDS - 46,098 - 571,160
5. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater - PS2 - 42,005 - 772,352
6. Dragon Quest VIII - PS2 - 37,507 - 3,212,003
7. Mega Man Battle Network 5 - GBA - 35,100 - 84,758
8. Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy - PS2 - 32,903 - 274,785
9. Mario Party 6 - GC - 30,626 - 499,555
10. Pokemon Dash - NDS - 29,813 - 77,869

Hardware

3. Game Boy Advance SP - 70,851 - (70,851)
4. PSP - 62,052 - (62,052) - [544,304]
5. GameCube - 19,703 - (19,703)

That Wario Ware total is wrong. It should be 571,150 or something. The Pokemon Dash total should be a few hundred thousand higher too.

800,000 for PSP may not sound like much to us, but for Sony it's a huge number. After all, they're starting with zero market share against the company the has owned the handheld since it created it years and years ago. When was the last time a non-Nintendo handheld did this well?

The wonderswan has sold 3 million systems in Japan. The Neo Geo Pocket (or was it the game gear? i dont know, one of them) sold 10 million systems worldwide. PSP still hasn't reached "wonderswan level failure" yet. I'd say it's about N-Gage level failure right now, moving up towards wonderswan.

Well the good news about this is that DS games are still selling heaps more than any PSP titles. 1st party and 3rd party DS games are selling better than PSP's best selling games.

For Nintendo that means better 3rd party support. If publishers know that the DS will have more sales, then thats the system they will have their development studios make games for.

I wished Capcom would have waited to see sales of RE4 in both countries or atleast in the U.S. to see how profitable it would be to keep exclusitivity instead of just announcing the PS2 version which will make Japanese sales figures go down.

lol Mario... learn to think next time you post. The wonderswan sold 3 million units. Okay. Now when did the wonder swan (and NGPC, and GG) come out? Yeah that's what I thought. The PSP has sold 800,000 in about a month in Japan, far eclipsing any other non-Nintendo handheld.

So those numbers were fake? A-ha ha ha... man, that's even better that someone would stoop to that level and make those up, then the fact that the DS is still outselling the PSP.

He's simply saying that the PSP isn't a huge success yet. Will it beat the Wonder Swan in time? Of course, but it's not there yet. Although the limited supply is probably a huge factor here.
