Resident Evil 4 Tops January Sales Chart

NPD data indicates The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Super Mario 64 DS place third, ninth and tenth respectively.

Did You Know?

Resident Evil 4 Hacks its Way to the Top of Sales All Three Nintendo Systems Place Games in the Top 10

Capcom's pulse-pounding Resident Evil(R) 4, made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube(TM) beat all other video games in January sales.  It's also one of the best-reviewed games in years. The sales boom no doubt has been driven by reviews that call the game "an absolute must-have," "an amazing achievement" and "early contender for game of the year." Resident Evil 4 boasts no fewer than 30 perfect ratings from magazine and online reviewers, and some 55 others that rate it at 90 percent or higher.

But if crazed townsfolk and monstrous creatures aren't your thing, Nintendo has plenty of other top-selling games to keep you occupied.  According to the NPD Group's January sales tracking report, each Nintendo video game system had at least one game in January's top 10 sellers. In addition to Resident Evil 4 at No. 1, Nintendo continued its dominance of the hand-held market with The Legend of Zelda(R): The Minish Cap for Game Boy(R) Advance SP at No. 3 overall, Square Enix's KINGDOM HEARTS(R) CHAIN OF MEMORIES for GBA SP at No. 9 and Super Mario(R) 64 DS for Nintendo DS(TM) at No. 10.

Say Cloud Strife you wouldn't happen to be able to post the exact sales numbers every month would you? An
all-time sales list post for the site would be extremely useful as well.

sorry I don't have these things saved onto my PC or anything. I can find numbers for a few months back but not much further. I do have the numbers for the top selling GC games though. Here is the top 10 if you're interested.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: 2,694,626
Super Mario Sunshine: 1,840,879
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!: 1,830,128
The Wind Waker: 1,786,274
Luigi's Mansion: 1,608,383
Metroid Prime: 1,272,897
Mario Party 4: 968,567
Animal Crossing: 914,622
Mario Party 5: 813,475
Star Fox Adventures: 800,995

Those are the top 10 selling games for GC made by Nintendo. Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart, and Metroid Prime numbers do NOT include the games sold in bundles so the numbers aren't really as big as they should be. I know the Mario Kart bundle sold over a million though.

ironically this is basically the top 10 list overall for GC even when you include third party games. The only 3rd party game in the top 10 is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle which has sold 1,050,066 as of december and in January it sold 19,654 so just add those two numbers together, sorry I don't feel like doing math

Yeah, I'm aware that NPD data isn't usually published like that.  Which is why I wondered where you got it.  I'm curious about how well Doom 3 has sold to date... have that anywhere?

Btw this data only accounts for the U.S. correct?

At those prices why wouldn't you pick it up, even if it is just for collection purposes?

A store near me called gameware has some old N64 titles (some new some used).  Just a few leftovers.  I'm so tempted to buy hybrid heaven, but it's 25 bucks and it probably sucks  I used to think it was related to metal gear for some reasont hough.

Most stores in my area that sell games still sell brand new N64 games.  The prices tend to vary from ridiculously expensive ($80 CAN which is more than new Cube games cost) to really cheap ($20 or lower for classics like Perfect Dark or Conker).  That's not bad I guess since I doubt Cube games will be widely available this many years after its "death."  Perfect Dark still selling over 1000 copies is really cool.  One reason I was so upset about Super Mario 64 DS is that I could still buy Super Mario 64 brand new in several stores which at the very least I couldn't do with any of the Super Mario Advance games.

This I find weird as hell: "GCN PREVIEW DISC $1,642 197"

Nearly 200 people bought an out-of-date Cube preview disc in January?  Why?

As someone said above, the demo disk is probably still selling for collection purposes... I know quite a few stores finally dropped the price of them to a resonable level in the past couple months.

Watch for a spike in N64 sales next month due to the 90% off clearance at Toys R Us... my store had like 20 copies of Perfect Dark for 1 buck a piece... every other TRU that still has N64 games should have whatever they have left at around that price point, so they should definately move some units.

That's a lot of numbers.

I want to be happy, but being the top game for a slow month isn't really that impressive. Last year, Sonic Heroes took the top spotm, and it got Ok-mediocre reviews *remember's jonny's review*.  RE 4 selling less than half a million right off the bat? On the bright side, it didn't get lost in the holiday shuffle, that would've really sucked....

I'm awfully pessmesstic about RE's future on the Revolution. This whole 'exclusivity' deal didn't neccessarly work out for both parties (Capcom announcing the PS2 version before the 'Cube version came out is a prime example.). Capcom got burned, and Nintendo didn't shed its KiTTy image. This kickass game just came too late.

Oh well. Enough bitchin', back to Assignment Ada...

Sorry I don't have Doom 3 numbers, I don't get PC numbers.

And just because it's January doesn't make RE4s sales less impressive, it opened bigger than MGS3 on the PS2 and many other big name games as well

As for the N64 games, thats how much money Nintendo made, not how much the store sold them for

Cloud Strife thanks for the Top 10 list, who'd of thought that Sunshine would outsell WindWaker (even if it was released earlier) and that Starfox Adventures would crack the Top 10! I bet Eternal Darkness didn't even crack the top 50, proving yet again that quality isn't always everything (or in some cases, not even computed into the equation!)

RE: Resident Evil 4 Tops January Sales Chart
« Reply #17 on: February 23, 2005, 05:49:42 AM »
everyone should have thought that sunshine would outsell TWW
Mario 3 outsold Zelda and Zelda 2
Mario World outsold Lttp, so did Mario World 2
Mario 64 outsold OOT
it's only natrual that Sunshine outsell TWW

As for Eternal Darkness, I know it was at the bottom of the top 50 last year it probably got pushed out, I'll check for you soon

Edit-Well I just checked and as of December 2004 it's number 51 right behind Tales of Symphonia. it's sold 273,168 in North America. Not too good if you ask me

Edit again-SFA isn't in the GC top 10, if you include third party games it's number 11 since Sonic Adventure 2 outsold it. but it did better than I thought it would. Maybe Assault will put up similar numbers but I doubt it

I think Super Mario Sunshine sold more than Wind Waker largely because of the Gamecube's popularity at the time.  Mario Sunshine was released when the Cube's placing in the console wars wasn't yet decided and at the time it was thought to be THE GAME to make the Cube a serious contender.  So obviously it attracted a fair bit of attention.

When Wind Waker was released things were different.  The Xbox had beat the Cube the previous Christmas with the Sega pack-in deal and the Cube was considered the "loser" console of this generation.  Plus a lot of people had been disappointed by Super Mario Sunshine which was supposed to be the reason to own a Cube and thus had lost interest in Nintendo and/or traded in their Cube.  Plus third parties were starting to bail and "Nintendo is doomed" discussions started popping up.

Super Mario Sunshine was released when people still felt the Cube could amount to something while Wind Waker was released when people felt it was a failure.  That's why 7 of the top ten Cube games were released prior to Christmas 2002.  That was the turning point when the Xbox became the clear number 2 console in North America.

I think you're wrong considering that Zelda passed SMS a few months after it released. Zelda had the OOT deal going for it which made it the fastest selling GC game at the time. It was also given away for free with GC (as well as a few other games like Prime/StarFox/Mario Party). Nintendo had the deal of buying a GC and getting one of those games for free. Those sales counted.

Mario is just simply more popular than Zelda. The hardcore Nintendo fans seem to like Zelda the best but Mario has more mass market appeal just because he's Mario. And the sales I posted don't even include the extra 600,000 sold with the shine bundle, while the Zelda sales do include the ones given away free with GC(which is because they are sold over the counter so NPD counts them as individual sales, the shine bundle just counted for Gamecube sales)

If Mario 128 is a platformer and does indeed release this year on GC, I'll bet any amount of money that it will outsell the new Zelda

ugh I need an avatar

I realize that Mario has vastly superior mainstream recognition than the Zelda franchise and has historically out-preformed it in sales I merely reasoned that due to the fact that Windwaker was seen as such a superior product to SMS in the eyes of a majority of publications and hardcore fans (myself included) and operating under the assumption that a large contingent of Gamecube owners are hardcore fanboys such as myself who actually pay attention to what other gamers or organizations feel about a game instead of just rushing out and purchasing 8 zillion copies of Enter the Matrix or MoH: RS, as they have been known to do, that Link would finally one-up Mario. Must be those darn kids out there inflating SMS sales! Though we probably couldn't make it without them
