TalkBack / Re: Some Wii U Features Require Day-One Update
« on: November 08, 2012, 11:02:43 AM »
The big question on my mind:  Will Wii U properly handle Daylight Savings Time? :)  I can't speak for Xbox 360 or Vita, but all other consoles that I've gotten my hands on do not.

Ps3 does it, i'm pretty sure.  Shame the 3DS doesn't!

Never cared for the old castle of illusion (didn't play it at release), but i'm interested in the new one!  The demo will decide if it's on a christmas list or not.

I don't really care that much, but I don't think warawara plaza is a good name in the west.  I think people will start calling it something else, maybe with less syllables.  I'll just call it 'the plaza'.

Can you boot the system up without the gamepad?  Say the battery is dead and all I have available is a wii remote or a pro controller.  Can I get to the game without hitting the disk icon on the gamepad?

Wow that sucks we get 50 stupid songs for $60 but they get 90,000  :'(

Karaoke is way more popular over there, though.  I also don't see american users paying money to play a karaoke game for a set amount of time.  But who knows.

I'm tired of nintendo saying things are too complicated.  It makes them look weak, honestly.  "Yeah we wanted to do online in pikmin, but we couldn't figure it out.  It was too complicated."

Fine, if it's honestly too complicated to fit within your budget/target, then don't do it, but don't say that it was too complicated!  It makes it sound like having some smarter people on your team could have solved it, but you didn't have anyone smart enough.

Just in time for the holidays!  That would be great!

I had never thought of the point that jonny brought up about wiiU tablet vs smartglass/vita.  The tablet will just WORK.  That's all consumers want.  They want it to work, they want it to work the first time they do it, they want it to work with everything they do.  2nd screen support will work for every game, and it will work well, and it will work every time.  The other two will require downloads, updates, not every game (i'd be surprised if it's more than a handful EVER) will support it.  If i've learned anything about video game peripherals/gimmicks/whatever you call it, is that in order for the tech so succeed, EVERY consumer has to have one, not just a portion of your market.  That's why GBA/GC link cables/motion plus/PS Move/etc never really lived up to their full potential - no one wanted to support it because only a fraction of the market place had them/understood the concept.  The wii U tablet has potential to do some really neat stuff, but only because it WORKS and everyone has one.

While I dont think anyone's disappointed in this, I'm kinda surprised.  Didnt the call of duties sell really well on DS/Wii, even though they had a much lower budget?  I figured it was almost free money.  Maybe sales declined last year/whenever they stopped?

Sounds to me like Nintendo said 'no' to Origin support on Wii U, so EA said no to Nintendo.  Their loss, I guess.

I like how nintendo gives us dry spells and then literally 5 decent eshop downloads in a single day.  Why couldnt they spread this stuff out a bit more?  I dont think anyone would have complained if liberation maiden were next week or something, or even those GB/NES games.

Can we get a word on if/when it'll be a digital download?  I'm getting it on Wii U, but i'll only get it on 3DS if it's digital.

This seems really fun, but not 40 dollars fun.  I'll wait for it to be on sale on amazon, or maybe ask for it for christmas.

Gives me very high hopes for a digital release for the west.  This is the kind of game I always want to have on me when I have my 3DS.  Pretty much any multiplayer game is great for digital, whereas single player stuff is good for retail copies (let friends play it, sell it back, etc).

Dark Souls has utter bullshittery too. Take for example Curse - instant death, respawn with 1/2 life. It lasts forever (and can stack) unless you manage to reach a random dude some distance from the closest spawn point - with half of your HP.

There is also an item that removes curse, which drops off ONE type of bad guy or can be bought off another NPC.  The game does not tell you this, but you will very likely meet this NPC way before you get cursed.  So if you look through his shop and read all the tooltips, you'd know how to remove curse as well.

The game does not explain this, and to some that is BS, but I really liked figuring it out.

For the love of glob!  Can we get some over in the US!?  I'm now replaying my picross DS game for the 2nd time, and will move onto picross 3D for the second time as well.   I bough mario picross DAY ONE to show support.  What's the hold up!?  it's not like localizing these games takes a lot of work.

So if I don't like La Mulana's approach to progression or mechanics then I wouldn't like Dark Souls? I've heard the guys at 8-4 talk about Dark Souls quite a bit and it sounded intriguing. If it's level design and puzzles are anything like La Mulana though, maybe it's not for me.

Probably not.  It requires a lot of trial and error.  Right off the bat, you're given 3 different directions you can go, one of which is slightly less difficult than the other two, implying that is the path to take.  Then after a while, the path splits again, and you have to run head first into each of them and figure out which of the paths is the least difficult, etc etc.  So part of the difficulty comes from going on one path that is deliberately made too difficult because you're not supposed to go there yet, so the game kills you as a way of saying it's too soon.  However, if you're good enough at the game, you can take those difficult paths right off the bat and be rewarded with really good loot.  But if you don't like that style of progression, then you probably wont' like the game, because it punishes you for choosing incorrectly.

Jonny, everything you love about La mulana is exactly why I love Dark souls.  Sure the gameplay is technically different, and I suppose that can be a turn off, but that is EXACTLY how dark souls is, just with a different game engine. I IMPLORE you to take another stab at it, and please try not to be turned off by the gameplay mechanics, because the soul of the game is nearly identical to why you are loving la mulana.
