So you have a month before the new Kirby, why not play some old Kirby games?

Kirby turns 30 in 2022 and to celebrate, Kirby and the Forgotten Land launches on Nintendo Switch on March 25. But what if you wanted to start the party earlier? Well, here's a video with six recommendations of games to check out before the new Kirby hits. It's not all encompassing (and there's definitely some excellent Kirby games not on this list), but it's all about giving you some reasonably accessible (at least until the Wii U and 3DS eShops shut down in March 2023!) Kirby games that you can enjoy. So go and enjoy! Kirby rules and so do these games.

The Kirby series is right up there with Mario in terms of just the sheer volume of inventive new entries, most of which are well received. It’s crazy to think of just how many quality Kirby titles are spread out over all of Nintendo’s consoles and handhelds over the decades. Forgotten Land looks to be yet another winner from HAL.

Even though it's not traditional Kirby, I'm going to shout out that more people need to play Mass Attack for the DS, which is currently available on the Wii U DS Virtual Console.  It's basically a 2D Pikmin, with some of the craziest level variety I've ever seen in a videogame.  It also has some really good unlockable mini-games, that are very well polished in their own right.

This is why I'm really excited for Forgotten Land since HAL has shown they can deliver quality experiences outside of the traditional Kirby experience.  Even though Forgotten Land is their first 3D Kirby game, games like Canvas Curse and Mass Attack were also quite different and they really hit a home run with both on their first try.  Hell, something like Star Stackers is a puzzle game on the Gameboy that I didn't experience until 2018, and it still blew me away by how good it was, and I'm someone that normally isn't big into these kind of games.  So even though HAL is best known for traditional Kirby games that follow a certain template, they've proven time and time again they can do something different and still maintain a high level of quality.

While I have played the six mentioned in the video, there are still several Kirby games I haven't gotten to yet. These include the aforementioned Mass Attack and the rest on DS, as well as stuff like Rainbow Curse. I probably won't get to them anytime soon unfortunately...

I recently picked up Kirby and the Amazing Mirror on GBA. I’m excited to play it though it was one of the Ambassador Games which I’ve ignored for nearly 11 years.

As someone else with a huge backlog, that's understandable.  But I would still heavily advise trying Mass Attack sooner then later, since it's a total masterpiece.  It's right up there with the best of Mario when it comes to just the insane level variety this game offers.  Easily one of the best games released for the DS.

Mass Attack is an odd game. There is a lot to like about the game. It felt like a big Kirby celebration with all kinds of callbacks to things. It was almost like a summation of what HAL had been doing with Kirby on the DS up to that point. However, I did get a bit tired of trying to collect all the Gold Stars as there were a few levels and bosses I felt like I just had to keep fighting over and over as I tried to avoid damage against them. I did eventually get them all but the grind did take away some of the positive vibes I had about the game.

If you look at the Kirby catalogue going from Super Star Ultra on DS to now then Mass Attack definitely is one of the top games among those releases and part of what I call the modern Kirby renaissance after a sort of shaky period at the start of the millennium from like 2001 - 2007. After the release of Super Star Ultra, Kirby just seemed to go on a run of top titles in the series slowing down a bit after the release of Planet Robobot. I guess that's another reason why I'm getting excited about Forgotten Land. It looks to have the potential of getting Kirby out of the dip of the so-so titles I feel have been released since then.
