My 480p TV and the WiiU
« on: December 02, 2012, 04:21:56 PM »
Quick question for those knowledgeable on the subject.

My current TV's highest resolution is 480p.  I still do not have a WiiU, but am planning on buying one.  Will the WiiU games only look like very nice looking Wii games because of my 480p limitation?  Thanks!

You will have higher polygon counts, better textures, more characters on screen, etc...just nothing above 480p resolution.

yeah, it really boggles me how people think HD means better graphics, HD just means a higher resolution.

Depends what you call "better graphics" but it's easy to argue that the same game running at 1080p on a 1080p TV and 480p on a 1080p will have "better graphics" when running at 1080p.

Like I had to drill into my friend's head: higher resolution does not mean better graphics. Is Pong at the same graphical fidelity as Battlefield 3? Some of the PS3 games I owned I actually preferred on my old SDTV.

But my point is, if your monitory supports high resolution, and your console or PC can support that resolution, and if the game itself more specifically supports that resolution, of course it will look much better. My brother had his XBox 360 set to SDTV (even though he was using component cables) and then one day I showed him the switch and set it to 1080p, and it was a night and day type difference.

How many inches is your TV? that can make a difference as well.

Its a thirty nine incher, and I sit about the same length away as I did with my old TV: about four feet away?

39 inches at four feet? I would think you would need to turn your head back and forth to take in the whole picture.

Nope. It fits perfectly in my field of vision. It works really well with FPS's.

Thanks for all the responses.  Glad I didn't use the word "graphics" in my original question.   :P:

My 480p TV is a 32 inch TV and I sit probably 6 feet from it.

When I first got my PS3 I played it exclusively on a 27" 480i TV via composite cables, which is worse than your situation. Games like Uncharted looked noticeably better than anything in the GameCube era on that TV. Then when I got a HDTV, they looked way better than they did on my old TV. So yes, Wii U games will look better, but not as good as they could. Although, maybe this is less of an issue with the Wii U as I've heard plenty of people say that games look really good on the GamePad, even if that has a resolution around 480p.

Depends on the games but some games use very fine print that's kinda hard to read in lower resolution, ran into that issues with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood on the Xbox (when my HDTV died).

For the most part you shouldn't have an issue but some games have to many menues and what not hinder your view especially if your using 4:3 ratio.

For the most part you should be fine though.

i should go to say better graphics are:

Higher Polygon Models
More Dynamic Lighting
higher resolution textures
more pixel shaders
sub surface scattering
tri-quatralinear texture filtering
higher framerate
reflections
volumetric fog
particle effects
anti-aliasing
higher definition
bump mapping
normal mapping

all put to use at the same time.

Wanna know something funny?  I just got my WiiU, hooked it up, and it's running at 1080p!  I THOUGHT my TV was only a 480p b/c I've never run anything in HD on it!!  I'm super-psyched!!  I honestly couldn't remember from when I bought it.

Yes, I'm an Amish guy who just bought a WiiU.

I know it sounds stupid, but I bought the TV like 4 years ago and at the time, I was pretty much at Amish-level knowledge when I went out and bought it, not paying attention to the resolution.  Our old tube-style TV broke and I just needed to replace it.

So, as I've only had a Wii and a DVD player hooked up to it ever since, when I turned either of those devices on, "480p" would pop up in the corner.  I assumed that was all it was capable of.
