General Gaming / RE:PS3 needs adapter to play saved PS1 and PS2 games..
« on: August 07, 2006, 12:11:02 PM »
It is puzzling why a Memory card slot wasn't just put in the first place along with whatever the PSP uses and just have the two and be done with it.

I had a feeling an adpator was coming, not much point in backwards compatability if you can't save your games anywhere. I didn't see it on the sony website but I can only guess that once you upload game saves to the PS3 that you can then just load/save your games right from there? That would make the most sense at this point.

This whole thing scares me though. Used to be, you could buy a new system day one and be ok. (Gameboy, Genesis, SNES, NES, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, Sega Master System, Atari) But now, the trend is that you should wait a year to make sure all production problems are ironed out after product launch.

It's no surprise those are all Cart based systems that are the most reliable and I assume easy to manufacture.
Nothing against disc based media but damn, the flaws are just unacceptable.

General Gaming / RE:Spong (And Others) Says PS3 $499

Yeah but see that is how they get you sucked in. Some exec. spews out some crazy number and then months later (oh would you look at that, E3 is just around the corner :P) Sony announces the official price which ofcourse is much lower (even if only $100) thus the people say "well that ain't so bad now" cushioning the blow.

Regardless of price I'm not sure I will be buying any of the next-gen systems. Simply have other things going on right now so gaming has to take a back seat for the moment.

That's just evidence of nostalgia (and rooting for the underdog) blinding objectivity. Also happened with BG&E, another crappy overrated game.

You may not agree that it's crappy but let's not make ridiculous claims. It's not innovative in the least. It's just a typical platformer with an abundance of charm that would be far better used in an adventure game.

Unfortunately the critical acclaim might encourage Tim Schafer to deliver another waste of his talents.

You should be shot.

That's when i'd call it dead

I seriously hope you aren't saying this game is bad. Gamecube can only dream off having such a great game and one I wish Gamecube did have.

Fortunately I can still trust PGC's reviews.

I could never understand how people base their choices on any review.

Is it really that hard to judge a game based on pictures? Doesn't anyone know what they like? Long before the internet came along i would buy a game mag, look at the pics read what the game is about (not what the reviewer thought of the games) and based on that alone I could make a decision to buy or rent. Thats how it was done back then and it WORKED 99% of the time and still does today (i've never bought a game I didn't like).

It really isn't that hard everyone. I like watching a movie of a game as much as the next guy now-a-days but like i said, it's not hard to make a decision with just some pics and synopsis of what the game is about (or in some cases you should already know what to expect like sports games).

(note Ian I'am talking in general and not just aimed at you, I was just using your post as a reference point to start mine, thanks)

General Gaming / RE:No Backwards Compatability for Xbox 2
« on: April 16, 2005, 08:56:04 AM »
Not too mention Backwards Compatability is a great way for the manufacturer to drop support for legacy systems. This means no need to stock parts for these older systems. All you have to do is support your current system (which plays all your previous gens games) which would be cheaper then support it and all before it I would think.

So really BC is a win/win situation for both consumer and manufacturer. Sure it's tough to get it 100% but it's worth when you weigh against not having it.

I think the DS is a different case though. Since it's suppose to be bringing a new way of gaming it's understandable why your buying it for that reason and not to play your GB/GBC/GBA games on it (thats what a GBP is for ).

General Gaming / RE:Ill-feelings towards SNES-era Nintendo?
« on: February 18, 2005, 11:29:16 AM »
At first, but then Nintendo redesigned the carts and in so doing made those plastic sleeves rather redundant. Thus they stopped including them with games.

Footnote: If i recall correctly the reason why Nintendo redesigned the carts is because people were just pulling there carts out of the system instead of doing the smart thing and push the eject button. The 1st version of the snes has a latch that comes out and goes into that groove in the front middle of the carts when you turn on the power. So when these idiots were pulling there games out they were wrecking there SNES's. Serves them right for being that stupid.

That writers of that article clearly haven't got a F**king clue as to what they're talking about. I admit the genesis did give the snes a run for it's money BUT ONLY because of Sega's then "hip" and "cool" style of advertising.

That was the only thing that made the genesis popular, it's marketing campaign. Pound for pound the SNES just delivered while the genesis was just lacking. Lucky for sega most North americans are followers and like to be lied too (blast proccessing anyone?).

Funny enough, the only thing that I was jealous about the genesis being a SNES fan is that genesis games came in those plastic cases whereas we only got cardboard. I would have gladly paid more if it meant having my games in those kind of cases.

That sounds a lot like the NES MAX controller. It's d-pad was a circle within a circle too and you moved it around just like that. I've always wished for the max design to make a return, it was really my favorite NES controller.

While I was hoping for the box set like the one that was release in japan awhile back, i guess this will have to do. I never got around to getting either so this is good for me.

I still wish though that capcom got off it's rear-end and actually put the time and effort into RE 2,3, CV like they did with RE0 & RE1. Couple all that with RE4 and thats what I would call a pure evil collection!

General Gaming / RE:PSTwo to be released this Oct.?
« on: September 20, 2004, 02:00:59 PM »
Yes, Oct 26 is the 4 year anniversary of the PS2's launch.

I think it makes sense why sony has been hush hush about this. For one thing, PS2's have been becoming harder and harder to find in stores because they want to sell off all exhisting hardware and before announcing the new PStwo. If they announce it now, consumers will just wait for the new unit instead of buying old stock now.

Second, what better way to compete then to release a whole new look and GTA? I'm sure Sony has some kind of marketing blitz lined up to take a little bit of halo 2's wind out of it's sail.

To be honest I don't doubt for a moment though all 3 players are going to do great this 4th qtr. imo.

I for one think the PStwo is coming out Oct 26. there have been too many coincidences for me to deny it otherwise. Personally, I'm glad as I've been waiting to get a ps2 now so I'm going to get this for sure.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New Square game

I loved the saga series, always have. I think you children just don't like open-ended difficult games that don't spoon feed you on where to go or what to do next. See, RPG's are about exploration more so then story. It's only with the new generations that think story is everything.

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't understand the saga series, much like I do.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Move forward nintendo!
« on: June 10, 2004, 01:28:18 PM »
You make some good points PugGTI but there are few things I would like to add on and clarify on others.

A) I think Connectivity has been getting a bad rap. Not saying the arguments against it are not legitiment reasons but the fact there hasn't been much incentive to use a $100+/- controller (GBAsp). Now FF:CC and TLoZ:FSA do make excellent use of it, but two games (no matter how fantastic, I have both) isn't going to be enough to sway popular opinion. IMO, I think there is a future for connectivity just not by itself. I don't want to sound like another 'Nintendo needs online' guy but I can see many gaming possibilities with the combination of connectivity and online gaming together!

B) Here is where you made your mistake. First, The only dev out of those 3 that you mentioned that is gone is Rare as they were bought out by Microsoft. Silicon Knights and Factor 5 can and probubly will make games for Nintendo. You mistook the announcement when you heard SK and F5 are leaving. I don't know what Sk is up to but I assume they are doing the same thing that F5 is doing and that is working on Next gen software since there isn't much time left in this gen to do much of anything that would stand out in the already big crowd.

Also, out of those 3 (heck any GC dev) Factor 5 has pushed the GC WAY BEYOND it's spec's and even the all mighty xbox's which has not been able to beat Rogue squadron 3's specs, or more exactly, no other developer has been able to match it thus far, so when it comes to talent I got to give a tip of my hat to them and not Retro but that doesn't mean Retro isn't good in there own right, I mean they did take a 2-d adventure game and bring it into 3-d without losing that games classic adventure 'feel' (I'am ofcourse referring to Metroid Prime) afterall.

Throwing cash around doesn't do anything (just ask Microsoft about there purchase of rare). But your right, Nintendo should have a little more variety of it's OWN franchises and I think they are solving that. Look at whats coming from them, we got Metroid's (action/adventure), Zelda's(adventure), Geist (fps), Marios(platformers?, sports), Pikmin(strategy). I think Nintendo is covering a lot of bases with just those alone. As for different franchises Nintendo is bringing out donkey konga, mario party 6 that supposidly(sp?) doesn't use controllers and uses an 'eye toy' prepheral for the GC (I think so anyway) so it doesn't matter weather you or me or anyone else likes it or not, the fact is, it's a new way of gaming.

C) I agree with you here too, I think Nintendo should give us those SD card adapters. That is ofcourse dependant on the cost. Last I checked, SD cards were at about 1 gig so these could very well act as HDD's, couple that with some D/L content goodness and online/connectivity gaming and I think were all set here. But ofcourse the big question of all this is cost so we will have to wait and see.

D) I guess this plays with what were both saying about variety. Not only should Nintendo carry a good variety of it's own software but to make contracts with all the 3rd party devs out there and get games for every genre especially RPG's and sports since those two areas have seem to be Nintendo's weakest points (system library wise anyway).

E) Heh, just the other night I did a little cut and pasting in windows paint and put together my dream controller. It goes roughly as follows: (btw, picture a N64 controller without the middle handle and z trigger to get an idea)

-6 Face buttons like the xbox buttons. Not the layout but the type of buttons
-n64/snes style D-pad
-GBAsp screen in middle
-2 analog sticks like PS2
-Wireless
-rumble
-start/select
-GC style L&R shoulder buttons
-Memory card slot for GC and SD card adpaters.

whew, well thats enough out of me .  Personally, I think Nintendo made a huge 180 with the GC compared to the travisty that was the N64. I don't care if anyone disagrees with me or what anyone else thinks, that thing was a huge dissapointment period, especially since guys like me were coming off the SNES, there was a lot to live up to and the n64 did not deliver, luckily, the GC is making amends and I think if Nintendo holds it's course (especially if they do what were all saying here ) and continues to change I think we're in for a real treat next gen.

I really like that idea of using a touch screen for buttons. I guess somthing like that would be on the right side of the controller where the buttons normally go. If there is any problem i can see arising from this is the tactile interface with it.

I assume most of us don't look at the controller when we play, we just move our digits around and we know where everything is because we can feel it. Having a LCD that can be programmed for whatever buttons to be used would be hard to discern where the buttons are on the screen since it would be smooth normally so some kind of tactile interface would be needed so any player could find said button on the screen.

Ofcourse there is also the cost and durability issues to contend with but hey! this is Nintendo, if they can't figure it out no one can .

TalkBack / RE:Final Fantasy I & II to GBA!
« on: April 09, 2004, 01:28:04 PM »
I already have Origins for PSone so there is no point in getting this. I never noticed any major load times in it as someone here said there were problems with it amongst other things. I found Origins to a be a PERFECT update to an already sweet game. I have only played through FF1 and not FF2 so I cannot say much on it, but playing through FF1 again this time in 16-bit style splender was the best $40cdn I ever spent.

I know it's a pipedream but seriously I would love to see FF1-9 (Origins, FF3j, Anthology, Chronicles, no chrono ofcourse and 7-9) be brought to the GC with faster/no loads times etc. etc. Now that could be one heck of a promotion!
