I'll be making a reaction video to ShyGuy's comment when he releases it. Don't forget to like this comment and subscribe to my channel for future posts and videos like this one.

I've already written an op-ed in response to Khushrenda's reaction video, among others, and why he and others like him miss the point.  It'll go live once his video posts.

I'm leading a break-off community of former Shyguy, Khush, and Nickmitch followers to provide a safe space for conversation in a non-toxic environment about the web, but all we ever post are memes about current web events that make light of serious issues and refer to 2008 as the "good old days" even though everyone hated the web then too.

This whole thing is just a bunch of blatant SJW propaganda anyways.

Modern WWW is more like a string than a web. I miss the geocities type sites.

Okay, HERE'S HOW IT IS TO VISIT A WEBSITE IN TWENTY NINTETEEN!

You get a link to some article or something from your email, from social media, from your news feed, from the forums.

The first stop, they detect your adblocker. Time to greenlight just this one page!

Second Stop they want to show you notifications. NOPE!

Third stop, they gotta tell you about them cookies. NWR has a nice small notification, but some websites take up half the page. What was interesting, is I went to some UK tabloid for an article (I think it was Express.co.uk) and they had a cookies pop up that listed the twelve sites to who they were selling information.

Fourth stop, if they're really a turd, is you get the autoplay videos! Everybody loves autoplay videos, especially if they are embedded at the bottom of the page and you have to scroll all the way down to mute them.

Fifth, you get the privilege of having the option to sign up for a newsletter! Let's spread this crap to you inbox!

Maybe now, you can get the information that you came for. But sometimes, once you start to click away, they will give you a parting shot!

And that's why the Internet should have stayed a hobby for nerds!

Have you forgotten those semi-transparent flash overlays that prevented you from clicking on sites. Planentgamecube had a dinosaur one that blocked the links to all the juicy E3 news. Apparently they died; good riddance.

The only thing missing is a publication you've never heard of saying you have 3 free articles left before you run out, but you can get 3 months for just $1, cancel anytime.

Don't forget the insistence that you let them access your location data (for a blog?) and the offer to "install" a shortcut on your phone as if an obscure news site deserved to appear as an app on your screen.

If you are sneaky, there are ways around it. You can inspect the elements via developer tools in Chrome and delete some of the parts blocking the screen to read an article if you know what you are doing and they didn't make the site very well. But typically I am lazy and will just tell google (when browsing news via google now) to never show articles from them again and move on with life. Oh, and I switched to Brave Browser, as it blocks most everything by default.

This is honestly, one of the less egregious monetisation strategy. It's just a dollar. What else were you going to spend it on? refined sugar?

But yeah using the web fucking sucks these days. I think I'm going back to my car radio for news now.

I've had some video sites set up so when you click the "skip ad" button on the video it just opens up a new window with some ad deal going on.

What sort of video sites would do that? 🤔

Sure, the dollar is a low introductory price, but it always goes up after the trial to $7-10/month.  My biggest issue is when it's not a site I've never heard of and can't say I plan on coming back to in the 3 months.

I'd honestly rather they just charge me like 15 cents to read the one article and I can just go about my day.

Also re-captcha is just obnoxious. Fucking hell.

Oh... yeah sorry I imagined that they were offering that last option. More websites need microtransactions instead of subscriptions.

Especially with how people browse the web.  I don't really go looking for articles to read, I get them from Twitter and the Digg newsletter almost entirely.  So I really have no need for a singular subscription.
