Lindemann Syndrome Anonymous (LSA): The Backlog Thread.
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:22:13 PM »
when i purchased animal crossing i also picked up a few other things such as cave story and  the oracle games.
i have barely touched any of them
additionally i still have some ambassador games left to complete....

the 3DS is turning into my downloadable backlog and that frightens me.

its nowhere near substantial enough to cause me to create a backloggery but still...

I can never find anything with that search.  In fact the only one I know that really could was Vudu and I think he cheated with Google somehow.  I'm not counting Megabyte because he has Database access.  If I had that it be a whole different story.

Did you really have to start this up less than three weeks from the next Steam sale?

Steam calculator's got me at $2,500.

Doesn't seem to want to bring up mine.  I'll have to try at home when I'm with Steam to make sure I have the right stuff.

I know. I never bothered with the Wii Virtual Console much since I basically owned the original physical copies of most of the stuff I'd want to play. There were a couple games I didn't have but most of the stuff I'd want to play was accounted for.

However, with the 3DS Virtual Console, there are a bunch of GB and GBC games I never played and have been buying. I tried to hold back from purchasing too many since I also had a bunch of ambassador games to get through and 3DS games as well. But when the Zelda GBC games were released, I figured I'd finally buy a bunch more VC games at the same time and get it done at once. So, I've still got 4 GBA ambassador games to get through, 4 3DS I've yet to start and I want to pick up Animal Crossing once I find it, and now 8 VC games not to mention Zelda Four Swords and a ton of DS games I've got backlogged. Plus, there are still other VC and E-Shop games I'd like to get and some 3DS titles soon to be released.

The 3DS games monsoon is upon us! There is no more drought.

At least for me.

starship defense
alphabounce(will likely always be there for me to mess with)
wario land 4(would like to give a second shot)

pushmo

given up on/lost interest
fire emblem: sacred stones(screw permadeath)
four swords(screw the heros trial thing)
3d classics kid icarus(you could have given us the option to be able to scroll down)

f-zero gba
mario kart super circuit

I own 21 digital retail 3DS games and 48 eShop games, as well as a dozen Wii U retail games, 8-10 eShop games and probably a dozen VC games across both platforms, and I've beaten virtually none of them. I'm starting to chip away at them, but it's going to take a while.

Games are supposed to be entertainment, what's the fun in forcing yourself to play more games?

Though i can definitely relate, cause i occasionally feel some pangs of guilt looking at my shelves with GC, GBA, Xbox, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U games. That's not counting digital sutff on Steam, and VC on Wii and Wii U and eShop stuff on 3DS and Wii U.

This is why I stopped bothering anticipating the Steam sales.  I have an obscene backlog between my steam profile and my console games, some which require a considerable time sink to make decent progress (Animal Crossing & Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, to be specific).

Choice and affordable gaming is a good problem to have, but I have much more finite time than I did when I was a teenager or in college that I get the feeling I'll simply never get around to playing all these games I already have.

I can't speak for pokepal, but for me it's that I've spent so much of my money on all these games, that it would be irresponsible to continue amassing games at the same frequency.

To me, I don't plan on finishing every game I purchased (on Steam, at least), but I intend on giving each game I have up to an hour to capture my interest.  If it doesn't by then, or I find the game not fun, then I would mark it as a bad purchase decision and move on.

its moreso otherwise you almost forget they exist(warioware)
when I was making my list I was basically asking myself how much I really want to complete some of these games... to be honest some of them I decided that I really don't care if I complete them or not (Zelda 2, fusion if we never get restore points, and warioland 4)....

if I get a game I make a conscious effort to at least play around 15 minutes of it,  these are games that I have decided I want to complete and see to the end because I enjoy them but with new releases I have to put them aside and sometimes forget about them

Oh God I don't even bother any more.  I no longer make any apologies for what I've done.

Yikes I'm not sure I could face my backlog like this head on... Would probably get overwhelmed once you start counting the amount of hours needed. I think I always buy more than I can actually play.

Are you trying to finish them all? Or just try out for a while? I noticed you had Affordable Space Adventures listed twice, so that's one less already! ;) Great game though, and not very long either. I'm also a big fan of that Pokémon TCG release for GBC, so if you're into cardgames at all I would recommend giving that a look.

Hahaha. I kid, I kid!

As long as you enjoy the collecting aspect, and are buying games that you do intend to play eventually, there is nothing wrong with a big backlog.  (In my opinion, at least.)

Note that I have nearly 450 unbeaten games in my collection right now, and that doesn't count anything in my Steam backlog since I have no viable way to even play those 100+ games. So I might be biased... but looking at and going through my huge shelf of Wii games is immensely satisfying for me, even if many sit unplayed so far.  I'll get to them eventually.

I like how Backloggery kind of calls you out for not updating your currently playing games list. Made me get back to Nano Assault and clear some stuff there.

Now a lot of the games on my backlog are short, bite sized mission based type deals on the 3DS so I want to clear some of those before I get locked away by Pokemon Sun and or Moon.

So, how did everyone do this weekend?

I have Liberation Maiden and Attack of Friday Monsters even though I've barely touched Weapon Shop De Omasse or Crimson Shroud and DKCR 3D even though, come to think about it, I barely touched Tropical Freeze, and I'm still only 20 hours in Pokemon so I won't likely get started on them anytime soon.

So, how did everyone do this weekend?

I'm really good at this.

Now you are getting into the spirit of things. I hadn't really planned on buying much this weekend but then I did. GameStop had a deal where if you buy a Toad, Yoshi or Bowser Wii Remote, then you could get a Wii U Select game for free with it. I already have all the Mario themed Wii Remotes except for Bowser which I had planned to pick up at some point in the future to complete the collection but had put off because it looked rather garish and was waiting to see if there would be a price drop. A free game seemed like a good enough offer to finally pick it up. I had hoped maybe I could get the NES Remix game but, of the Wii U Select titles they were offering, the only one I didn't already own was Zelda Wind Waker so I figured I'd grab it since free is free. Personally, Wind Waker is still my favorite Zelda title and I've played it through to completion about 4 times at least already and have one save file with the complete Figurine collection and all other possible side quests complete. But because I've played it so thoroughly, I'm not exactly looking to revisit it very soon when there are plenty of other Zelda titles I still have yet to play and been meaning to play like Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks. As for the Bowser Wii Remote, now that I can see the thing in real life, it is indeed quite garish. Such an odd choice to make for a Wii Remote. I'd have loved to have seen a Wario, Daisy and Waluigi themed Wii Remotes. The bright yellow, dark orange and deep purple would have worked nicely with the existing Mario, Luigi and Peach Wii Remotes than the way the Toad, Yoshi and Bowser Wii Remotes look compared to them. Yet, with the Switch possibly (likely) phasing out the Nintendo period of Wii Remotes, it looks like that possibility will remain a pipe dream.

However, it was on the secondhand market that I made most of my purchases acquiring Mario Party 4, Super Mario Strikers, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars 2 all for GameCube. This reduces my GameCube Desiderata down to 9 titles. 15 years later I'm still collecting titles for that bad boy.

Then, with Cyber Monday, I went for the deals on Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Star Fox Zero/Guard. I was hoping I might find a deal for Paper Mario Color Splash. I'm just finishing up Sticker Star and that game has been given a bad rap. I really liked it and now I really want to play Color Splash. (So much so that I'm really tempted to buy Color Splash at full price and forget waiting for a deal.) That means my current weekend shopping spree has brought me 4 Wii U games, 5 GameCube games and 1 Wii Remote.

I may not be done yet, either. I'm still contemplating Guitar Hero Live Wii U for about $40.00 and a few other used games I came across while checking out some video game stores. Plus, having put in my copy of Civilization 3 and playing that game again for the first time in years, I'm now interested in picking up a copy of the Complete Civilization 5 and catching back up on that series although it is a huge timesink. It's enjoyable but, man, I'm too much of a builder and always want to make these great empires on large maps which results in each turn taking a long time as I make improvements and build cities resulting in long games.

As it is, my last major gaming purchases were in April this year when I bought some games and Animal Crossing Amiibo. Since then, I've only bought Puzzles and Dragons 3DS and Yoshi's Woolly World Wii U when that dropped in price. So, having hardly bought any games for half the year, I have the funds to easily splurge on some titles now especially since I'm seeing some good enough deals for them. As I get closer to completing the wish lists I have for various systems, there aren't many titles left that I'm looking to buy so my game-spending seems to be decreasing year by year. In that regard, I'm kind of thankful the Wii U has been a bit of a bust with only a small amount of software I'm interested compared to past systems. It's made it much easier to catch up on past games while still staying quite current with today's software offerings. The Switch might change that but I may not jump on that system for a couple years with all I have to play still.

Maybe for 2017 we should turn this into a "reduce the backlog" thread instead? ;) Like let's all try to finish/at least play one game per month or whatever. Beating a backlog is obviously futile, but we can surely try?

Khushrenada -- you HAVE to try Fire Emblem Path of Radiance ASAP. I beat it many years ago and it's one of my absolute favourites on GameCube. Stellar game, just turn off the battle animations and make sure you get the Soren/Ike bromance going for great character development. Over here the game actually sells for more on the 2nd hand market than I ever bought it for now, and it's been REALLY tempting to cash those 80 dollars. But haven't been able to part with it yet - what if I wanna play it again?!

I'm too lazy to use Backloggery anymore, so I just keep a spreadsheet handy:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kv8Ka4BLwWbf8KC0WPAHVuACJNMsl-5hxDAdARSIgWg/edit?usp=sharing

Here's a list of games I've completed/currently playing:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bKjc4ChW2DFbkxg51kuU1hScoApfVJ9hWQGfX9sIEcI/edit?usp=sharing

I want to finish as many Wii U games as possible before the Switch arrives, but there's still a lot of good stuff I want to sink into on PS4. My Xbox is my Rare Replay machine, at least until Scalebound comes out.

In the past few months, I've been trying a bit more at this and been playing more regularly at games than I have for awhile. Recently, I made a list of 30 games of various games that I wanted  to play, beat and complete before the release of the Nintendo Switch as a sort of deadline/goal.

As I posted in my comment section on Backloggery, some of these games that I've been close to completing and just stopped playing. Some are classics I've never played before and it's time I finally dove into that experience. Some are just the next step in a series to keep me from falling further behind. The main thing is that whenever I look at my list of games, these titles call out to me and I want to end the clutter they cause in my mind as I look at my wall of games and see them sitting there and waiting.

To that end, I recently complete the Poe Soul sidequest in Twilight Princess GC and I just finished Paper Mario: Sticker Star last night. I've also beat Luigi's Mansion GC for the first time and am now playing through the Hidden Mansion quest to beat that and get an A Rank mansion and complete that game. I've also started Professor Layton and the Last Specter and am into Chapter 2 there. Thus, I'm making progress. Rather than having the daunting task of completing all my games, I'm finding making this short list is helping me so I don't feel overwhelmed by choices. They are still games I want to play so I don't feel like I'm forced to play them. Making short lists might help you too in that regard.

I now own 5 Fire Emblem games: Sacred Stones, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Shadow Dragon and Awakening. I have yet to play any of them. However, if I were to choose one to start with, it would probably be Awakening because I know it has the adjustable allowing me a chance to learn the mechanics and gameplay elements of a Fire Emblem game. However, Path of Radiance is the title I most want to play of the 5 I own. Maybe it's because of the amount of time it has taken me to finally purchase or maybe because of the $115.00 I had to plop down to get it. I remember thinking $80.00 dollars was a rather high asking price for the game years ago but now I wish I had bought it at that price even. C'est la vie. I was intrigued by the game years ago when I was reading about it Nintendo Power so it is the Fire Emblem game that has always been in the back of my mind when I think of the series.

However, like I just mentioned, I've got a shortlist of games I'm currently sticking to playing through first. Thus, I'm afraid I'm not going to be playing the game ASAP just yet. But, with the way things are going, I can see myself making another short list after I finish this one and there's a strong possibility FE:PoR will make that one. I am curious to see why Soren choose that character as his namesake on these forums, for one. For that matter, I should probable add Skies of Arcadia Legends to my next shortlist and start playing all my expensive GC games. But that is a concern I don't need to worry about for some time.

Nice! That one must have brought a pretty penny.

Well holy mop, that's a lotta green! And red. Or maybe a yellow.

I wish I had broader tastes back then because I remember passing up the game on the shelf way back when for $20, because it wasn't a good seller. I didn't think I would like it (and at that time, I may have been right). I sure hope there's a GCN VC on Switch, yet another broken promise for Wii U.

Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars 2 all for GameCube.
Why not get the Complete Saga version for Wii (or other systems)?

Probably a better system for reducing the backlog clutter yes! Skies of Arcadia Legends is also on my list still, along with that other giant GameCube RPG - Tales of Symphonia. Knowing the amount of hours they will probably take however, I constantly put them off. I've still got some miscellaneous stuff for that system left to go through, like Billy Hatcher, Geist, Lost Kingdoms 2 and Odama.

None of those will light the world on fire (well, Odama might), but they're sure going to be shorter than those two giant RPGs. Think I might copy your approach and focus on the stuff I'm truly excited about it, rather than trying to whittle down the volume first.

Anyone else pepper in short games in between longer games just to have a sense of progress/accomplishment? In the time it's taking me to beat Tokyo Mirage Sessions I've already started and beat 5 other games, and I'm in the process of completing two more.

That being said, I don't want to feel like I have too much on my plate. Right now I have around 7 games on rotation between all systems.

I do a little bit of that. I know with the short list I've got, there are 4 DS RPG's I've listed. I'm probably not going to play one RPG after another. I'll want to break things up there a bit. In that case, I've also listed Kirby's Dream Collection. I could play through one of those classic Kirby games as a break before moving on to something else.

In a most recent case, I was playing through Sticker Star but took a break by continuing on with Luigi's Mansion GC since I knew it was supposed to be a short-ish game. I played that for a couple nights and made progress on it. Then started alternating between it and Sticker Star. It was interesting when I got to the Enigmansion level in Sticker Star since it seemed to have some similarities to Luigi's Mansion. Gaming synergy! Eventually, I got to a point where I beat Luigi's Mansion and have now let it sit for awhile while finishing Sticker Star and then starting up Professor Layton 4. I'm not good at game juggling.

I find it hard to divvy up games and play times and have generally found it best to just stick playing through one game so I can remember everything I've been learning about it. With Sticker Star, after a week or so of not playing it and then playing Luigi's Mansion as well as some Civ3, I forgot a couple things I should have remembered from before and was stuck on a level that I finally had to use a FAQ for the only time I played it to see what I was doing wrong. At first, I was upset with the game but then I later thought about it and realized I had already seen this particular point in action and should have known what it meant from before. I had just forgotten it and misremembered its meaning. Thus, I try not to play too much in between so as to not lose focus or forget things. I'd rather stick with playing one long game through to the end and then playing a short game or two after on their own instead of while I'm playing the long game at the same time. It just doesn't seem to work for me. Playing something new may become more interesting and then I stop playing the long game I was working on. That's what happened with me Xenoblade Chronicles X. Months later, I popped it in to show off the game to a friend and I had a hard time remembering the controls and relearning them a bit. I'm going to have to start re-reading that manual and re-learning some locations and things again when I finally jump back into that game.

I don't complete games in a high volume, but I definitely try to fit a shorter palate cleanser in between the big RPGs and adventure games. I don't put in enough hours to play too many things at once because I'll lose my way.

I also have a problem if I let RPGs sit too long. Last spring I completed FE:A without doing much research. I realized after the fact how much content I missed by not shipping more of my characters sooner. I played through a second time close to the point where I unlocked all the children but needed to take a break. I tried going back a few weeks ago and had forgotten what my build strategy was or how to queue heritable powers. Rather than figure all that out again I just decided to put FE:A to bed knowing how many hours of Fates I have waiting for me.

At this point I'm just trying to focus on the games I most want to get through before I purchase a Switch.

Yeah agreed that RPGs are difficult to return to sometimes, although Tokyo Mirage is fairly forgiving in that regard since you can reread what you're meant to do on the gamepad.

For me it's easiest to juggle one game per system (let's say 1 Wii U disc and 1 digital game, plus something on PC and/or on a second console hooked up). Really helps too if only one or two of them are storyheavy. Sure it's not like most videogame narratives are exactly James Joyce, but it's still to just forget what you're meant to aim for next sometimes.

Therefore my ideal set-up is to have an RPG or a long/storyheavy game going as sort of the 'main' game. And then I play a simple platformer or racing game alongside this. Imagine a sim or sportsgame or online shooter or something could fill that same role; something you already know how to play and can play in short bursts and then leave alone again with ease.

64 games played total in 2016. 45 of them finished in one way or another. Down from the 80 games I played in 2015, but I owe that to the ungodly hours I spent on all Fire Emblem related games this year, plus the over 150 hours I pulled on Overwatch. I churned through more 30 hour + games this year, and that's not even counting the final chapter I have to play to finish Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Gaming was pretty good this year.

With a Switch preorder in the bag, I have begun The Great Wii U Purge, aka everything on my Wii U must be beaten before I move on.

This is a very unrealistic expectation, as I have more than a few meaty games on there, but I feel pretty confident that I'll finish off my full retail and eShop games before I make the Switch. Games currently unbeaten on my Wii U:

Virtual Console:
Earthbound (Roughly 75% complete)
A Link to the Past (Not started)
Super Metroid (90% complete)
Advance Wars (2% complete)
Mega Man X (Garbage, remaining incomplete)
Kirby's Dream Land 3 (5% complete)
Golden Sun (5% complete)
Mega Man Battle Network 2 (55% complete)
Metroid Prime Trilogy (Prime- 90% Echoes-35%)

eShop Games:
The Swindle (Not started)
Elliot Quest (90% complete, could go straight for neutral ending)
UNEpic (65% complete, **** the Great Neuron)
Affordable Space Adventures (80% complete)
Runner 2 (35% complete)
Trine 2 (No idea, but not too worried about it)
Stealth Inc 2 (30% complete)
Citizens of Earth (Not started)
Swords and Soldiers II (Not started)
Runbow (Not started, likely remaining incomplete)

You might think that's bad, but I've got 27 other eShop games I've beaten on there, in addition to 10 digital retail games. Whoo!

I'm planning to pick up the SNK arcade classics collection on Wii. It will get me 16 Neo Geo games at a nice price and if I find something I like (for example the first Metal Slug game I suspect will a hit with me) I can get collections of several of SNK's more long running series' like Metal Slug or King of Fighters if I end up craving more.

This is going to do wonders for my backlog.

Lol, out of curiosity what series do you have the most unplayed entries of? I think for me it might be Donkey Kong: got the Wii game, DK Jungle Beat, and Tropical Freeze - all of which I've tried just once and finished only a few levels of so far. Well and the Civ bundle I got yesterday, that's also 3 games with a bunch of expansions.

Oh and I've got several Platinum Games titles in the backlog, but I guess those aren't really a series (Madworld, Viewtiful Joe 2, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101). Consumerism is so ridiculous haha.

All of this has still cost me less than buying a Switch. Normally, I wouldn't have bought so much at one time but the Gamestop equivalent of Canada has had a special sale going on since March 3 that is running until April 2 which is that if you buy 2 used games then you get the 3rd one free. Used games are cheaper than brand new copies plus if you have a high enough membership card, you can get a bit more of the price. If I take the price of 2 games and divide it over the three, it makes for a price point I would gladly take if they were sold at that cost individually. The highest price labelled for the games (and majority labelled price for the games) I bought is $35.99. 2 games at that price with tax is just over $80 but when I take that total and divide it over 3 games, that comes to about $26.87 with tax per game which is about 50% off the normal price as most of these games are retailing at $49.99 CAD and that's before tax. The only thing is that I have to buy a bunch of games at once to take advantage of the price compared to if it was just a 50% off sale for one or two titles. However, having not really purchased a lot of games the past couple years because of the rising price of games, (3DS games used to sell around the $35.00 mark with some games $5.00 above or below that depending on the title) I'd held off on buying stuff until a found a price point I was happy with. Being able to now reach this price point, I've begun taking advantage of it. It's probably helped that with the launch of the Switch, some people have traded in newer games or at least good copies of them so that I've been able to pick up some of the newer released titles at a good price.

Ironically, the one 3DS game I probably most want has been one I've yet to see used anywhere despite checking 7 EBGames stores in my local and surrounding area and that is Kirby: Planet Robobot. I'm also ticked I missed Best Buy's discount of Paper Jam for $14.97 which is a killer good price. Likewise, there have been no copies of Paper Jam for me to pick up in this deal yet either.

Anyways, thought I'd bring this up in case others have the means to take advantage of it as I think it is worth it. The only problem can be when you can find 2 games you want but can't really find a 3rd. I wasn't really interested in Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins and only picked it up because the store I was in couldn't find the copy of Mario and Sonic at the 2014 Sochi Olympics despite having the case on the shelf. It was the only thing priced right with the other games I was buying and that I thought might have been ok reviewed (it did become a Nintendo select title) to purchase aside from getting something I already owned and trying to sell off the extra copy later. At this point, my last dream find would be a store that has Planet Robobot, Paper Jam and Story of Seasons although I'd be willing to consider Mario Party: Star Rush, some other Harvest Moon titles, Hatsune Miku Project, or even remakes like Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World.

At this point, for the Wii U, I think the only titles I'm still looking to buy are:

Ducktales Remastered
Pokken Tournament
Super Mario Maker
(depends on price because I still wonder how long online services will last and then one can no longer play other people's creations)

The following are games I'd be open to buying but not worried if it doesn't happen since I clearly have more than enough to play from these recent purchases:

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics 2014 and/or 2016 (Haven't played any of the M&SatO games but Phil and I think Mop it up seem to be fairly positive about them so I'd be willing to give them a try)

Twilight Princess HD (my initial thought was pass on this title since I have the GC version and I just didn't see myself ever revisiting this game but BotW has me re-energized in Zelda that I'm now curious to try this again with a game in the height of the old style of dungeon and Zelda design but I still might pass since I've got the GC version to replay if I need to)

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (ShyGuy seemed impressed by it back in the day if I recall. Can't say it interests me too much but it look nice and it's a different type of game than I normally play)

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (why not? I hear it's only medicore and not outright terrible like other Sonic games. As well, I hear and think it doesn't take long to beat so I may not have to make it sit long in my backlog. Sometimes it's nice to have a simple game to quickly complete.)

Sonic All-Star Racing (I hear it's actually good and was the Kart racing game of choice before MK8 took over that title as expected.)

Lego Batman 3 (I bought the 2nd one of Wii U because it was under $10 despite not owning the first. Haven't played it to know what the quality is like but it's almost at the same price point being around $13.00)

Epic Mickey 2 (I know this didn't get good reviews when it came out at the start of the Wii U's life span and the Epic Mickey franchise since died after 2 middling games but part of me is still intrigued by the property to pick it up anyways at a low cost despite not playing the first)

Splatoon (That's right. Lumped with all these other games is Splatoon. I really don't play Shooter/combat type games that this is styled off of nor am I much of an online gamer. With those 2 factors along with the fact that the single player mode is relatively short means I'm unsure I'd really like this title. And with Splatoon 2 soon releasing on Switch, it could be the more Splatoon players carry on playing it there making the Wii U version and online crowd more obsolete. Probably not going to happen at this point)

If anyone wants to chime in on whether something is worth buying or skipping on these Wii U titles, I'm open to hearing about it.

I think you should stop spending so much on videogames :D ;D
Yeah, that's not happening anytime soon. Any other suggestions?

I got Severed (Wii U/3DS Crossbuy) Pandora's Tower, the two Dillon's Rolling Western games, and Another World (Wii U) through sales and Mynintendo discounts.
Man even Mynintendo is against me.

So I've owned a Switch for like two months and I already have 16 games on there for the backlog.

Oh the horror.

Physical or digital?  I only have 3 physical games for switch (Zelda, Mario, Mariokart 8, but I've bought a lot of digital games, including Splatoon.

I'm probably going to get a PS Vita now to deal with the backlog of games I have on the PS3 that have crossplay. If only sony had gotten to me sooner.

I was happy to see you were back.
Your numbers look pretty bad (82.6% unfinished :o), but have you updated with everything you finished in the past few years?
