I remember discussing the price cut issue with couchmonkey (where is that guy?) years ago and he was arguing that if Nintendo ever regained the top spot they would basically stop "Player's Choice" budget games. I argued long and hard about how that would never happen and it was bad business sense.

I guess he was right.

I think ShyGuy did it for first-person games and adventure games on the DS.

By the way, what about Cursed Mountain?

I don't think Galaxy made people point out flaws from 64. If anything that happened with Sunshine, or even before. We all knew that Mario 64 wasn't perfect by any means, but I think two things come into play here.

1) Nostalgia. It was the first 64 game (and 3D Mario) all of us played and I'll never forget the way it completely swept me off my feet.

2) The accomplishment of the game at the time. The first ever fully 3D game controlled by the analogue stick.. and yet it was executed so damn well that it still holds up today. I still have no idea how Miyamoto pulled it off.

So while Galaxy is definitely more technically sound and polished than 64, it's nowhere near as groundbreaking or fresh. And I think that's what Mario 64 will be remembered for.

On a side note, this is one of the reasons the Mario platformer series is my favourite. Nearly every game is a timeless classic in the true sense of the word. The graphics, gameplay and presentation of, say, SMB3 can still be appreciated as gaming excellence so many years after it has been released. To me, that's the mark of a generational game. It's similar to movies - somehow 2001: A Space Odyssey has aged incredibly and would be considered amazing by today's standards.

Zack & Wiki 2 and anything involving swordplay.

I hope you're joking.  The swordplay in the original was easily the weakest part of the game.  I had to replay the last level (or maybe it was the second-to-last) like ten flipping times because I could never get the sword controls to work.

AND, vudu. AND.

Who says FLUDD didn't work out?

Simpsons still has some great episodes now and then. Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind is incredible, and it was out only last year.

Granted, I'm not a geologist, but shouldn't there be waves created by such an eruption? I was scared for the people there just watching the footage, but they seemed pretty indifferent.

Even in TP, differentiating Link's horizontal and vertical swings very often didn't work.

What? You couldn't differentiate them in TP - they basically replaced the B button with a remote swing. You have to use the analogue stick to control whether it's vertical or horizontal.

Wow, these are hands down the most apathetic reactions I've ever seen to the revealing of a new Zelda.

Most of the games on the VC which were released on Nintendo systems are ones which either I already own in physical form or are planning to buy. Many of them actually don't cost much more than their VC prices, and some are even less. The only VC game I considered purchasing was Kirby's Dreamland 3 because of how difficult it is to find, especially for a good price.

What about Sin & Punishment? Or Super Mario RPG? I'm sure there are more examples of rare games released on the VC which are much more expensive elsewhere.

Wow this game seems to be getting lots of praise. I'm not generally a fan of GTA games but I'm considering it.. anyone played it yet?

Pi,min 2 was GOTY by far. It took Pikmin to a whole new level and is the true definition of what a sequel should be. Metroid Prime 2 was great but it was more of the same, and not as magical as the first entry.

For some weird reason Pikmin 2 failed to truly captivate me. It should have because its by far the best game in the whole series.

You make it seem like there are more than two games in the series ;)

1. How'd they forget a block button? :p luckily the game starts simple so you don't need it but sometimes I wish I could block at least a few of those damn Bulls hits!

Block buttons in brawlers are like break buttons in racing games--if you use them you're not playing the game right.

QFT.

Is this game really getting negativity around here?  It's like a more inappropriate, more polished No More Heroes. HOW IS THIS BAD?

You should ask IceCold.

Seriously, all the NMH comparisons are scaring me. I'll probably rent this first.

Sunshine has had its fair share of bashing on these boards.. but yeah, definitely undeserving of it.
Also, three of my nine favourite GameCube games (MP, ED, Sunshine) came out this year, so it was a great year overall.

2001: SSBM (1st tier)

2002: MP (3rd tier), ED (2nd tier), Sunshine (2nd tier)

2003: F-Zero (1st tier), Wind Waker (3rd tier)

2004: Pikmin 2 (1st tier)

2005: Jungle Beat (2nd tier), RE4 (3rd tier)

So yeah, I guess 2002 should be my favourite year in the Cube era. Though 2003 wins it by default because of F-Zero.

Caliban, how do you reload when you're playing Overkill? The A button doesn't seem to be in reach when you use the gun.
