200+ xbox games compatable with 360
« on: November 12, 2005, 11:43:50 PM »
And here's the list.

ALL games will be upscaled to hi-def.

Color me mildly impressed. (Still no match for rev's uber backwards compatability, though).

You'll have to purchase a software emulator.  Still nice that the option is there.  That way if you so desire you can pay about 450 bucks to play the games that you already have as well as your new 60 dollar games.

That's less than half and apparently omits most popular japanese as well as some popular western titles.

That's the first time I heard about having to purchase it, probably just an option for those that can't download it.

Quote: "Note: A software emulator is required for each original Xbox game you play on your Xbox 360™ console. Please check back for more details as we approach the launch date."

I just made the (logical) assumption that if they are informing you that a software emulator is required you'd have to buy it.  Maybe the software will be included on just in the monster version and not the core version?  But for a company that made users buy a controller to access dvd playback, i'd bet money that the consumer will be paying on top of the console's cost.

EDIT:  oh for each game.  Yeah it has too be a downloadable.  So it will likely be included in the Live service.

It's like when I was converting some old VHS home videos to DVD.... some people would play it on high def setups and wondered why it still looked like VHS.... expecting miracles or some such thing.

Edit: Also, the addition of more games IMO will be proportional to how well the 360 does before the release of the other consoles to the market.  If it does well you can expect a heavy decline in support for this feature.

From what I read, at another site there are three ways to get the emulation stuff, 1) download it over live, 2) download it on your pc, burn to a cd and install on xbox360, or 3) for a nominal price order the updates and have them mailed to you.

Don't forget this list will get bigger as time goes on. DOA Ulitmate and DOAX(guilty pleasure) are noticeably absent, whereas Ninja Gaiden/NG Black are on there, and as stevey mentioned briefly, the Sega exclusives (though don't forget Shenmue II and Ootgi 1 and 2...), aren't there either.

Hopefully future games will play with no problems. It would suck to have a game that's 'playable, with some glitches.'

So far the exception to this rule is MS's bread and butter Halo franchise. They'll be bumped up to 720p. Will other Microsoft published games follow suit?

Aren't DOA dependent on the Xb harddive?

Um, no. VHS is a 2d image, most games these days are composed of 3d objects. A 3d object can be rendered in higher resolution without any problems. A 2d image would need upscaling. A 2d image has no additional information a higher resolution could reveal, a 3d model does.

So is Halo. The emulator will require a harddrive.

Perhaps they're delaying support for games that will have sequels or competitors released at or near launch, wouldn't be unusual for MS to act like that. DOA 3 will be made obsolete by DOA 4 so they're making sure the old one cannot remain in use.

Some clarifying quotes for you guys, straight from the horse's mouth:

Quote

Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox.

Quote

Xbox.com: Do I need a hard drive for backward compatibility?

Todd: Yes. Xbox 360 comes standard with a 20GB hard drive accessory which will enable gamers to play original Xbox games. Those who choose to buy an Xbox 360 Core System will want to purchase a hard drive if backward compatibility is something they want at a later date.

Xbox.com: Why do I need the hard drive for backward compatibility?

Todd: It's basically due to differences in the architecture. For backward compatibility, we have to recreate the procedures and functions of Xbox using stored data on the hard drive.

Quote

Xbox.com: How will you deliver the emulators for backward compatibility?

Todd: There are several different ways that you can get them:

For Xbox Live members (either Gold or Silver members), just connect your Xbox 360 console to Xbox Live and insert an original Xbox game. The system will automatically check if you have the latest emulation software, download it to your Xbox 360 console as part of a system update if you don't, reboot, and start loading your original Xbox game.

Those who are not part of our Xbox Live network will be able to download the emulators from Xbox.com, and burn them onto a CD to insert into your Xbox 360 where it will auto-install the emulator. Or you can go to Xbox.com and simply sign up for a CD to be sent to your home for a nominal shipping and handling fee.

Quote

Xbox.com: Are there any emulators already pre-loaded on the hard drive?

Todd: An early version of the emulator that supports Halo®: Combat Evolved and Halo® 2 offline is included on Xbox 360 Hard Drives right out of the box as a special bonus to devoted fans of the franchise. However, to play Halo 2 online, or to play any other titles on the launch list, the full emulator update is required.

I think the initial list of games is lacking a lot of games I'd be interested in (Conker, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio) but I gather MS will add those at a later date.  Overall, it's not really up to par with the backwards compatibility I think we'll be able to expect from Sony or Nintendo, but I think Microsoft deserves some applause for putting in the effort.  Backwards compatibility seems to be becoming a really big deal to a lot of people, I personally don't care about it that much.
That's my opinion, not yours.

They're missing a lot of very popular games.  None of the Splinter Cell games made the list.  Neither did the two KOTOR games.  Plus there's no Madden.  I wonder if EA doesn't want Madden to be backwards compatable so you have to buy the new version.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Well I was trying to make a point not a 1:1 technical comparison.

I often find that I stink at these technical metaphors, but I'll try another... I can take a 3D, Playstation One game and render it from source in HD.  You will no doubt have a cleaner picture, but it's not going to improve enough to look like a generation difference in visuals.

Even that comparison is somewhat moot though, as this isn't exactly like PS1 games to PS2 games.... some xbox games already ran in true HD to begin with.

Bottom line is that Microsoft has a bit of flexibility with their solution to backwards compatibility.  They had to work for it though, so I guess they get some points there.  Micro-payments take them right back though .

(BTW, I think emulation is not the best word to characterize what exactly they're doing on a technical level, but it's likely the best word to throw out to the general public.  This is not your Mame, SNES, Bleem, style of emulation....)

Check under Star Wars!

Overall, I am surprised, the list as has been mentioned is incomplete but the fact that the emulators are free in this age of mircotransactions is reassuring. Pretty good effort!

Unless every single Xbox game supported 720p, from the get-go, I can't imagine all games being bumped up.  If Xbox games are similiar to the PC where you can bump the resolutions at will I'll stand corrected. They've made Halo and Halo 2 sound special with its 720p features, so I'm safely assuming that not all games will get that sort of special treatment.

Dunno, a guy who claims to be a MS engineer told me they're using a form of emulation. Perhaps it's a modified VirtualPC?`Could be recompiles, could be some form of virtual machine.
