Nintendo Gaming / RE:"Knowing" what we "know" now; thoughts?
« on: January 16, 2006, 06:27:10 AM »
I would like to mention to everyone.  That a WoW subscription, most magazine subscription, large newspaper subscriptions, and most MMORPG's in general cost more then $14.99 a month and don't get you near the variety of play.  That is not an unreasonable price for all you can play in a month.  Even if all the games where 3 dollars if you played 7 unique games a month then you do better with the subscription.  It wouldn't be for everyone.  Some would rather forego that and just buy all there games straight.  But for the people who rent and play right now.  That would probably be the way to go.  As long as it's on a per month basis.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Next Gen. Dreamcast
« on: January 15, 2006, 07:52:41 AM »
In the SNES days:

Sega was to Nintendo as Apple was to PC's

This generation, you'll like this it's ironic:

Nintendo is to the rest of the game industry as Apple is to the rest of the computer industry

This one is even better but I'll have to check you computer information badge here.

If we think of it like OSs:

Sega's Dreamcast is to Consoles as BeOS was to Computers.

Got to love parallels and associations.  Interpret this as you may but those are my thoughts about as concise as you can possible be.

I do have to say that if the Micro was priced like the SP and my current Orignal GBA, we're talking launch here, died.  Then I get a Micro.  When the cover on it is right it feels like the Original GBA.  Which is much nicer than the SP.  The Clamshell design and the Backlight are the only things going for the SP.  But then I have a DS but I find that it is a little akward and uncomfortable for different things.  I think little tweaking of the button arrangement and the rounding of the sharpers parts would be nice.

Just to clear a little up.  It thinks we generally have established as being true.  So anyplace we don't have hard confirmed information, like graphic capability, then assume the next best things.  Same as current or what is general beleived here on the board.  Now I know I didn't get everything in that monster of a list up there.  For that I am sorry.

Now on another note.  Thinking back to earlier discussions if it is true about how it seems most of you can finish games in a rental period.  Then the $14.99 a month unlimited gaming would be a real bargain for you.  Everynight come home and beat a new game.  As mentioned before $19.99 is to much to pay for a 2 generation old game.  You can but a game this generation for that price.  At least one that doesn't have any collector value, like having a mint condition copy of LoZ:LttP.

Though you know, being the cynic that I am, I'm half way worried the next announcement will be that it has and Ext. port. :-P

I wanted to get this up before the next big announcement was made.  Think of this like when we were speculating about the controller.  If we lock down the things that we beleive to be true as of 1/14/05 and all the good and the bad are true.

What this means is that with all indications from that survey.  The VC will have games to rent and games for buying.  The buying price is $19.99 for N64 games straight and I believe it was $2.99 for Nintendo games or play any game for $14.99 a month.

The controller as is with no secret feature or additional add-ons besides the Shell, Nunchuku, and the controller itself.  Gamecube accesories, due to the backward compatibility, are admissible. (Meaning Microphone, Bango, and Dance pads.)

Rev has wi-fi capability.

2-3 times the graphics power of the Cube.

For simplicity sake we'll assume due to the backward compatibility that the Rev can hook up to a TV and sound system in any fashion as the Gamecube. (This means s-video, component, composite, rf, and to a monitor with an adapter box, (Yes you can hook a GCN all those ways.  I have all the cords to do it.), and on the sound side RCA cables).  That also means a max of 480p.

This will also mean that Hideous menu interface from the survey.

As for Media it has been said that the Revolution will be able to do the DVD thing so we'll assume GCN discs and plain vanilla DVD storage (4.5 gigs).  No variants.  They might come in with a DVD that holds 10 gigs but for this we're locking down what is confirmed and all things that aren't given some references in size assuming the smallest.

As for the internal flash memory it's been said it is suppose to be 512mb.  It's up to you whether the drive is able to be used by the user.  I personally beleive that that drive will only be available to Nintendo and Developers.  Also, because it hasn't been mentioned, assuming since it's internal that it will not be able to be upgraded.

Saving can be done through the GCN memory cards, backward compatibility again, or through the flash card memory slots.  Which for this can be any size you can afford and used for anything you want within reason.  That being said since it hasn't been confirmed or denied you may choice to assume that Nintendo will be following an SD standard and therefore allowing accesories to be added using those slots as well, like on a PDA.

DS Conncectivity.

Same type of Ram as the Gamecube.

There will be launch titles.  Some will be from third parties and rumor has it that SSBO is going to one of the first party ones.  This is sort of a sticky part for the spirit of this post.  There are no truely confirmed games.  There confirmed that there will be games.  But none are confirmed.  I personally would like to stay away from "If it launched with Star Fox Revolution it would r0x0r.  They sell like a billion and it would kick     "  Though it might be unavoidable.  I like to keep the brand names out of this. (Except for SSBO becaues at least it's slightly confirmed and anything that is on the past systems because they have, through interpretation, been confirmed in a way.  At least all the GCN games.)  Now genre you beleive would make the launch strong and the like would be constructive.  I mean the new IP has been confirmed.

Rumor has it Nintendo may already be starting production.  So I will be happy to make the assumption that there will be no immediate shortages at launch.  Nintendo's pretty good about not bungling the number of needed launch systems.

The system will be the size of three stacked up DVD cases.  I know Nintendo stated that it will only be getting smaller at the last e3 but they haven't updated the sizing specs so were going with those.

I'll leave it to you discretion whether the motion sensor bars are long bars that stretch to you tv or just sensors you put at the edges.

If the video is any indication the system itself will be able to be turned on and off vy the remote.  You may use that if you like.

That all being said, and it's a post full, I personally beleive, that even with these Stats, that I will get a Revolution at launch.  My GCN has seen better days and I like to play Battalion wars, something it won't do now.  Looking back over this though it would be an underwhelming launch.  It be like going to the store and there it was with all the games.  "Wow, when did that launch."

So everyone have fun.  I hope you at least find this somewhat interesting.

Did you guys read the IGN article about this they have some prices and there ridiculus when you compare them to what we've been talking about on the forums.  If that's the prices then this will be a flop more then likely.  I luxury services like fine wines and cheeses.

Just to clear something up that was a while back.  It's already been stated that the Revolution will be using all the same API's as the Gamecube and rumor has it it will also use teh same assembly.  So GCN is not emulated it is just ran.  Now on the topic of SSBM  that game already has a surprising amount of hooks.  You can get trophies in the game now for games that weren't a glimmer in Nintendos eyes at the time.  If any game would have a hook to let you change something in it's gameplay that would be my bet.

Ok this is my peice and then I'm stepping out.  I am one of the few people who is lucky enough to have scrouged the cash and had the planetary discount alignments enable them to have an HDTV, all be it not a very big one, and the Progressive Scan cables for the Gamecube.  Even for non-progressive scan games the picture is so much clearer it's not even funny.  It's like night and day.  Theres just a better transfer of data.  I am now co-oping and I had to leave my HDTV with my fiance and had gone back to a SDTV, I think that's the right term, playing Baten Kaitos I'm now having a hard time reading the text.  It's an average sized standard TV.  It just seems so fuzzy and not as vibrant.  I've adjusted it to its optimum.  In the end there are reasons to upgrade and the like.  Even without new better formats for things that have adjustable medias they can take advantage of the change right out of the box.  This is my experienc.  When the Revolution comes out I could care less if it has the capability to do 720 or 1080p.  As long is it lets me connect it to my HDTV with those better cords everything will be fine.

It's like Japan and America.  A lot of technology we thought of first and even implemented it first.  But the Japanese re-did it, made it public, marketted better, etc.  Ah the fun in parallels.

Dude.  I remember reading some reviews of that game and how one of the effects that happened was the Gamecube would look like it restarted when you were no where near a save point.  I wanted that game until I was playing it at a store and couldn't get pass one area at the very beginning after covering all the ground and everythin.  Decided that it had to something either stupid or glitchy and never got that tainted feeling away enough to get the game.

I liked Blast Corp as well.  It was the first title I bought for my N64 but I have to agree with Spak-Spang.  Some levels even involved tricks to find the hidden machine that would actually let you complete the level.  Doesn't mean I won't get it if the price is right.

I'm curious about that as well.  Not curious to drive to Nashville right this moment and try it but curious none the less.  How does it change?  Is it like the alternate Gamecube start theme.  (If you haven't heard it, I get a kick out of it, hold down z when you start you cube.)

I really enjoy the Gamecube menu.  It served it's function, kept the whole cube theme, and had an analog clock in the background to boot.

You know doesn't the show sound like a great place to release some information?  As of yet though there has been nothing.  At the very least show the "concept" controller and system to the "public" get some more press coverage.  Have the demo video playing in the background.  Could have reached a lot of non-traditional gamers becaues they show that type of stuff on morning shows and HGTV.  But then how could they compete with the toilet that can give you your complete health status and is heated.

Good points all.  But like any industry wants it becomes "tame" and not trying to prove itself quality tends to go down.  Like old CD-Rom drives will for the most part read any format you give them, old or new, and are neigh indestructible.  Only thing that get those are old age.  New ones are cheap and you can tell that no one spent the time to do all the nit-picky stuff like when it was an emerging technology.  Unless games start fighting for there lives again or there is another dedicated video game company that can't settle into the current model I don't think we'll see any of that.

*shrug*  Film is an analog medium and inheritantly going to have a better resolution than a digital medium.  It's just how things are.  You'll get no argument from me.  But as general joe the consumer I'll notice that big old black spot of an artifact on a movie screen.  I guess in the end it comes down to this.  If you can see a movie on a good quality projector with a good quality copy then movies can easily win.  If not DVD's tend to be a little more consistant.

Ok... Just for the record HD-DVD is the extension of the DVD standard.  If you don't mind not having any extras you can get a Superbit DVD, the cases tend to have this Stainless still print on them, where they take that extra space and use it to better encode the movie with higher quality everything.  I just like to mention at this point that picture wise most DVD's are already better than what you see at the movies themselves, no real artifacts.  Yeah, like HDTV broadcast, IPv6, and DVD data disc for computers it will take a while to catch on.  Though I'll probably get one with my next TV in like 6 years.  Oh wait Holographic media is suppose to final come by then.  Then it will terabytes.  The actual raw film itself.

More variation the better.  My favorite N64 controller was a boomerange shape one.  Even if Nintendo went and said that yeah you can't do that.  It's how they make money so they'll do what Compaq did and go into a white room with a Revolution and figure out how it works.  As long as they didn't actually take a controller apart and reverse engineer that way it's perfectly legal if they just happen to find a way to mimic all the functions.  That's what happened the x86 architecture.

As I've told many people.  People love new technology.  They just hate migrating to it.  That what holds back the PC more then anything.  The x86 architecture is relatively not nice to program for with todays advancements it keeps getting extended and when Intel finally made plans to give it the boot AMD extends it again and makes it impossible for the most part.  Finish later

Let's face it.  That was a long read. But besides that Game Console releases and tech releases in general aren't interesting for what people consider "non-gamers".  That being said the release is for the gamers.  The marketing is for the non.  I have more to say but later.

I like to say that, being much like Ian it seems, bringing up points sometimes is more for the discussion then anything else.  On that note.  I was hoping someone else would have caught this but no one did.

Anyone remember the launch of the PS2?  It was a time when DVD players could be consider expensive.  In fact it is only relatively recently that you could buy a good DVD player that did Progressive scan straight for aoubt 30 bucks.  The PS2 was a "cheap" dvd player and hey it could also play games.  Well isn't that sweet.

Now does anyone here think that it's a pretty interesting coincident that Sony is releasing a new format with it's PS3 on the way.  They did it in a way for th PSX, but more so for the PS2 and the PSP.  As of now it is rumored that the PS3 will be able to do DVD's, HD-DVD, BluRay, and CD's.  Now if they have full backward support then I can guarantee it will have everyone of those but maybe HD-DVD and it might have a UMD attachment to boot.  That's not even mentioning how easy it might be to give it streaming ability.

So looking at it like that something that can play all those formats and in HD for around $600 wow thats a deal.  Considering right now it costs $1000 dollars to get a HD-DVD player.  Now you tell me that it has a large back catalog of games and new ones coming out be name brand developers. Woah...

That will get Sony market shares.  That right there.  As you can see even with the high price it has market appeal.  If you could fit TiVo in it somehow you might not even need a anything else but a TV and a receiver.  Ironically enough that will hit the non-gamer market.  That's a lot of "value" for 600 bucks.  That is until the players go down to $100 or less but by then they'll be in the lead because of there cheap movie boxes.

I can see it now, "This Blu-Ray movie has been PS3 enhanced"
