TalkBack / Re: Baseless Speculation: Wii U's Last Stand
« on: August 10, 2015, 02:12:04 PM »

Ian Sane is right. It's really too late to turn the ship around. I was thinking of what might be good for Nintendo, and all that's coming to mind is what everyone already knows deep down: Metroid Prime 4, Super Metroid 2, a new Earthbound sequel, Mario RPG 2, Legend of Zelda: Skyrim Princess, F-Zero UX, Mario 62-2, Rogue Squadron, Star Tropics... POKEMON!??? All Nintendo have to do is look at why their most rabid fans have been jumping ship for the past 15 years and make a conscious effort to give them the games they have been fantasizing about since the late 90's. Every new generation, we hold our breath and think, "This is the one! It has better graphics than PS2! No. Oh, well this new one has WiFi and bluetooth and is like 2 1/2 Gamecubes stuck together! No. Ok, FINALLY, this one has HD and a badass gaming controller with awesome voice chat capabilities! Nintendo couldn't **** this up if they tried! :(
Ugh... so much frustration.
For a while I thought it would be cool to have a Kingdom Hearts style Subspace Emissary RPG, but then I realized that there aren't many of Nintendo's main characters who actually have personality, except possibly Mr. Game and Watch.

I remember playing Dream Land 2 after school on my Super Gameboy. The animals were a refreshing addition to Kirby's gameplay.

78
Ok it's cool that the 3D and 2D representations both correlate with each other, but isn't this a step back from DQ9? They are apparently opting for a grid-based Pokemon style movement system, which is just really irritating in a 3D game.

Ugh, the fruit and Yoshi should have been omitted entirely. Sunshine kind of reminds me of Jak and Daxter, how the fun parts were really fun, but the bad parts almost made me snap the disc in half.

TalkBack / Re: Baseless Speculation: Virtual Console on NX
« on: July 27, 2015, 09:32:29 PM »
I for one would love more 3DS remakes of Wii and Gamecube games. Xenoblade 3D and DKCR3D proved that anything is possible, if the controls are close enough. I'd have been much happier with a portable 3D Metroid Prime Trilogy than a Wii U download version, even if they sold the titles separately.

I got Shovel Knight and Another World for 3DS. Fez and Limbo for Vita. All great games so far. Fez is possibly my favorite game of this generation. I beat Another World in just a few hours. It was good, and I want the sequel, but it is a Sega CD exclusive, oddly enough.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NX smartphone SKU?
« on: July 25, 2015, 09:35:04 PM »
Ain't gonna happen, unless Nintendo severely wants their new console to be worthless 18 months after launch. Cell phones are temporary things.

But if the thing was dual-purpose, the cell phone bits could be upgraded every year or 18 months or whatever. The game console hardware in the device would essentially remain the same for the life of the console generation. Next generation, release a new model with updated gaming capabilities. Obviously people are picky about their phones, so if people prefer some other phone over the NX, then they would still have the option to buy the non-smartphone NX model to play games on.

I dislike capacitive touch screens for gaming, the lack of accuracy is a sore point. They may be accurate 99% of the time with the way software predicts what you actually meant to touch but that 1% when it doesn't work is incredibly irritating.

If they were able to make a capacitive AND resistive touch where the software can decide what to use then that would be for the best.

I feel the same way. I really hate to use phones for gaming. But this device would be the best of both worlds. Close the NX and the outer screen is capacitive and laid out like a modern smart phone. Then to play 3DS or NX games, open the screen and you'd have your 3D top screen and your resistive bottom touch screen that works with a stylus. The cheaper, non-phone NX would simply omit the capacitive outer screen and all the hardware that is specific to the smartphone NX. Yet it would still play all the same NX games and be backward compatible with 3DS.

Nintendo Gaming / NX smartphone SKU?
« on: July 25, 2015, 07:51:28 PM »
I realize there is a NX speculation thread, but it is very broad, and I wanted to bring up a more specific topic. With the way smartphones are sort of crowding out handheld gaming, I wonder if Nintendo is considering adding in smartphone technology to its NX portable. (I assume that NX is going to have a home console and a portable).

I think it's not too far fetched to imagine a lighter, thinner New 3DS with a capacitive touch LCD on the back of the clamshell. It would function as a phone when closed and a game system when opened. This might be released alongside a normal, phone-less SKU, kind of like Nintendo did with the Gamecube and the Panasonic Q.

You might say that this has been done before with Xperia Play and NGage, but those had horrible designs, implementation, marketing, etc. The Vita has 3G, but it's worthless. Sony was not willing to take enough risks with it either the Play or the Vita. If there was a Vita with Android that doubled as a smartphone, that would be my phone.

One major weakness in this strategy is that people like to "refresh" their smartphones periodically. Newer sleeker models are constantly being released, whether it's Android, iPhone, or Windows. If Nintendo sold a smartphone SKU alongside of the base SKU, they could continue to market the base model SKU, largely unchanged for years, while still making periodic re-releases of the smartphone models (with better battery life, features, etc.) The smartphone capabilities would get better over time to keep up with the Joneses, but it would always maintain that "NX3DS" base model capability.

Maybe a partnership with Samsung, LG, or some other big Android phone manufacturer would help bridge this gap that's growing between dedicated gaming handhelds and smart devices. Maybe even partnering with Apple is not out of the question. Obviously Microsoft is a no.

I would buy something like this, especially if it was backward compatible with 3DS and eShop. It would cut two of my devices down to one, but I wouldn't have to sacrifice any functionality - which is a big deal. I hate not having mechanical controls for my games. What are your thoughts?

We do have some good podcasts here. I'm on them sometimes, but mostly just when I'm talking about hockey, which I imagine most people don't listen to.

I'm up to episode #271, starting from the beginning of RFN, and I've heard you mentioned several times in reference to your forum posts. It's cool to meet you on here.

Were you on the forums in the PGC era?  Some of us have been here since then.

No, I don't think so. If I was I have completely forgotten about it. I just remember walking to the town library and checking PGC, Gamespot, and other such sites for hardware specs, rumours and anything else I could find about the system. After the Dreamcast failed, I jumped on the GCN bandwagon. Honestly, that was probably the best time ever to be a Nintendo fanboy. There was so much potential and momentum in the beginning of the generation. It's amazing that with all of the changes in the company and the internet since then, this website is still here and it still has many of the original people involved with it.

Edit: This is a little off topic, but I just remembered... Not sure if I posted this on PGC or not but I'm pretty sure it was, but I had this bat **** crazy theory that Nintendo's new handheld after the GBA was going to be disc system like the PSP, but instead of playing those minidiscs, it would use Gamecube discs and feature a Gamecube system on a chip that was redesigned for low power consumption. It would have launched with a full library of games already on the market. Games that had LAN play like Mariokart and Kirby's Air Ride would use Wifi for multiplayer, and memory cards would be shrunk down, but there would be an adapter to copy saves over from the Gamecube. I dunno, it made so much sense to me back then. As I remember, the other people on the forum thought I was insane, and rightly so. At the time, I also believed that the Phantom console was actually going to come to market and dominate Sony and Microsoft. Boy did I have big dreams.

Hi. I started posting here recently, but I hadn't introduced myself. So here I am! Googling "nintendo podcast" brought me here and, lo and behold, I discover that this site is the mega evolution of my long lost love: Planet Gamecube! What a great site. And props to RFN for introducing me to poutine, and for showing me how NOT to quit a job using a bag of poo.

Like lolmonade, also hoping that they finally remove that pointless icon from the Wii U menu screen after years of it being a waste of space.

The logical next step is to replace it with Pokemon Channel HD   :D

I tried to use this app a few times and I could never figure out what exactly it was supposed to do. It seemed to not have any useful functions, or at least none that were clear to me.

This is being developed on the leading consoles with the Unreal Engine. I'm wondering what engine it's using for the 3DS and Vita ports. Anyone know?

Maybe putting up a few Wii games was more of a feature highlight to make the Wii U more appealing, but Nintendo doesn't want to release many Wii games because they would rather people spend more money at retail for Wii U titles. Nintendo has a history of trying to manipulate the market in mysterious ways. The motivation to funnel consumers toward retail is there though. Nintendo has lost a lot of console shelf space in recent years.

The current digital content setup across the four active platforms (DSi, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS) is like a Rube Goldberg machine at this point. NX needs one storefront and one OS menu to launch games from (no Wii U mode please). It should at least launch with all previously available titles, and Nintendo should de-emphasize the Virtual Console jargon. Maybe get rid of it altogether. People understand "classic games", but the meaning of term "Virtual Console" is not immediately apparent to your average consumer, and it implies that there is more going on than simply old games on new platforms. Also, it raises the expectation that all or nearly all of the old games are going to be available, because it is a "virtual console", not "a limited selection of emulated games from older consoles".

TalkBack / Re: Minecraft Still Possible On Nintendo Platforms
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:01:14 PM »
I always think to myself that Minecraft is extremely boring and pointless. I only play for my six year old son on multiplayer. But then I find myself not wanting to quit. Our multiplayer games go on for hours sometimes and I could just keep going if I didn't willfully pull myself away and tell him we've had enough video games for the day. I'm thinking that Minecraft Story Edition is really going to hook me in when I comes out. I can only hope for a 3DS release. I have it for Vita, but 3D games will always take preference for me over the higher def Vita versions. Dat New 3DS

This is the EXACT same application that Miyamoto used to handcraft the original Super Mario Bros. levels back in the 80's. About time we got our hands on it if you ask me.

Wow, I'm actually very proud of Ninty for doing this. Now, it will be interesting to see if gay men in their games are represented by something more than the typical femmy, emotionally hypersensitive, flamboyant stereotype that is common in Japanese media. Someone on RFN put it well when he said, "A Japanese joke about gay people, is that gay people exist." I think it was Johnny Metz, going on about the LoZ character Tingle, and how Japanese often use that stereotype as a form of comic relief.

Let me know when Monster Hunter integrates a deep and nuanced story with complex character development. Otherwise, I'll pass on the latest and greatest monotonous grind fest.

TalkBack / Re: Bravely Default Review
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:53:53 AM »
I just picked up this game. I agree that BD is strongly reminiscent of the Final Fantasy glory days. The Final Fantasy-ish story backdrop (airships and crystals and such) was at first a little off-putting, but I think this is only because I have been burned by all of the bajillion broken clones and spin-offs of the series since the PSOne era ended. I honestly don't mind the same props being used over and over, as long as the story is interesting and the gameplay is compelling enough to keep me going. Bravely manages to hit that sweet spot. Although, the anime tropes are a little bit irritating. Now, if they can crank out a game that captures that oppressive cyber/steampunk aesthetic that was in Final Fantasy VII, they will have all my money.

TalkBack / Re: REVIEWS: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
« on: December 31, 2014, 10:46:28 AM »
The thing that kills this game for me is the lack of an involving story/world/character presentation. The world seems rather thin, like it was tossed together to provide an excuse for the gameplay and puzzles. I'm aware that this probably is how Nintendo develops Zelda titles, but they haven't had trouble with it before these Toon Link games. For me there was little incentive to explore Spirit Tracks and uncover the hidden stories of different characters, like I did with Majora's Mask or Link to the Past. I'm still going to finish it though. I'm at the Fire Temple now.

Masterpieces (The demos you are thinking of) are only available in the Wii U version, with links to the e-Shop built in.

Well, that's disappointing, but expected. I was hoping for some portable game masterpieces, given the nature of the VC selection on 3DS versus that of Wii U, not that the masterpieces are a huge selling point. It would still be neat to have some short playable versions of New Super Mario Bros., Metroid Prime Hunters, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Sonic Rush, or a selection of Gameboy games.

I don't have either of these new Smash games. Can someone tell me if they have unlockable game demos in the 3DS version, like they did in Melee and Brawl? If so, are the demos different between the 3DS and Wii U versions?
