Title: My notes on Super Mario Sunshine
Post by: AdmanAbou on December 05, 2015, 09:03:13 PM

Hey guys! I took these notes while playing Sunshine for the telethon. I didn't realize how negative they were until I'd beaten the game.

Super Mario Sunshine
This is what I learned:

Wait, what the **** are Piantas? They look like elephants mated with chewed gum.

I agree with you that the game is both terrible and amazing. It's very odd. Kind of like when it's hot outside, but also freezing cold.

Super Mario Sunshine is the best 3D Mario game.

I went back to this game a couple months ago, playing it for the first time in probably over a decade, and I just couldn't get past the camera. It rendered the game virtually unplayable for me.

I don't think the problems with this game is so fundamental that a remake could not easily fix with the power of new hardware.

I think the automatic camera movement can be pretty bad, but you can adjust it pretty well in any situation. The game needed a "Z-Targeting" camera like Ocarina of Time though.

Just a more modern camera and more real shines instead of the blue coin bullshit would do wonders for it.

The Camera stick exists for a reason, people!

I have more of an issue with Yoshi than I do with the camera in Sunshine. I hated how he melted in water when the game takes place on a tropical island and you carry around a big WATER GUN.

Yoshi was so crappy in this game. He was like a delicate flower that handled poorly. I really hated that the camera would reset behind you whenever you hovered, sometimes clipping through walls and stuff. That made some levels way too difficult

Yoshi is really the low point of the game for me, and everything related to him. Like that absurd challenge of spraying the Yoshi goop from the pipe on the island in the main hub. Who thought THAT was a good idea?

I might have been able to tolerate the design decisions for Yoshi if it weren't for that awful over-world challenge.

Some of the levers were controller throwing frusturating. Others were amazing fun. I loved the beach levels and the small beach levels outside the amusement park, and the windmill area. The Waterfall sucked.

Miyamoto is Bowser Jr's Mother.

I don't remember Sunshine well enough to really comment on it, just that it was the point where I started to hate Mario games. In fact Mario Party 4 was the only game on Game Cube that had Mario in the title I didn't hate.

I'd like to see an HD remake of Sunshine.  One where Nintendo could fix some of the issues and uprez the visuals.  I don't think gamepad support would be particularly useful (a map would be ok), but the game would look great in HD.

I would rather they remake Mario 64 instead, preferably based off the DS version but with better graphics, control stick compatibility and maybe some more new levels. Not just a re-release of the actual DS game but a proper Super Mario 64 HD using the DS version as a template.
