General Chat / RE: iPod Touch
« on: September 07, 2007, 07:03:25 PM »
EasyCure, I hear what you are saying about having lots of albums per band.  I'm exactly the same way.  I have way too many complete box collections as well, but the fact of the matter is this.  In a 24 hour day, I can at most listen to 24 hours worth of music.  Would you disagree?  I have over 100 hours of music on my phone (in addition to plenty of music videos, video podcasts, short films I've done, and The Two Towers).  I can only listen to so much of that in a day.  Usually how I do it is put a few bands I'm more likely to listen to that day, and then put on some I haven't heard for a while.  It makes what music is there feel fresh, and every time I come home I can have it randomly refill, or randomly refill the remaining space after all my top rated tracks make it on.

I'm not going to argue that having all 80 gigs of your music on your person isn't a better thing.  To argue that is ridiculous.  I'm not sure I want to know how much an iPhone with 80 gigs of storage would cost though.  That would be crazy.  What I am saying, is that I've seen people in your position (Remember, I was one of them) that hold to the idea that a portable devise must hold EVERYTHING that is on your computer when you are on the go.  It's simply not necessary (although I will give you that it's convenient).  What is ridiculous is turning down a product for silly reasons.  I had the 30 gig iPod (back when my collection would fit inside of that), but then I downgraded to a 2 gig nano simply for the form factor (and ironically, I would heartedly recommend the nano over the full size, but that's a different story).  What I was surprised to find is how much I could actually fit into that.  I've never had issues with the space limitations given, although you are correct I can't hold my whole library.  Oh, and if you want to talk about devises that can hold everything on my computer on the go, care to find me a handheld that has over two terabytes of storage?  If you could, I would love you forever. ;-)

Also, the keyboard on the iPhone takes most users about a day to become fluent on it.  I could barely tap out a message when I first used it, and the auto correct didn't help me much.  In time, after it got used to me, and I got used to it we have a much better relationship.  30  WPM is the fun-lovin' truth man.

(Oh, and about being a lover of music?  I'm currently directing a Rock Opera Musical.  I know what that means.  :-))

1 million iPhones sold?  100 bucks back to them all by choice?  I don't care how you slice it, that's impressive.  I certainly was not expecting to get 100 bucks credit to any store.  I'm stoked.

Also, what's with the Nintendo 5 dollar vouchers?  I certainly don't remember that.

Easycure, if I were you, I'd straight up go with the iPhone.  The 200 dollar discount is a huge plus, let alone everything else it does.  I've had it since it came out, and I haven't had any complaints what-so-ever.  Personally, yes, like most people here, I have more than 8 gigs of media to put on it.  What I realized though that I _don't_ have more than 8 gigs worth of music that I listen to on a regular basis.  Most people don't.  I actually had this revelation when I bought my ipod nano.  I dock my phone every night to charge it, and if I realize there was a song that I missed listening to during the day, I find my least played song, and I swap it.  It has never been an issue thus far.

What has been nice though, is the keyboard.  Most people don't realize, but the auto-correct that it has is fantastic.  I can easily type 30 WPM on the keyboard.  Personally, I can't speak to your wanting to keep every number memorized, but I will tell you what some of my friends did for me.  Just before I moved down to LA my friends gave me a care package.  In it, they included a business card with all of my important contacts.  Basically, I never would have thought of it, but hey, why not use it as your fail safe?

People complain about the battery life (I've never personally had it run out on my), people complain about the price (just dropped 200 bucks, besides the fact that it was worth it at 600 bucks), people just like complaining.  Coming from an actual owner, I'll tell you go for it.  I love it.  I use it every day.  I use most of the features on a daily basis, and don't know how I'd settle for anything less.

I'll give you that.  Portland does have a lot of film talent, I'll give you that.  What I've seen Portland lacks though is the infrastructure.  There are plenty of post houses all over the place, sure.  What I had issue with in Portland was the limited selection of locations of which to get gear from.  There is essentially one.  Also, Oregon's film office isn't very helpful or informative.  Now, it's perfectly possible to get around these issues, but it wasn't for me.  I'm more of the filmmaker, and less of the producer.  I didn't have any producing friends, and that made everything more difficult for me.  Props on the move though, I've made plenty of fun films around those parts.  And it certainly is beautiful around there.

The variety of locations is certainly one thing I am missing down here though.  All within an hour or two from Portland are deserts, beaches, snow scapes, forests, fields, and underground caverns.  Me?  Well, I've got palm trees.

And whoops, my bad.  I didn't mean PLU (although I do have friends who attend) I meant PSU.  I'll have him send me some of the articles you've written.

You guys thought Superbad was funny?  Wait until Pineapple Express comes out.  Sooo freaking funny.  It's done by the same people and it apparently comes out 8/8/08 but dang if it isn't funny.  Saw an advance screening, and I highly recommend it.  Write it down.

Dude, props on the move.  Portland rocks.  I grew up down in Hood River, and lived in Beaverton for a few years.  I love it up there.  I recently moved down to LA to pursue film, but if there was any sort of film business going on up there you know that's where I'd be.  If you need suggestions or recommendations of places to stay hit me up man.  My bro is starting at PLU in a few weeks as well, so that's cool.  Also congrats on the writing gig.

I actually own that RCA setup.  It's pretty great.  Small Hollywood apartment, gets plenty loud, has enough inputs, and you can always upgrade the speakers.  *Thumbs up*

I really believe that Samus is going to be split into 2 characters.

For starters, why call her a "newcomer" if the character isn't going to be a new character?  If it was just a modification to Samus, why give the distinction "newcomer".  But I hear you say "on the old dojo site it said 'under certain conditions'".  Yeah?  So what?  To me, it seems like that is more of a back story than gameplay detail.

Secondly, consider this (my biggest piece of evidence saying they are indeed two characters), ZSS has a pistol/whip.  AKA, multiple playstyles already built in.  Why would ZSS get not only two different fighting methods, but armored Samus's fight style as well?  Sheesh.  We need separation here folks.

For me personally, I thought it was cool that Zelda and Sheik could go back and forth, but I never used it.  I always held 'A' before the match, and played as Sheik.  I didn't like playing as either character though because I lost the opportunity to have a down A with both of them.  I felt like I was missing a move, rather than being excited I had a different character/playstyle available.  If they do this to Samus (a crowd favorite) I'm going to be seriously annoyed.

It turns out these "new" screenshots have already been released.  Months ago.  That is why they don't look better than the build from months ago.  Let me see if I can find the video they are from...

Interesting note, Samus hasn't acquired the grapple beam yet.  The beam that is coming out seems to be coming from the jewel on her wrist.  As far as I know, the jewel has never been used before, just shown.  I think that's awesome.

Slight Prime 3 spoilers

Spak is right on that one.  In some of the play-through videos released from E3 last year, Samus met up with some other bounty hunters.  Some that actually had a significant role.  We'll see how that goes though.

[/offtopic]  1 week my friends.  I'm so stoked it's not even funny.  I've recently moved 1000 miles from my regular Smashing buddies, so some good news on the online structure would be very welcome about now.  Can't freaking wait.

Sweet.  That's awesome.  So this is becoming a trend?  How can 3rd parties not want to make games for these two systems now?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this make it the first week Nintendo has held all of the top 10 spots in Japan in years?  I'm too lazy to go looking through, but I think the DS topped out at 8 or 9 of the top 10 itself, and didn't have any help getting those last few.  The Wii though has done that, or so it would seem at this point.

Spak, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's true.  Japanese Law forbids them from revealing anything before their trade is complete.  Now, this trade is supposed to go through in early March, so we _may_ get lucky, but it's a slim chance.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: How To: Get Cheap Wii Points
« on: March 01, 2007, 06:36:31 PM »
I have been to many Best Buys in the Pacific Northwest.  Only in one of them did I ever find these cards.  I was told that each store has the choice of them being a regularly stocked item, which means, if you abuse it, they will stop carrying the cards.  It's my only guess why I've only ever seen one card total.

Now that I'm in LA though, I'm definitely going to be looking around to see if any Best Buys around here have the cards, because 1/4 off of VC games is freaking sweet.

Sorry for the bump, but I want to say thank you Vudu.  I've seen you linking back here and that makes me happy.  I actually got an offer to have the video featured on a DVD collection of "the best and most popular viral and broadcast commercials".  I missed the entry by a day (I don't check my Youtube account all that often), but I'm currently talking to them about getting into the next edition.  That would be nice.

Wow Vudu, thanks for the support.  I'm glad you liked it.  I've been on Digg for around a year now.  It's had its phases, some good, some not so good.  It's currently going through a not so good one, in my opinion, but there is still quite a bit of good information there.  Do sign up.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Unpopular wii kiosks
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:25:30 PM »
My question to you is, how many people have you personally had over to your house to play the Wii, or have you let experience it.  Now compare that to the Gamecube.  How many of the people that you show the Wii to would never go into a EB/GS?  For me, there is no doubt Nintendo has the winning strategy.  My single Wii has already sold 4 that I know about and can look back on.  That is a 400 percent increase in sales then they would have had before.  400 percent.  You wonder why they are still sold out?  This number doesn't include the people that I have sold on it that are currently saving up either.  These are solid purchases.  I know another 4 people buying them.  Suffice it to say, I don't think there is any cause to worry about an unplayed kiosk at this point in time.

I mean, when my dad got his (he's in his 70s, btw) he told me he picked it up "Over at Gameboy".  He didn't even know what GameStop actually was.  Nintendo's got a good brand name, and anybody trying to tell you otherwise is full of it at this point.

General Gaming / Component/Composite To VGA
« on: January 20, 2007, 07:47:31 PM »
Hey, I'm in a bit of a predicament here.  I'm moving in the coming week, and I can't take my CRT TV with me.  I have a Wii, and would still like to play at my new place without having to go out and buy a new set.  My idea was that I would take my LCD monitor with me, because of its size and ability to display a higher resolution.  What I'm looking for is something that could take a component and/or a composite image and display it on a VGA or DVI signal.  Anybody have any help?

When I was first reading the first post, I was just about to recommend the Mini.  It really is a great machine.  For clarification though, it does only come with a Core Duo chip, and not a Core 2 Duo chip.  But, at the same time, they are both great chips.  I ran a Core Duo for many months and was very pleased.  If you go the mini route, I'll doubt you'd be disappointed.

When I saw that comic, the first thing I thought was Gears of War.  Great game, but the 6th panel pretty much summed it up.  Brown, dark, and bloomed out where possible.  It could be other games as well, as it is the growing trend, but if I had to pick a game, to me, it looks most like Gears.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Xmas Wii Reactions...
« on: December 28, 2006, 10:41:10 AM »
My dad and my mom both got a Wii for Christmas.  Talk about weird.  They both played a game a piece on the 64 while neither ever touched a Gamecube controller.  They are definitive nongamers.  I find it hilarious they both asked for a Wii after playing mine, and both got one.  It's stories like this that are keeping them sold out at every store.  Whoever said 250 was too much must not have had an idea of how awesome the system really is.

I regrettably have to decline to the invitation I received to this game.  I'm moving in the next week here and I really don't have time to get in on this.  I'll ask my brother to play, because it really does sound like a lot of fun.  Good luck everyone.
