What Could Be Next for the Super Mario Amiibo Series?
« on: January 16, 2015, 02:46:34 AM »

We set the odds and speculate on the future of Nintendo’s second line of Amiibo.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/39445/what-could-be-next-for-the-super-mario-amiibo-series

We learned of the Super Mario Amiibo series during the recent Nintendo Direct. This figurine series, launching on March 20 alongside Mario Party 10, includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, and Toad. Those six figures make up wave one, and all of them work with Mario Party 10 and other games.

While Nintendo hasn't explicitly stated that the Super Mario line will have future waves, it only makes sense that their most famous series will have more Amiibo added to it in the future. What could those future figures be? We hit up our local Nintendo bookie to see what the odds were for certain characters coming out in Amiibo form.

Wario

I mean, Wario's compatible with the game and is coming out in Smash Bros. Amiibo form around the launch of Mario Party 10. This is a no-brainer. Also, from that recent Jakks Pacific line of Nintendo toys, there are literally two almost-identical Wario figures of slightly different heights. Face it: this garlic-loving asshole is getting another Amiibo.

Odds: 5/4

Donkey Kong

Rejoice, rejoice! Donkey Kong will be back in Mario Party as a playable character for the first time since Mario Party 4. The big ape also has his own series in Donkey Kong Country. I think this is a little less of a slam dunk because Donkey Kong's repeat Amiibo performance could be in a Donkey Kong Country-centric series as opposed to a Mario one. Still, I'd bet good money DK gets another run around the Amiibo carousel.

Odds: 2/1

Rosalina & Luma

Looks like Rosalina will be playable in Mario Party 10 since her Amiibo will be compatible. It seems like Nintendo is trying to boost Rosalina's relevance as she's showing up in more and more games. Especially with the disaster that is pre-ordering Rosalina's Amiibo at Target (it's a retailer exclusive), I wouldn't be shocked if Rosalina returns in the Super Mario line as a more common figure.

Odds: 3/1

Toadette

Toadette had arguably her breakout performance in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. It might make sense to release a figure of the adventurous toadstool that functions similarly to Toad's own Amiibo. If Toadette's playable in Mario Party 10, I think it's very likely that her Amiibo comes out later this year working as both an unlock key for Captain Toad and as a character in Mario Party 10's Amiibo Party.

Odds: 5/1

Waluigi

Now that Tingle is playable in Hyrule Warriors, I'm going to focus my efforts on willing a Waluigi Amiibo into the world. He is the stupidest Mario series character and maybe he can unlock a fart noise in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. as well.

15/1

Birdo

You know that Birdo's name in Japanese is Catherine? That always struck me as weird. I would love to see Birdo take Amiibo form, but it seems a little unlikely. Birdo still shows up in sports games and the like every now and then, but her overall attendance has been spotty. I don't think this is going to happen soon, if ever.

Odds: 50/1

Boo

With Boo showing up in past Mario Party games, this ghost character could be a cool Amiibo. Then I thought about how he'd even be on the base and thought back to how goofy some of the Smash Bros. Amiibo look with their weird colored poles that support each character. I'd think now that Nintendo is going away from Smash Bros. trophies, they'll make figures that make more sense. Boo might not make sense.

Odds: 100/1

Ridley

On second thought, this is impossible. Ridley's too big to be an Amiibo.

Odds: 1,000,000,000/1

I'm not sure what new Amiibo could be more representative of the Super Mario franchise than Captain Olimar.

Sure let's talk about Toadette and add a throwaway Ridley joke but say nothing about Shy-Guy. I'm watching you NWR...

I choose to believe that that was a high level attempt at trolling a prominent forum member here who has a particular fondness for that character. You know, Brandogg.

I thought there already was a Daisy figure, guess she isn't as important as whoever that chick is from Galaxies?

I'll bet Daisy and Waluigi come out for a "Super Mario Sports" series of Amiibo.

New Donkey Kong and Rosalina amiibo designs can be seen in the Mario Party 10 trailer, so I'd wager those two are all but guaranteed. Would love to see a different design for DK, and a classic Wario.

I've bought more of these than I'd like to admit, but I think after Megaman, I'm done.

The only exception I've made for myself is if they release an alternate Mario Amiibo fashioned after Super Mario World:

Holy Crap! I hadn't even thought about the possibility of a Classic NES or SNES series of figures. Having spent hours staring at that older art when I was younger, I would buy amiibo based on those designs in a heartbeat.

I'd be down for that. Old Yoshi > new Yoshi.
