Nintendo Download - August 25, 2011
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:23:00 AM »

Two Virtual Console games (one 3DS, one Wii), a calculator on DSiWare, and more hit Nintendo's download platforms this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27596

Three DSiWare games, one 3DS Virtual Console title, a Wii Virtual Console game, and a WiiWare demo make up this week's downloads.

Gargoyle's Quest, developed by Capcom and originally released for Game Boy in 1990, is the headliner of the week. This adventure/RPG hybrid is vaguely similar to something such as Zelda II and it stars Firebrand, a villain from the Ghosts 'n Goblins series. You can pick it up for $3.99 on the eShop.

The lone new title on the Wii Shop Channel is The Ignition Factor, a Super Nintendo game from Jaleco. You control a firefighter who must go from room to room, extinguishing fires and saving lives. It can be yours for 800 Wii Points ($8). There is also a demo of the August 11 release, Kyotokei, which is similar to Ikaruga.

Magical Whip: Wizards of the Phantasmal Forest, from Agetec, is an interesting-looking game. For $1.99 or 200 Nintendo DSi Points, you can get this dual-screened platformer that is reliant on using your whip to create combos so you can defeat the powerful enemies that lie within the forest.

Let's Create! Pottery is one of the new DSiWare games. From Infinite Dreams, it is exactly what you'd expect from the title: you create pottery using the touch screen. For $4.99 of 500 Nintendo DSi Points, you can buy this game so you can make pottery for your friends using your DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS.

The final title of the week is Calculator, an application available on DSiWare and the eShop for $1.99 or 200 Nintendo DSi Points. From CINEMAX, it is labeled as the one and only calculator you'll ever need.

Calculator does look pretty nice, especially compared to the equally priced Mario and Animal Crossing calculators.  It seems quite useful and I'm definitely intrigued by it...  But do I really have any need for it if I already have a TI-84?

Also, with how quickly they go through that video, it struck me as kind of odd that they included calculation errors.  They're legit errors, though.  The first is an overflow error from the factorial command, 120! (120 * 119 * 118 * ... * 3 * 2 * 1), which also happens on the TI-84, and the second is a 1/x command where x = 0, which also happens on everything.

I tried entering 120! manually into the TI-84 and was able to get 120 * ... * 71 before overflowing, with a result of 5.584558074E98.  It looks like Calculator displays the same number of digits and would likely overflow in the same place.  On the other hand, Calculator appears to handle scientific notation differently.  One of the screenshots shows the decimal point after 10 digits instead of after 1, which might allow the numbers to go higher before it overflows.  If someone is able to verify this, it would be much appreciated.

I got the GQ cart but writing down passwords isn't great for mobile gaming so I'll still grab this version.

You're not being sarcastic, right?  Because I haven't bought anything from the eshop since Kirby's Dream Land, so I'm achin like a junkie here.  I really want to buy and enjoy this game, but I've never heard of it before.

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

If Gargoyle's Quest is anywhere near as good as the criminally forgotten SNES masterpiece Demon Crest, then it's worth downloading.

Gargoyle's Quest is showing its age, but I'm still digging it a lot. It just moves glacially slow at times.
