This is great news! I'd love to see some new courses, including redone retro tracks. The addition of more characters is also a nice bonus, especially those outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. Bring on Nintendo Kart.

Perhaps I've missed it, but I don't see any Mii selection on those supposed screenshots of the character roster.

The fellow who runs Rose Colored Gaming has great design talent, and his commitment to quality is second to none. Unfortunately, the current situation regarding his products is that demand far exceeds supply, and his current supply of GBA SP screens has apparently dried up. So, if you are hoping to get one of these, you'd better say a small prayer, grab some rations and sit in front of your computer, frequently hitting the refresh button on your browser, hoping that you get lucky and grab one when new stock is put up.

I've been hoping to grab one myself, but they recently went up in price, and I've never been lucky enough to visit the store when they have stock.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 142: I Like to Grind
« on: July 18, 2014, 07:33:53 PM »
Twilight Princess has to be one of my favourite three Zelda games. While I certainly can't argue that the game has an incredibly slow start, to me, almost everything that happens after that more than makes up for it. The game is vast in almost every way. The dungeons are huge, featuring many unique elements that make them fun to explore. Using the iron boots to walk along the magnetized ceiling to the fire dungeon, gliding over pits of spikes using the spinner to cling to the sides of walls, and whipping around the sky dungeon with the double claw shots are just some of the examples that come to mind. The bosses are also fairly gigantic, though a little on the easy side, and had several creative aspects and were quite memorable, like the fire giant who is first chained up when you enter his domain, or the giant fossil dragon whose attacks you dodge while using the spinner to climb higher and higher within the room, or the giant gohma that you must smash with the statues by controlling them with the divination rod. I'll never forget the silent beauty of snowboarding down a mountainside on a frozen leaf to reach a yeti's house that turns out to be a dungeon, or stepping into a derelict Temple of Time by means of a doorway that transports you into the past, or walking into Hyrule Castle at the end of the game and hearing the castle theme from A Link to the Past, except that it's presented in a much more eerie context.

Apparently I could go on and on about the experiences in this game that stuck with me. I own the Gamecube version, which may be easier to play over longer periods of time. It's unlikely that I would have stayed up the entire night to finish the game if I had to use a Wii Remote.

This is very neat! However, I'll probably pass. If it's eventually reprinted and sold through Amazon.ca like some of pixnlove's other books are, then it'll probably be more affordable.

Yeah, it's really a shame the way most rewards on the Club Nintendo site are distributed. The most popular rewards that are offered often sell out incredibly quickly. The only thing that prevents that seems to be if the coin cost is extremely high, and even then it's not a guarantee (such as the Kirby Medal, which I believe was 1000 coins).

I also wanted to snag one of those snazzy Red 3DS XL reversible pouches, but they were sold out for the longest time, and when they were re-added, they immediately sold out again. Now they've been replaced with two colours that I am not at all interested in.

It's as though they intentionally limit the number of their cooler rewards. Sigh.

Very nice, Uncle Bob. I missed the Brain Age 2 and Kirby Canvas Curse stylus rewards during the MyNintendo era.

As far as Club Nintendo rewards, I've quite enjoyed the poster sets. Haven't really gone crazy over many of the other rewards, though they are all certainly neat in their own way. Kinda wish I had picked up the Handheld History Cards, though.

Were you able to snag a Kirby medal?

It seems like I'll be continuing my recently instituted trend of downloading remakes when Nintendo offers me a free digital game. I picked up The Wind Waker HD with the Mario Kart 8 free game download, and it looks like I'll be choosing Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D here.

This is excellent news. All are solid titles, and there are a couple of rare gems in there as well. Looking forward to finally being able to download the original Breath of Fire!

I may be the one guilty of writing the long e-mail to you guys a week or two ago. I knew it was long (apologies!), but I thought I'd give it a shot. In the unlikely event of a listener mail drought sometime in the near future, feel free to dust it off, hack it up, and paraphrase!

If Nintendo Power Wrestling actually becomes a thing, then Howard and Nester must be playable characters.

Good news! I was able to pick up my copy from the post office this evening, so I don't have to wait until Monday night! I will hopefully see everyone online sometime this weekend!

Regarding the NFC figures, Nintendo often takes consumer value into consideration, so it will be interesting to see exactly how they implement these.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl never had online to begin with. (ZING!)

I had a great time jumping back into this game tonight, even if I was only able to spend about 30 minutes playing with the RFN community!

I really do adore this game. While I was waiting to begin playing tonight, I decided to check my stats. I thought I had put around 100 hours into the multiplayer, but it turns out that I've actually put 8 days and 9 hours into the online mode -- and that's probably not counting the times my Wii locked up and I had to do a hard reset. I've put 8 days of my life into Goldeneye 007's online mode on the Wii, and now they are shutting it down. All I can say is, "Time well spent!"

When I think about it, this was really my first online console experience. Sure, I dabbled in Battalion Wars II's online mode, but this was the first game that I really spent serious time online playing. It certainly isn't perfect, but it did the job insofar as connecting me with other human beings to play the game, and getting the drop on other people really was rather satisfying.

There are a couple of things in particular that I really enjoyed in Goldeneye's online multiplayer mode. The first is that the mechanics of the game are fairly simple and not overly complicated. You can carry two weapons, you can crouch, you can melee attack, and you have a grenade or explosive of some sort that you can deploy. Where things do get a little more complex is the unlocking and application of the various weapons and upgrades you acquire as you level up. These can be game changers, which can completely make the game unbalanced if playing with lower-level opponents. I remember when I first started playing the game and was getting killed left and right, but as I slowly got the hang of the controls and learned the layout of the levels (which is extremely beneficial), I started to rise through the ranks. Unlocking those upgrades was both satisfying and addictive because it felt like I had earned them, especially after playing the role of fresh meat for so many players who outranked me.

There are a lot of fun modes in the online component of the game, all of which are worth a try. Golden Gun mode is great fun, and hero mode is fairly interesting as well. I also have to say that I really enjoyed the majority of the maps -- a lot of them have plenty of nooks and crannies one can wedge oneself into and surprise another player. Even more interesting is that the levels change depending on the mode that you are playing. For example, Statue Park has several sections open up and many different tunnels appear if you are playing the mode in which you must destroy the other team's briefcase. I think the level designs in the game are terrific -- each is fairly unique and offers areas for close-quarters combat as well as open areas to attack from afar. The Jungle and Outpost are the two I enjoy the most, but I enjoyed playing on all of them.

One disappointing aspect of the online mode is not being able to create or customize your own avatar. You are always assigned a random character, and in some levels, certain players have a much greater advantage. A player that is dressed in all black will be much more difficult to spot in levels like the sewers, or in the dark corners of places like the jungle.

One of the most memorable things that happened to me while playing the online mode was dropping into a game where all of the XP rewards seemed to have gone haywire -- either that, or someone was playing with some sort of mod, which was the far more likely scenario. Anywho, whenever I would kill an opponent, I would get something upwards of 1000 XP each time. By the end of the round, I had something like 24000 XP! On this particular day, I remember level up several times in the course of just a few matches. Luckily, this was near the level cap -- likely around level 50 or so, which was a big help because higher levels require a ridiculous amount of XP to level up. Unfortunately, the host left before I could really max out my stats, but I remember it being one of the most bizarre and enjoyable set of matches I had played.

I am sad that the online mode of this game will soon be no more. It's quite unfortunate. I may have to make the transition to Black Ops II on the Wii U, which is a game I own but haven't yet had the opportunity to play.

Added my friend code to the thread! I am jumping on right now. I will only be able to join for the first half hour or so, so I want to make it count!

Glad to hear you are giving this game just a little extra time to cook! I haven't had the opportunity to jump in and join fellow NWR forum members in any matches yet! Will be sure to post my friend code before I boot it up.

I'm not entirely clear whether this is a sequel or just an upgraded version of the original.

I don't always agree with everything Ian says, but I have to agree that everyone passing through Langley should visit the Willow Video. I'm a local resident and frequent it often. Their prices are relatively fair, and their selection is usually pretty good. Unfortunately, it's stock of older Nintendo games has been dwindling lately. Hopefully that will be rectified soon when the garage sales start up again.

Glad to hear that Ian found a copy of Chrono Trigger. There are some games I've been on the hunt for that I've never laid eyes on. It's unfortunate how difficult it is to find some of these old cartridges.

At the very least, I am very happy to have seen both Xenoblade Chronicles and Twilight Princess go as far as they did.

Sounds like fun! I'll play along. Though, truth be told, there are only two specific titles on my VC wishlist:

1. Ninja Five-O
2. Mother 3

A list of games I've enjoyed, and maybe you will too:

1. Metroid: Zero Mission
2. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
3. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
5. Advance Wars
6. Metroid Fusion
7. Harmony of Dissonance
8. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
9. Mario Vs. Donkey Kong
10. Sonic Advance
