General Chat / Before you do your Black Friday shopping...
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:57:04 PM »
I'd suggest signing up for a few services.

For online shopping, the first is Ebates. The way Ebates works is you find the site where you want to shop for a referral link. Once you make a purchase, you're credited back a certain percentage back, and Ebates will cut you a check every three months. They've just bumped up a bunch of their percentages, and some are as high as 10%, which can be pretty significant, especially if you're buying a bunch of games. They're summarily higher than all of the credit card referrals that I've seen. It sounds too good to be true, but I can confirm that they are actually legit. I've gotten payments, and they're owned by the same people as Fatwallet.

For in-store shopping, there's Shopkick. With this one, you can check into certain retail stores to gain points, and you can link up your credit cards to gain more points. You can also scan various product barcodes to get more points. You can cash out the points for digital gift cards. Some stores also post special coupons through the app. It's not as rewarding as Ebates, but it's good if you need to kill time while shopping.

There's also Shop Your Way Rewards, which works at the Sears and Kmart group of stores, both online and offline. Basically, you earn at least 1% in points for each purchase. But the nice thing is that you can cash those points out at any time, just credit them against your order in conjunction with any other coupons (and stacked with Ebates). They also have a bunch of coupons that you can add to your account that can sometimes be pretty significant. I also get relatively frequent coupon e-mails from them where I can just go to the store and pick up something like a piece of clothing for free (no wonder their business is failing...).

Yes, I'd appreciate if you'd use the referral links above so I get credit, but it's up to you. Know of any other good deals that we can use in conjunction with regular Black Friday deals?

TalkBack / Crashmo Impressions
« on: October 09, 2012, 08:05:10 AM »

The sequel isn't a push-over.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/32048

Mallo and Papa Blox return, along with Papa's grand-niece, Poppy. Mallo introduces himself to her with a characteristic sumo shiko stomp, startling the birds who had carried Poppy in on a hot air balloon-like basket and causing them to seek refuge on the top of Crashmo structures. Mallo must collect all of the birds so that Poppy can go home.

Crashmo is structured entirely like Pushmo, with levels made up of large, colorful blocks that can be pushed and pulled whereby Mallo must jump to the top of each level to collect the bird. While superficially similar, the rules have changed, and the blocks are no longer expand from or are tied to a support structure. As the Crashmo/Fallblox names imply, blocks that have nothing under them come falling to the ground. They cannot tilt, however, so even a single cubic support piece is enough to keep them suspended. Mallo can now grab and move blocks forward and backward and side to side, and can now pull out blocks onto the surface he is standing on. Mallo can even balance the Tetris-esque blocks on his head, though his movement is severely limited in this situation.

The first two sets of stages I played consist of tutorial levels, which introduce the concepts of the game with relatively simple puzzles. It was evident even from these early stages that the puzzles afforded by the Crashmo rules could be much trickier than those of Pushmo. Without a solid support wall, players must find ways of keeping blocks suspended by moving other blocks into place, and it is very easy to push the wrong thing and have the structure collapse, forcing a rewind or restart. To aid with this increased complexity, you can now view puzzles from multiple angles.

Like its predecessor, Crashmo also includes a level editor with QR code import and export so that players can create and share their own designs. Later levels apparently introduce doors and other more complex mechanics, such as cloud blocks that float on their own.

Pushmo was a surprise with its simple, yet very engaging and ingenious puzzle designs. Crashmo deftly continues and expands that tradition. I look forward to its November 22 eShop release.

One trend I've noticed is fairly frequent searches for "unclebob's man nipple"

The system will retail for $249.99 and launches March 27.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24774

At the Nintendo 3DS Preview Event in New York, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced the launch date and price of the Nintendo 3DS. The handheld will debut with a MSRP of $249.99 on March 27. This date comes near the end of the previously promised launch timeframe, which ends with the company's fiscal year on March 31.

Fils-Aime noted that focus groups consistently felt that the features included in the system warranted a price as high as $300 - $400, however Nintendo chose to keep the system price at $249.99, equivalent with the Wii launch price, and $100 more than the Nintendo DS.

The system will initially be available in two colors, Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. Over 30 games will be available during the "launch window", but specific launch-date games have not yet been announced.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Tech Demo: 3D Paddleball
« on: June 19, 2010, 07:18:39 AM »
What better a game to demonstrate the new system than one of the earliest video games, Pong?
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=23450

One of the tech demos at Nintendo's 3DS booth was essentially a first-person version of Pong.  It is very similar to this Flash game, but in 3D, of course.  Players moved their translucent paddle using the stylus.  The ball appeared to move backward and forward in 3D, increasing in speed with each bounce.  Though the game was over after a couple points, it did a good job demoing the 3D capability of the system, making it feel like the ball was really bouncing up and down in front of your face.
