Silicon Knights Planning New Studio
« on: March 14, 2011, 03:43:52 PM »

The developer of Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is set to open another studio in Ontario.

Silicon Knights has announced that they are planning to open a new development studio in Hamilton, Ontario. The studio plans to open in about six months. Although no word was given if any Nintendo products were planned for development there, the company has long said they would be open to developing a Wii game if the right idea came along.

Silicon Knights is currently developing X-Men Destiny, the release details for which have yet to be revealed. The last title the developer completed for a Nintendo platform was Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes in 2004.

Do they really need a second studio? They've made 3 games in the last 10 years, it's not like they need more than 1 studio. If this gets more people employed, then good for them anyways.

They could use the second studio to make smaller, more focused games as a break from/to help pay for their big epic projects.

Silicon Knights is developing an X-Men game?  How did this happen?  Is SK so hurting for cash they've had to start taking on licensed games?

And I guess this means Eternal Darkness 2 for Wii is not in development.  Bummer.

ST. CATHARINES — St. Catharines video game producer Silicon Knights is taking its idea for a new digital media institute down the QEW to Hamilton after ongoing talks with Brock University stalled, the company's founder says.

Silicon Knights, McMaster University, Mohawk College and the Art Gallery of Ontario announced late last week they're partnering on a research institute that will focus on the growing electronic gaming industry.

The $11-million joint venture, dubbed Eight: The Hamilton Institute for Digital Media, is expected to open its doors next year at McMaster Innovation Park in Hamilton.

"It's the first of its kind anywhere that I know of," Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack said Monday. "It's a pure integration, so it's going to be able to create jobs, it's going to be able to forward academic research … It's really the best of both worlds."

Also did you guys know that Nintendo still owns part of Silicon Knights? They should make them make that sequel to Eternal Darkness so that they atleast release something of worth in the next few years (Xmen game didn't look so hot last time I saw it)

I can't find anything that supports that. Even if they do, the percentage they own would be minuscule. Since Nintendo owns the Eternal Darkness IP, I don't think they care about it since they haven't done anything with it since the first game.

Nintendo would have to have a very significant (if not majority) percentage of shares in Silicon Knights to have any real influence upon new projects.  I doubt Nintendo has the likely 30-40 share percentage that they would need for influence, let alone the 51% they would have to have to "force" Silicon Knights to make an Eternal Darkness 2 against their wishes.
