TalkBack / RE:TIME Magazine Hands-On With Wii
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:17:49 PM »
Interesting that the first magazine they give a hands on to (UbiSoft gave an approved hands on to GI) was Time.  It really does fit in with their "growing the industry" rhetoric.

Simply put, this HAD to happen.

Oh joystiq, you've got the journalism ethics of a blog (well it is one) but somehow the creditability of an actual gaming news site.

5929
In case people don't know, gamespot will be streaming lo-res for non-subscribers.  I fully expect an Internet explosion that Wii and the FHC were only a precursor for, or hope for one.

1 day 13 hours and 15 minutes.

Even with this Time issue, Nintendo is still remarkably good at keeping stuff under-wraps.  For example, developers know what the final feature is, so do some journalists, but we've been kept in the dark.

I don't think Wario Ware was a shock by any means.  If I recall there is a question from the "emergency" controller unveiled  mailbag that asks "so WarioWare at launch?"
The Tennis game was a no-brainer.

Really, this will be a huge event, so let's not go crazy till after we hear it all.

The elebits are really cute.  How long till there are plush versions available in ever train station across Japan?

I know, but making it in first person would be a unique perspective that the Wii could do like no other game before it.

I suppose, but it would take something from the experience, considering your view of the action depends on where your character is standing.

The first person makes it hard, split screen could be confusing.
I could see doing co-op doubles on LAN or WiFi connection; but any sort of split screen could be pretty difficult to follow.

I only spent a few minutes so they look kinda flat.

Traditional SHUMP, except you have more of a 45 degree angle view.  It lets you see the horizon, it also allows the game to move up and down as well as left to right.

This game would be controlled by the FHC (move it up/down to go to a higher/lower plane, left/right to move left/right, pull back on the controller to slow down or push forward to go faster).  The face button is weapon change and the bottom button is fire.

First person tennis game.  You move your player with the nunchauk, and use its tilt sensor to dive.  You control your swing with the FHC.  It matches the tilt of the controller (like guns in Red Steel) to determine the angle of the racquet, the velocity of your swing to determine power, then position of the FHC relative to a start to determine position of the racquet when you swing.

You COULD do two player split screen, but LAN/Internet play would be better suited.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Pre-order?
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:51:14 PM »
I got lucky on my DS.  I went to circuit city at noon (on launch day) and for some reason one had fallen off the pallet they used to stock.  So while the big display they had up was empty, one was still sitting behind the counter.

No one thought to ask.

I'm going to get her Mario Kart, maybe show her brain age when I go home from school.
I think they need more "non-games" that target specific demographics.  I don't care if they put out Nintendcats or heck Nintendferrits, she isn't going to play Metroid Primer Hunters.

I think a good strategy would be to make "non-games" that have elements from more "game-like" products.  The goal being to ease people into "real games."

I think it's pretty lame. Besides looking like a typo, which probably doesn't really matter to the text messaging crowd, the sound "wee" sounds small and insignificant. Are they trying to play off "we" as in "all us players"? Or maybe they're trying to piss off the French and misspell "Oui."

Well someone got it.

It could be releasing later on Wii, but if not that means the Wii is coming out sooner then expected.

That or you'll be able to look at your copy of Blitz for a month.

Mad Maestro: Wii!

5947
You know, she asked for a DS last year (Nintendogs).  It is the first (and only) video game machine she has ever owned.  She plays Animal Crossing online, and steals my villagers (letters to her often read something like "GIVE ME BACK PUDGY! ").

That stuff they feed us about "avenues to girl gamers" isn't total BS, just like 60%.  I mean, yes she owns a pink DS, and she bought one additional game.  But that's all she owns.  If "opening" is selling 2 game carts then I guess mission accomplished.  I would think they would have higher aspirations.

I really hope my brother asks.  I already have the email to our father in mind.  I'm pretty sure I will squeeze more Wii jokes in then in all the IGN-blogs combined.  Hey, I know he hasn't heard them.

If it was a cooking sim, I doubt they would feel inclined to apologize.
That said, today was the first work day they didn't update the Wii channel in a week or two.  Odds are they did have a story planned.  I wouldn't think Mario.  I would think Nintendo would want to save that salvo for their conference.

Is they fact they are letting so much out, so close, mean they don't feel like having a ton of surprises or does it mean they have more coming that are even more Earth shattering?

Nintendo might be the only company in the world people apply reverse psychology to.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What Nintendo must avoid at the Wii launch...
« on: May 02, 2006, 08:59:06 PM »
Nintendo insists there will be no droughts, and they accept that the premature deaths of the N64 and the GC are on their hands.  The drought of the DS was "okay" simply because the PSP managed an even more epic drought.  They wont be so lucky here.

I want to trust them that the drought days are over; they also said this around GC launch time.  They've got some trust to earn back...says the guy with a Tingle avatar.

Pennant Chase was getting fairly high praise, and it was really close to completeion.  They had already had a party to show it off.

I have a hard time beileving they would have sunk all that money into it just to kill it after it was almost done.  Wii port seems likely.
