Q&A with Peter Dille, senior vice present of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc.

Q. The DS is currently getting all of the buzz and hype, what do you think Sony can do to get people talking more about the PSP?

A. In North America, the PSP has outsold all next-generation handhelds since we launched in March 2005, with more than 4.7 million units sold. In May, according to NPD data, the PSP was the top-selling portable handheld at nearly 160,000 units. We're pleased with the success the PSP has achieved, and the next step is to build on that success with our core gaming audience to reach a wider mass market audience. One key finding in our market research is that many consumers don't understand everything the PSP can do. So starting this summer, we're embarking on a major marketing campaign to educate consumers about the multi-functionality of the PSP beyond gaming. It's a powerful device in a portable package, and this effort will help us continue the momentum that made PSP the No. 1 selling system in its class last year.

I love how they dont mention the NPD data that shows their decline.

I also love how they think the focus on games (since when?) is their problem. It's the exact opposite, morons!

Wow. Just when you thought the PSP's tie-in ratio couldn't go any lower, this happens..

Didn't they start out trying to market the PSP as a multi-functional gadget?  Then they tried pushing it as a gaming machine (It's like carpet you play outside)... now they're back to the multi-function thing.

I don't think it's a good idea to tell them that the PSP can't play PS2 games.

It's called "creative classification" and Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) cites it as one of the most commonly used weasel tricks.

Note:

...and this effort will help us continue the momentum that made PSP the No. 1 selling system in its class last year.

They can call the PSP the number one selling system because they've isolated it to a "class" and they when they say "next gen", they don't count the DS because "next gen" is, once again, creative classification.

Remember when McDonalds had "Lobster Roll Sandwiches"? Remember how the ad campaign called it "Honest to goodness lobster"?

Yeah, it was CC. That was likely made from the same stuff as the imitation crab meat.

It's the same BS Sony has pulled for years: twist and mangle the truth so that even the worst situations sound like they're turning out in Sony's favor.

Don't be surprised if they use the PS3's classification as a "computer" to call it "the best selling item of its class!" or some other such hogsh*t.

But it doesn't matter. At some point, they won't be able to lie their way out of a reality when the PS3 flops and Sony is forced to file chapter 11.

Seriously, if BluRay manages to sink the PS3 (and all indications suggest that it will), then Sony has run out of options.

I'd love to see an interviewer ask a Sony rep why Sony had to borrow $700 million to manufacture the PS3. Then, when they put the Sony spin on it, saying that it was a "good market for borrowing", ask why Nintendo didn't borrow money to manufacture the Wii if the market was supposedly so good.

Man, I have a list of questions I'd ask them. I'm glad the DS is doing so insanely well. I don't think I could have dealt with it if Sony's tactics of lies and spin won them the handheld console market.

Something interesting is that New Super Mario Bros is on track to outsell Super Mario World.

This is a new golden era in gaming folks!

Oh yeah, new Australian weekly sales chart is out

Good to see more DS games, but i'd rather people just kept buying New SMB and Brain Age instead. This does send a good message to third parties though.

With all due respect to Nintendo, they have chosen a path that vastly differs from ours. The PS3 focuses on cutting edge technology for games and for multimedia; our Cell processor and Blu-Ray drive make the PS3 the most advanced of all the consoles in the upcoming generation. The "Wii", on the other hand, while capable enough to cater to its niche market, lags behind technologically. As you may know, the "Wii" is not capable of rendering High Definition textures, due to its lack of processing power. Some may even call it outdated when comparing it to our PS3. Taking this into mind, our manufacturing costs are sure to be higher than the competition. Since the environment is currently conducive to borrowing, we decided to take a small loan in order to ensure that the PS3 is ready on time. Furthermore, the people who will directly benefit from this loan are our loyal consumers. They will be able to get the PS3 and its second-to-none features for a low price this autumn. Our retail price is, dare I say, a bargain for anyone who buys it, especially considering the fact that some Blu-Ray players retail for more themselves. It is obvious that this strategy will pay dividends come the PS3 launch.

I should be hired by Sony
