Having played Color Splash, I'm amazed by how (1) It looks very, very similar graphically to Color Splash, and (2) Thank the gods there are no battle cards.

Everything about Color Splash, from the mini games, the bosses, the writing, the set pieces, were all very very good.   It's just that the card system was obscene--  unless you looked at a faq, it was hard to predict what cards you would need for a particular battle or set of battles, and you had a very limited inventory for cards.   Made battles very annoying.

So why isn't anyone commenting on the graphics?   Cuz these look like different textures.   Not uprez-ed.   Completely redone.

Is this an HD remake?  Or HD remaster?

Okay, that was a communications major, which is truly nothing.  I remember that episode.

As as for 8, well, you had a gunblade, what could go wrong?

It'll be interesting to see how they handle the Bowser battles where you had to turn the DS into a book orientation.   And for the love of all that is holy, I hope they get rid of the blowing.   I was playing while waiting in  line at a local burger place and that came up....and I had to act all cool, just happen to bring the DS to my face, and blew into it all non-chalantly, as if I was blowing off dust or something.   So embarassing!

Did All Star Racing in the last gen do well enough to warrant making another?    Obviously it can't touch MK numbers, even being multi-console, but is is good enough?

Uh, I think it should be noted that this does not have an internal battery-- you need to plug the usb cable into an outlet.   Does it actually include the cable?  The USB-C cable?   Because I'm guessing not.

Now, I don't HATE giving Nintendo money---I got the $80 Nintendo dock, after all-- but it seems a better product than this might be the Hori compact folding Switch stand, for just $13.  Does pretty much the same thing, but more portable.   Also doubles as a great phone or tablet stand.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What's going on with 3DS sales?
« on: July 01, 2017, 01:36:42 PM »
So basically, there is weirdness with the manufacturing of 3DS screens.   There are 2 kinds of screens you can get with your 3DS, particularly the New 3DS XL.   You may get an IPS screen, which are brighter and don't "get fuzzy" when you look at the screen from an angle.   Or you may get a TN screen, which are oh-so-slightly dimmer, have less contrast, and "get fuzzy" when you look at it at an angle.

There has been A LOT of speculation about which New 3DS XL models have which screen, whether Special Editions, the Red, the Black, which production run, etc... but no one has found a reliable or consistent pattern.   We do know that your a more likely to get the top screen as IPS and bottom screen as TN, rather than both screens being IPS (or "Dual IPS") which is very rare and, if you look on ebay, goes at a premium.   And of course, you are MOST LIKELY if you by a New 3DS XL today to get both the top screen and bottom screen as TN ("Dual TN")

I also have to wonder how big an impact all the IPS screen hunting is having on sales.   It's hard to figure out just how many units circulate because of this stuff, but from what I hear, the buy-return-buy-return cycle has got to push units off shelves.   I'm guessing that's the reason why in the US the supply of used New 3DS XL's, especially special editions, are suprisingly high--  people selling off units that they discovered are dual TN's or something.

How do you do the manual mapping on the Switch?

Touch screen or using the controller?

Oh, it's 3DS!   Actually, that is great news, perfect fit.  Ignore my previous comment :-)

Actually, you bring up a really good point.   There are lots of 3DS franchises (Monster Hunter, Mario/Luigi, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem) that would do well on the Switch and its hard to foresee any significant problems going over to that platform.

But I love Etrian Odyssey.   LOVE.   I've played all 3 DS games, IV, both of the 3DS remakes, and Etrian Mystery Dungeon, and the Persona Q game.   But how do you do this kind of game on 1 screen to make it as good as its implementation on a dual screen device?  I just don't see it, and I worry that when the 3DS finally dies, it'll take Etrian with it.

So its Etrian and....oh I don't know, maybe the Art Academy games as well?   Because the Switch doesn't have a stylus.  Which sucks, because I also enjoy those games, and my daughters adore the Disney game that came out last year.

Everyone here is way too harsh on Nintendo handing over Metroid to another developer.   Remember Other M?  Oh, wait.  Ugh.  Other M.   I just shuddered the same way Homer Simpson shudders at Selma's personal hygiene.

At first blush, the art style looks somewhat similar to BOTW-- not identical, but similar enough for me to guess that its running on the same engine as BOTW.

With that said, one of the few nitpicks I had with Chronicles X was that its systems were too various and too complicated, and not in a particularly transparent or intuitive way.   In terms of complexity, I think the first Xenoblade was my limit for JRPG systems, and the whole color of arts/topple/etc. thing made much more sense than the expanded version in Chronicles X.

I also hope that they tone down items you find in the overworld, and make the crafting much more understandable.   In BOTW, most of the crafting/cooking made actual sense, and it was far better to actual see a cricket or a radish flower and then to grab it.   No more of these random blue dots in the landscape.

I find it very disappointing that Nintendo is releasing this, despite the horrors that were unleashed by Slade Wilson in Starling City.   When will humanity learn that some powers were just not meant for man?

Oh, and the Switch commercial where you have 2 people sitting on a plane, in coach, playing Switch together?  I call BS.   The problem lies with the kickstand, which doesn't go too far back so when you put it down on a surface that's close to your waist (i.e. tray table), it doesn't tile back enough for you to comfortably see the screen.  That is, unless, you are very short, like under 5 feet.

Couple of my impressions:

1.   Local Multiplayer, split screen, make this a must have for family trips.   Basically justifies buying Mario Kart 8 again, but in the mean time, Fast Racing does the trick.   Shinen really nailed that down, I hope MK8's split screen is as beautiful and fast, with no frame drops.

2.   I kinda wish the screen was bigger.  I'm wondering what kind of future hardware revisions they might have.   Maybe 10-inch screen, a sort of Switch XL?  I'd pay for that.   Might even still fit in the same dock.

3.   I don't know whether this is the switch, my Yamaha AV receiver, or magic fairies, but it seems that half the time I put my Switch in the dock, it turns on my AV receiver and TV.  Weird.  Basically, my setup is Switch Dock ->AV Receiver (Yamaha)->TV (Lg).   My AV receiver is never really off, it's just "asleep," but it never "wakes up" when I turn on the Wii U, Wii, Game Cube, PS4, PS3, or any of the stuff that's hooked up to it.  But half the time, when I dock the Switch, it all comes to life.   Don't know why it only does it part of the time.  Still trying to figure it out.

If you really want to be surprised and just incredibly impressed, get a friend, put your switch up on a kitchen table, and try the SPLIT SCREEN MULTIPLAYER.

Ridiculous.   No noticeable lag, beautiful, split screen.

About 4-5 hours in, great game.   I think that, much like the Switch itself, BOTW is an evolution of the Zelda game informed by all the best parts of the last...oh, 4 console Zeldas.   Improved implementation of Twilight Princess overworld, improved implementation of crafting from Skyward Sword,  improved version of combat from Wind Waker.   They got rid of the whole "boring town in the beginning" problem that plagued both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.   Played the first 3 hours in 1 session on the TV, just could not stop myself.   Too much fun, and so perfectly paced.

The open world aspect reminds me of all the wonderous parts of Xenoblade Chronicles.

I think, if anything, this proves that the Zelda team has NOT been asleep at the wheel.  They've been taking notes.

And btw, one of the best parts of this game, little thing, but still remarkable?   Click down once on the left stick to crouch, click again to stand up.   I HATE it on other 3rd person action games when you have to HOLD DOWN the left stick to crouch.   So dumb.  This is much nicer.  Can't believe no one has thought of it yet.

But hey, it's better than vita memory sticks, eh?

Well, granted,  Virtual Console titles almost NEVER go on sale.    I think the only publisher that ever does is, actually, Capcom.  And even then they are not particularly steep discounts.

I mean, is this a philosophical thing with Nintendo?   Because when Sony puts out some crappy arcade ports of Guerrilla War and Ikari Warrirors on sale for 99 cents, well, I can't click "add to cart" FAST ENOUGH.

I still don't know why Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn isn't on there yet.   They've got to put it up there when Fates comes out.   We're talking about a Wii game that Gamestop charges, like over $50 used.  Without the box or manual.   And still, no Gamestop within my state has it in stock.

The Mahi Mahi resort does look cool, especially it is pretty blatantly based on the Aulani Resort in Hawaii, an EXTREMELY popular resort for Japanese tourists with kids.
