TalkBack / Re: Third Parties Unable to Offer Free Software on 3DS eShop

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has spoken on several occasions about dangers of lowering the value of software, particularly naming mobile and social platforms. Games on such platforms are typically priced much lower than on Nintendo systems, even free, though quality often suffers.

But what if the quality of the software is low?  I'd say Flashlight is worth MAYBE a quarter at most.  It's definitely not worth $2.  Seriously, go to the eShop and look at the screenshots for it.  You have a menu and two solid-color blank screens.  Because that's all it is.  I don't need to spend $2 for blank screens.  Hell, I could spend a few hours and program a homebrew version of Flashlight for my PSP if it was absolutely vital for me to have such functionality on a portable gaming device.

I'd like to know what Iwata thinks about overcharging for horseshit software.

Too bad Flipnote Studio isn't available for 3DS.

...why isn't it available?

I'm going to be very surprised if Minish Cap (or at least A Link to the Past) isn't on the final roster.

Me too Straw. I have only gotten 2 StreetPasses since I got my 3DS at launch, so I have to use coins to buy heroes and they pretty much suck.
To be fair, none of the streetpass heroes I've gotten have been any better than the ones I bought with coins.

Given the right kind of game, DLC could be a good fit. Brawl is the right kind of game. So is Mario Kart.

Wii Music.  Very few of its songs interest me, and the ability to get more would have been a great improvement.

When I heard Burn the Rope was coming, I thought it was talking about this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRLw61_50SI

Totally not the same game.

It does seem a bit odd that they turned him into Tanuki Mario when all it really gives him is a dumbed down version of Raccoon Mario.  Hell, he even changes by grabbing a leaf, not the full suit.  Oh well, it's not like Nintendo ever really cared about continuity when it comes to stuff like that.

Either way, I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

I do have one question, though...  Is there any reason they don't provide screenshots in MPO format so they can be viewed in 3D on the 3DS browser?

Remember, these are NES Virtual Console titles... NES games aren't normally part of the 3DS VC lineup-- they're otherwise only available on 3DS as 3D Classics. The logical conclusion is that these are upcoming 3D Classics titles that aren't ready yet, and the updates will simply be the completed 3D Classics releases.
I thought about that, but they're clearly distinguishing them as Virtual Console versions, not 3D Classics.  Not to mention the game selection - how do you add depth to Donkey Kong Jr.?

Plus, it looks like my guess was right on the money according to another article that recently went up - http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27292

There's one part that has me curious...

"These games...are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost."

I wonder what they mean by updated versions.  I can easily see them releasing the games early with missing VC functionality (such as save states, etc.) that would be incorporated when the full version goes retail.  They don't mention updates anywhere else, though, so it's hard to say what they'll do.

I guess I'm lucky that I live in WA and will be going to PAX later in August.  I'm sure there'll be enough 3DS owning nerds there that I'll be able to complete mine.

Alternatively, I could probably try Gamestop.  The staff all had their 3DS systems with them when I went to get OoT3D and I was able to get some StreetPass tags in the process.  I could probably get some Pokemon trades as well if they aren't too busy.

As for it being BS, at least it's better than it was in all the Game Boy iterations of the game where getting them all not only required knowing someone else who had the system and the other color of the game, but one of you needed a link cable as well.  I dunno, maybe it just doesn't bother me as much because Red was the only game I actually played.

It's free, it's a novelty, I'm not going to complain about it.

Do I think it could be better?  Yes.
Did I get my money's worth?  Yes.

I assume they'd leave in the hard mode unlockable for collecting medals on every stage, but now that there are two sets of medals to collect, I wonder if one set unlocks something else...

Aren't the top 10 included in the top 25?  If they are, saying 18 out of 25 would be counting five of them twice.

#9 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Honorable mention - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, "A better game than its predecessors on the same handheld"

Does not compute.  How does a game that's better than its predecessors not make the list but one of its predecessors does?

I thought they WERE out after 2 days.

"Due to strong demand and technical issues, we are extending this offer. Members who register the game by midnight, Pacific Time on Monday June 20, 2011 will receive the soundtrack CD."

I suppose vague wording could be to blame here, considering it says people who register before then will receive it, so I suppose it could be that people who registered later may receive it.

43
I wonder if there's any chance they'll release a demo for the 3DS version...

There are different ways of doing dynamic music changes.  In the case of Super Mario Galaxy, most of it involved multiple tracks playing at once and then crossfading between them or increasing the volume of certain parts as necessary.

In the case of Ocarina of Time's Hyrule Field, there were actually a number of 8-bar patterns that would be played based on context, but it wouldn't play a new one until after the currently playing pattern was finished.  I've seen this technique used in Sonic Heroes' Mystic Mansion where it would change which pattern was playing based on what part of the stage you're in, so doing it with streaming audio wouldn't be a problem either.

X2 and 3 on the other hand, mainly used traditional sprites-- only using those chips for minimal special effects, so programming for that is far less complex and isn't  likely to be much of an issue.

You can't really call the final bosses of the games "minimal special effects".

I can't find "hidden photo" on my 3DS eShop....
anybody know why?

I checked and the following titles are not in the eShop:

Gold Fever (Nintendo eShop, Nintendo DSiWare)
Zimo: Mahjong Fanatic (Nintendo eShop, Nintendo DSiWare)
Hidden Photo (Nintendo eShop, Nintendo DSiWare)
Beach Party Craze (Nintendo eShop,Nintendo DSiWare)

That's strange.  I just did a search for "hidden" and "Hidden Photo" was the first result, with "Hot and Cold: A 3D Hidden Object Adventure" being the second.

@KDR_11k - Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo remembers the Super Game Boy ever existed.  GBC, GBA and the GB Player add-on for GCN didn't support their custom color schemes or enhancements either.  Sucks, too, because I'd love to be able to customize my color palettes again like I could with the SGB.

@Enner - X4 was a PlayStation game, that's never coming to Virtual Console.  Personally I'd say just get the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and the Mega Man X Collection.  You can get the two combined for $40 used on Amazon while it'd cost $30 for the NES games alone on Virtual Console, assuming they were all available.

While there are some neat features there, I think it's pretty lame that you can't play them with the Game Boy Color palettes.

Or hell, since the Game Boy didn't have two screens, they could have used the touch screen as a palette customizer like you could do on the Super Game Boy.
