Three astronauts embark on a mission to find fruit. As you do.

Pikmin 3 will launch in Europe on July 26, after the July 13 release in Japan and ahead of the August 4 release in North America.

In addition to this release date news, Nintendo revealed several new details about the game's story, characters and features. The three playable characters are Alph, Brittany and their captain, Charlie, who crash-landed on this mysterious planet while on a mission. Their goal is to scavenge and harvest fruit for survival, and they enlist the help of the indigenous Pikmin to do so.

In terms of gameplay features, it has been confirmed that Pikmin 3 will have an unlimited number of days, similar to Pikmin 2, but players will be able to revert back to any previous day they have already completed, if they decide they want to start fresh and undo mistakes.

The game will also support three control schemes: the Wii U GamePad, the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and the Wii U Pro Controller. While using the GamePad control scheme, the screen displays the KoPod, which serves as an information terminal and map. Players can tap on specific points on the map to have the character they are currently controlling move to that position automatically.

The Japanese release date is July 13, not August 11.

Can't wait. We'll be playing it no time. The plants in the game look better every time we see it. Not so sure about the ground textures though.

I noticed Iwata said with the Gamepad it will control like the GameCube version. Hopefully that means they did away with the dumb E3 set up from last year. They used the Gamepad's gyro thingy to control the marker, no one liked it. Wiimote and nunchuk all the way for me.

Interesting that there is no Olimar but then it would be kind of a stretch to keep coming up with reasons for him to visit the Pikmin planet.

I like how there are multiple control schemes.  I really figured they would shoehorn some crappy gimmick controls when Pikmin games already exist with a control scheme I like.

I noticed the rock Pikmin get embedded in the ground when rolled over by an enemy instead of turning into ghosts.

I'm hoping Olimar is in the game in a Heart of Darkness way. They already went there a bit with Louie in Pikmin 2.

Also, disappointing that fruit will be replacing objects.
