Last year, I ordered a shelf from Amazon. While I was putting it together, I noticed I was missing a piece. I looked at the item’s reviews and others encountered the same issue. No big deal. I contacted Amazon customer service, and the rep had another shelf shipped to me which I thought was excessive. I was only missing the one piece, and I didn’t need nor have space for another shelf.
A little later, I noticed the rep actually ordered another shelf for me so I was charged another ~$150. Okay, still no big deal. I contacted customer service again. A different rep said they couldn’t just send the missing piece to me. Once the second shelf arrived, I could get the piece I needed then return the one of the shelves. The box was particularly heavy, unwieldy, and notably unable to fit in my car. There would have been no way for me to return this shelf in my own, and due to the pandemic, it was chaos with pickups of large items. The first rep didn’t explain why she was sending the second shelf or that I would be charged for it which I was actually annoyed about. The second rep canceled the order and added a partial refund on the first shelf as a credit/gift card on my account.
What am I confessing? Well...
Toward the end of the chat, I found the missing piece under some of the shelf’s packaging (i.e. bags, styrofoam etc). By then, the rep already offered the partial refund except I couldn’t tell her not to give me the credit/gift card without admitting what a stupid idiot I was.
