Yep, 3DS XL surpassed the Vita's lifetime sales as expected this week.  Poor Vita.  It really needs Sony to actually give it a little help.

Not much Sony can really do now.  They don't have any first or second party series that a Vita version could be a killer app in Japan.  They can't afford to lower the price or add PSP backward compatibility since those decisions are too expensive.  And Nintendo has already locked up the biggest third party series like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest.

All of the Vita's problems needed to be figured out before Sony even launched the system.  The 3DS had problems in it's early months but Nintendo at least had backup plans like the ability to drop the price and had major games like Mario Kart 7 and Mario 3D Land in development.  Sony pretty much just shipped it out and never bothered to create a Plan B just incase.

Nintendo was making a profit off each 3DS sold versus Sony who's said to be just breaking even on the Vita.  That gave Nintendo a little more room to bite the bullet.  Iwata even said awhile ago in one of those investors meetings that because of all the money they made off the DS and Wii, it'd allow them to make more expensive decisions reguarding the 3DS and Wii U.

Sony on the other hand is still losing billions each year because the overall company is a total mess making it much harder for the company to do a huge price cut like Nintendo could.

But to have any hope of ever turning a profit on the system it needs to gain enough of a user base for publishers to consider it a viable platform. They can either cut the price or give up on it completely.

3DS is probably going to outsell the PS3 in Japan by the new year.

at this rate, 3DS will outsell PS3 before the first full week of December is over.

That's why I honestly expect Sony to give up on the system next year.  If they feel cutting the price would cost them too much to do, combined with the fact they have literally no major third party support with a userbase that won't even be at 5 million by Spring 2013, I don't see any reason for Sony to even try to keep it alive.

I predict Sony will cut all internal support and try to focus all their remaining resources on the PS4.  The system will probably still get some third party niche games in Japan after and limp around in that market for another few years but it'll probably be non-existent in the West by early 2014.

Well from what I hear, Sony still makes a good bit of money from the PSP which can supplement the Vita a little bit.  I still think they will stick with it for the long haul.  Sony has always been stubborn with keeping with their products.  They do need to show it a bit more love though.  A price drop would probably get me to bite.  I already have an instant game collection with PS Plus so I'm good to go there and I'm willing to pick up a lot of PSP games for it when I get it.

I think they could have dropped it to $200 and it still would have had a slight profit margin. But I guess they found it more beneficial in the long run to drop it as drastically as they had.

they would have been fine if they had just introduced it at the expected price of $199.99.
That would have been a little higher than some wanted to pay and right where the rest of us expected it to be.

They overshot @ $250 and Sony was silly to replace the product in that price point, even if they feel the Vita was worth the price.

Wii U sold 400K in its first week, Wii sold 300K that week, 3DS sold 250K, DS sold 275K (Reggie said DS sold higher due to all the sales from retailers). Reggie also said the 3DS has sold 6 million in the US, 1 million more than the DS at this same point in its lifespan. Reggie also said they would have sold more Wii U's if they were able to re-stock it faster.

So 400k Wii U systems sold, but the NintendoLand Miiverse group is only what, 60k? That's only 15%.

If you figure more than half the systems were the Black and Nintendoland came predundled, plus a percentage of those are being held for Christmas or reselling, Then what, only 25-30% of new Wii U owners are taking their systems online? Sheesh!

My understanding though is that the first two DS games were simply remakes of the GBA games. Is that incorrect?
