Nintendo Gaming / Wii U Gamepad A button not working (updated 1/18/2016)
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:26:38 AM »
So... this just happened.

I play my Wii U pretty regularly, and I've been playing it pretty much daily (and for fairly long sessions) since Xenoblade X came out. Today everything seemed fine, played normally. Then I boot up my system much later for another session and the A button isn't responsive at all now!  I checked Nintendo's support website for troubleshooting, I tried rebooting my system a couple times, nothing. It's a three year old system and I've never once had an issue with it, so this really bugs me.

I do plan on calling Nintendo tomorrow, but I was curious if anyone else has had this problem? I've never had an issue with a Nintendo product like this before, and I wanted to know what experience others have had. Were you able to fix it without having to send your Gamepad in? I'm a little worried about doing that, and I don't want Nintendo to send me something refurbished should it come down to that (and more importantly end up paying for something refurbished when I sent my own controller in for repairs).

Thanks!

EDIT: Seems the problem fixed itself before I was about to call Nintendo. Hopefully it stays that way. I'm still not even sure what happened or why it was unresponsive in the first place. The controller is clean, and the button felt like it pressed normally.

Update 01/18/2016: Sooo it's happening on and off now. For whatever reason the A button would stop responding when headphones were plugged in sometimes, and NOW the button randomly gave out during gameplay. Currently, it's not working, but I assume it'll start again after I lay off the gamepad for a bit, but I otherwise got a few days out of it again after that first time. I'm still not sure why this is happening, or if it's just simple wear and tear (it being the most used button across most games I play and all), but it's kind of annoying since I don't think I've had a controller do this to me before.

Not really looking forward to making that phone call...

Out of curiosity, have you experienced any lag input with the Wii-U version of Mario 64? I'd seen at least one person on another forum complain that there appeared to be some slight lag on the Wii-U version, but not the Wii version, which has made me a bit hesitant about upgrading.

I loved Super Mario Sunshine, and I don't understand the hate it gets either. I really loved the world and how much more connected the entirety of Isle Delfino was, compared to other games. And, unlike Peach's Castle in 64, it's not empty and lonely. While, I guess, that's sort of the point of 64 in a sense, it's still kind of dull compared to how lively and fun exploring just the main hub of Sunshine is. And, hell, FLUDD is actually fun and useful. It never felt clunky or tacked on (though its reappearance in Brawl is another story...).

Of course, the game isn't without its frustrating moments (but what platformer isn't?) and it baffles me that they never enabled Yoshi to swim, but Sunshine was fun from beginning to end for me.

I kind of don't understand this move. Shouldn't they want to push the Wii U more and not its predecessor? Maybe emphasize the fact that the Wii U backwards compatible with Wii games (including the ones being repackaged in the "Nintendo Selects" line) and Wii hardware, and that it's an overall more "complete" system? I can see the Wii Mini is more affordable and everything, but I imagine there's enough brand confusion already.

Darn, I can't edit directly.

TalkBack / Re: Sonic Lost World Sells Poorly in Japan
« on: October 31, 2013, 03:52:08 PM »
Sonic really never does well in Japan. While the franchise probably doesn't have the terrible reputation Western territories (where, ironically, Sonic does much better overall) invented for it, but Sonic was never anywhere near as big in Japan. I wouldn't see this as "a nail in the coffin," but that's me.

TalkBack / Re: Sonic and the Story of a Franchise Reborn
« on: October 16, 2013, 01:25:00 PM »
Sonic may be "back on the gaming radar" but critics will continue to beat the dead horse over Sonic having a couple mediocre games and one really bad title for as long as it's still running. I won't be at all surprised if reviews for Lost World open up with how Sonic games haven't been good in years (because supposedly time stopped after 2006 when it comes to Sonic). I'm personally sick of Sonic constantly being a punching bag for critics who think they're being clever by constantly bringing up one bad title. I don't see any other franchise get this kind of treatment.

SEGA definitely has tried to be more watchful and protective of the brand though. Between actually giving the developers time to work on titles (which was quite a rarity in the past) to being more actively involved in the production of the comic series and actually producing merchandise (this was a rarity when I was a kid). It definitely is a revival of sorts, though it started about five years ago, despite what some people like to say.

TalkBack / Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Delayed to 2014
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:46:44 PM »
Bummer, Tropical Freeze would've been a great title to see for Christmas, and likely would've helped push sales a bit.

Still, I don't want to buy into all the "doom and gloom" people are saying about the Wii-U. Yeah, it's not doing great right now, and Nintendo has made some bad, perhaps costly, decisions, but I still want to remain optimistic with what's coming soon and on the horizon. That said, it is a shame Nintendo is flailing around a bit this generation.

Sonic was pretty much the one character I was hoping to come back when Mega Man showed his face back at E3. While I didn't totally doubt he'd return, given Nintendo and SEGA being buds nowadays and SEGA and Capcom forming a friendship (the Archie comics crossover was their idea, after all), it's always nice to get a confirmation.

Now that Sonic's back, I'm a little more interested in what newcomers Nintendo has planned instead of just returning fighters.

Kinda bummed the ability to use the Wii menu on the Gamepad doesn't allow me to use the controls. While I get the logic behind it, it'd be nice for games like Xenoblade or basically anything that can use the Classic Controller (being that the face buttons are the same and all).

I'd like to try out the screengrab feature too once I figure out how it works...

11
Definitely getting hyped for this. Mega Man seems like a pretty sensible inclusion too, I'd be interested in seeing how all those Robot Masters powers work (it seems like he has quite a few options). I do hope Sonic makes the cut again this go around, especially with SEGA and Nintendo being pretty tight at the moment, and even SEGA and Capcom are getting a little buddy-buddy ("Worlds Collide" in Archie Comics anyone?), so why not give everyone a chance to pit the Blue Blur against the Blue Bomber?

Damn, Nintendo's pulling out almost every IP all at once suddenly. Didn't expect that.

I'm a little confused by some of the comments that say they wish Retro wasn't working on this game... wasn't the last DKC a good game? Why wouldn't want the studio to continue that?

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Virtual Console Launch Lineup Announced
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:53:04 PM »
Excuse my ignorance, but I haven't been following this very closely...If you already own these on the Wii, can you just transfer them to Wii U and use them on the Wii U Virtual Console (i.e. use them on the gamepad, etc.)? I love Kirby's Adventure and everything, but I'm not really interested in double-dipping if that's not the case. I'd sooner wait for some new releases that Nintendo ignored for VC the first time around.

TalkBack / Re: Narrowly Avoiding Pokémon Fever
« on: September 25, 2012, 04:03:43 AM »
Heh, I guess I was in the perfect age bracket to get sucked into "Pokémon fever" back in the day; it was the tail-end of elementary school for me, so as a kid it was REALLY easy to get sucked into. I sorta felt I outgrew it when I started high school. The third generation of games didn't really interest me, and the anime introduced characters I never had much interest in at the time. But then I hit college and Diamond came out, and started me back into the craze again, and I've never looked back.

I guess what's kept me playing more than anything over the last five years or so (and I was foaming at the mouth when Gold/Silver remakes were announced; even when my interest waned, the second generation was still the best the series ever was to me... still is), is just how simple and fun the games are. Even if it's largely the same game every time with a little twist or new add-on (you mentioned Mario), something about starting a new adventure fresh, exploring a new region, taking down a local crime syndicate hellbent on world domination, and meeting (and possibly reuniting) with friends new and old, just makes me excited to play them every time. There might be a bit of a nostalgia attachment to the franchise, but the games themselves have never totally bored me. I'm looking forward to B2/W2 to continue the story of the first games and see what changes have occurred in the region since the end of the first set of Black and White.

Also, I know it's nitpicky and all, but I wouldn't say Black 2/White 2 are the first direct sequels in the franchise. Gold/Silver were that to the original games, as the story takes place three years following the defeat of Team Rocket and largely follows up with the organization trying to rebuild itself on a massive scale. And then there's all the changes that happen in Kanto during that time. I guess B2/W2 just get the honor, because it's the first main series game to have a numbered sequel though. I appreciate your perspective though, and it should be interesting to read a review from someone who's not as into the games as others here.

Guys it isn't like this will be the last pokemon given over Wi-Fi for Heart Gold and Soul Silver.I'm sure Celebi will be given out at some point.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to picking up Mew myself. I've never owned a legit one before. Celebi will probably be announced at some point; it has to. How else are players going to unlock the Giovanni event? Though, speaking of which, has Japan even gotten a Celebi event yet?

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Dread?
« on: June 04, 2009, 12:47:17 PM »
I was browsing Nintendo Life and, according to an interview on Kotaku, another Metroid game besides Other M might be in the works.

http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2009/06/more_than_one_metroid_in_the_pipeline
http://kotaku.com/5277377/nintendo-new-metroid-is-not-metroid-dread

It's not entirely confirmed, but the director said that it MAY one day be released. It seems they're focusing on Other M right now though.

TalkBack / Re: Sega Announces Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing
« on: May 31, 2009, 01:54:54 AM »
I notice the name Robotnik is used in the article. Does that mean they are finally dropping the ridiculous Eggman name?

Also, why is Sonic even in a cart if he can run as fast as that? Make sonic run and the others can use cars.

*rubs temples because these arguments make my head hurt that much*

1) SEGA of America has acknowledged both names since Sonic Adventure 1. They have said Robotnik is the family name (evidence: Sonic Adventure 2) and that Eggman is a nickname. All the manuals currently even state that. This is the most stupid complaint I've ever heard. Get over the Robotnik/Eggman name change. It's incredibly minor.

2) It's a SPIN-OFF game. Sonic's racing in a car because it's a racing game. Why do people get so uptight about this anyway? (I just KNOW I'm going to regret asking this one...)

TalkBack / Re: Nikkei Reveals a New Wii Fit and Mario Title
« on: May 31, 2009, 01:49:01 AM »
OK... this is where I show my ignorance, so someone correct in the (very likely) chance that I'm wrong...

How is releasing a sequel to a game that's already selling well a bad thing? I mean, sure the current game is still profitable, but for fans of the current title who want something new, wouldn't giving them a sequel only help sales more? I don't really understand how releasing "Newer Super Mario Bros." would have any negative impact on the first game.

With that said, this is pretty exciting news; I mean, a new Mario game? A NEW MARIO game? Nintendo must be feeling rather wild and crazy if they're going to release more than one mainstream Mario game within the same console generation. I'm probably jumping the gun, but I'm calling a new mainstream game; it may either be a new DS title or a new Wii title. They can't be referring to "Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics" or "Mario & Luigi 3" since those have been announced since the beginning of the year.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive Game #4 Poll
« on: March 15, 2009, 03:35:29 PM »
My vote ended up going towards Secret of Mana. It's one of those games I downloaded but actually haven't played yet. I'd like to get into it though (since I loved Seiken Densetsu 3... which I would love to see an official English release of... wouldn't we all?).

Never played the first one, though I thought it looked kinda fun. This game better have an Ice Cap Zone remix (come on, it'd work!).

TalkBack / Re: Mega Man 9 to Include Screen Flicker and Slowdown Options
« on: August 06, 2008, 04:15:13 PM »
I don't have a problem with 8-bit graphics, that was never an issue for me, but I don't understand why people would want flicker and slowdown? I am (slightly) annoyed to see it when I play my favorite Virtual Console games, but I'm willing to accept them because they are emulating the hardware and that's just how it is. But why would I want to see that at all in a brand-new game?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Tiers?
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:39:03 PM »
Oh, well that makes more sense. Still, I think it's funny how so many people will swear by these characters just because they are of a higher tier. It's only a matter of time before they get knocked out by a character like Sonic or Bowser. I tend to swear by my favorites and what I feel I have the best control of (as I've been saying, Sonic, Lucario, etc.). I wouldn't mind entering a competition, but I figured I'd already get kicked around almost ridiculously. I'm far from best Brawler around, but I like to think I could still hold my own without trying to learn a character that I just don't like the feel of.

I don't think it's just skill or the particular character, I also believe luck plays some importance in matches, especially if items are turned on. But I'm kind of an opportunist, so that's where that probably comes from.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Tiers?
« on: May 26, 2008, 01:33:35 PM »
Tiers tend to matter more in tournaments where there's money to be won.

I guess, but I mean, can't a character of a supposedly "lower tier" just as easily put up a fight against one of a "higher tier"? How much different is it to knock out Shiek or Marth (or whoever the elitist favorites usually are) with Sonic or Lucario, versus using one "high tier" character versus another? I just think people take this tier crap too seriously.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Tiers?
« on: May 25, 2008, 11:49:26 PM »
I understand that there is a big competitive scene with Smash Bros., but I never understood this "tier" crap. I mean, does it suddenly make me a worse player because I prefer to use characters I like/can control better over another character? I dunno, whatever happened to having fun when you're playing? That being said, I don't know what really qualifies as "high-tier" and "low-tier." I also never got the whole "wavedashing" thing and all those other "advanced techniques" (which, if I'm not mistaken, was exploiting glitches, right?).

I don't know if Sonic qualifies for "high-tier" but he's my favorite character to use. I especially like being able to get multiple hits in before running off, using his high-jump and coming back down with a kick and probably follow up with some spin attacks. He's not the strongest character around, but I like that he's able to rack up damage quickly. His smash attacks are also pretty good. I've also gotten into using Lucario because he's more of a power hitter than Sonic, but also still really fun to play as. I'm liking Toon Link more because he 's faster than Link (who I used to play as all the time back in Melee). I dunno, I think Link was slowed down too much, and I prefer close-range fights so if I can get the extra speed it certainly helps. Finally, my other favorite character is the king himself, GANONDORF. He's not fast and he's really heavy, but being able to just punch someone and send them flying is really awesome to me.

I'm not really a competitive person, but I've never played in any tournaments and I've only ever played against my friends, so I probably don't get what the big deal is about using a character that I may not like how they control over another that may be easier for me to grasp and play as.
