TalkBack / Re: The State of Your Wii
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:25:19 PM »
I got my Wii close to launch (I was one of the suckers who paid extra on eBay to get one earlier).  It's been hooked up almost constantly and it's served me fairly well since then.  A few months ago it started ejecting discs when I tried putting them in, but I just unplugged it and it worked again the next day.  (I think the WiiConnect24 functionality was heating up the system and the heat was just enough to put something in the disc loader out of whack.  I no longer use WiiConnect24 and it doesn't heat up any more when I'm not playing games.)

TalkBack / Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review
« on: August 11, 2012, 02:28:01 AM »
And I really don't get why people keep calling it a "3D effect". New Super Mario Bros. 2 is not a 3D game, it's a 2D sidescroller.

Games like Super Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, God of War, Killzone, Halo, Uncharted, etc. are all 3-dimensional games, since you can view the characters and environments in full 3D glory.

This whole "3-D" gimmick is misleading. Just because a flat 2D image appears to pop-out at you, or gives an illusion of looking through a window, doesn't actually make it 3-dimensional.

Some of the definitions for "effect" include "an illusory phenomenon" and "an impression, usually one that is artificial or contrived."  Calling it a "3D effect" makes perfect sense because it looks like there is a third dimension on the Z axis (depth) when there are really only two dimensions on the X and Y axes (width and height).

But if that doesn't work for you, what do you propose we call it?

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Download - August 2, 2012
« on: August 02, 2012, 07:26:10 PM »
Eh...  $3 doesn't seem worth it to add 3D backgrounds to Solitaire, especially when I can already play the version that comes with Windows, or the free version I downloaded to my iPod Touch.

I don't think you grasp how much a million is. In my playthrough of Coin Rush I got about 1800 coins in those three levels. I would have to play through that over 500 times to get to a million. I wouldn't consider that extremely easy, especially given the apparent difficulty of the game.

The game better be difficult.  The trailers show Mario still getting 1Ups every 100 coins.  That's 10,000 lives earned once you reach the million coin goal.  Plus they've shown in other trailers that the Challenge Eliminator leaf has made a comeback.

And going back to the beginning of the talkback thread, I'm hating the music, too.  I was already getting tired of the theme from its inclusion in both NSMB and NSMBWii, and now they've made it worse by flooding it with that stupid fakey voice.  Maybe that's the million coin reward, make the music not suck.

TalkBack / Re: Swapnote Updated to Feature Additional Colors
« on: July 06, 2012, 12:17:40 PM »
If Swapnote can say "this part is normal, this part is popped out," I don't see why they wouldn't be able to make it say "this part is normal and black, this part is popped out and blue."  The only reasonable explanation I can come up with for the single color limitation is backward compatibility with users who haven't updated, as was mentioned earlier.

Peach will use that million coins to make you a cake, Bowser finds away to hide inside it and jumps out to kidnap Peach, Mario looks at the camera and shrugs as he says "Here we go again!" then an iris closes on his face followed by the credits rolling.

As for new levels as DLC, it's a much better method of distribution than a separate peripheral that scans paper cards with dot codes printed on them.

TalkBack / Re: First-Party Wii U Games Running at 720p Natively
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:52:21 AM »
Any word on if the Wii U can upscale Wii games, similar to how the Wii upscaled N64 VC games to 480p?

For that matter, since you can transfer downloaded software to the Wii U, does the Wii U upscale N64 VC games beyond 480p?

I figure they're keeping the stick above the buttons to keep it consistent with the Wii U Gamepad's stick placement.

20. Wave Race for Wii U
DUDE, I hadn't even thought of that.  Imagine if one player had a map of the track on the tablet controller, and they could touch it to create waves that the racer(s) would have to deal with...

If you're going to go that route, you might as well say the article's missing Smash Bros. as well.

The quotes I listed above directly reference events in Other M.

The real Adam would have said the same thing about that incident, but he would have softened the blow. He was relentless in his criticism, but he always cared...

The word he so obviously chose, "outsider," pierced my heart.

You can get it new at GameStop for $10.  If nothing else, that's a decent price for some Club Nintendo coins.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Game Club #2: Metroid: Other M
« on: April 30, 2012, 08:45:13 PM »
From a gameplay perspective, I thought Other M was a step backward.  In the 2D games, you had a way to toggle missiles on and off.  In the Prime games, missiles had a dedicated button.  In Other M, you had to plant your feet and practically immobilize yourself to use missiles.  Yeah, you could shake the remote to dodge using Quicksense, but you still lost your freedom of movement.  Quicksense also took a lot of challenge out of battles.  Just rapidly tap the D-pad when in battle and Samus will usually jump out of the way of any attacks that come close.

It was also disappointing how items were practically stripped out of the game.  Energy tanks are always nice, but missile pickups only increase your maximum capacity by one now, and accel charges are just boring.  Samus already has everything else, it's just a matter of being told you can use it, and there aren't any fun optional items to seek out like the spring ball in Super Metroid.

Speaking of being told you can use your items, Adam is an idiot.  Having been in the military, I can understand not authorizing Samus' more powerful weapons due to rules of engagement, use of necessary force, etc., but there is no reason why that would result in her disabling her protective equipment.  Not to mention the sheer idiocy of shooting a teammate in the back, completely disabling their protective gear as a metroid hovers overhead, then proceeding to shoot the metroid with a weapon that it is supposedly immune to due to genetic manipulation.  And this is the "perfect military mind" she refers to in Fusion?  The fact that he seems so incompetent in Other M makes Samus look bad for having such a strong infatuation with him.

You also don't get the satisfaction of taking out a number of key targets.  The Deleter, found dead.  Ridley, sucked dry by metroids.  MB, frozen by Madeline, then shot and killed by the other military unit that showed up.  Having the game complete your objectives for you should be done through Super Guides or cheat codes because you suck, not because it's an integral part of the game.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS Firmware Update Coming On April 25
« on: April 21, 2012, 12:17:24 AM »
Are they going to be restricting online play to players with the same version of the system software?  That wouldn't really be fair if someone passed on the update and used the glitch against someone who patched up and couldn't use the glitch even if they wanted to.

Maybe the chick from Ghost Trick? Nintendo's really conservative with their ladies, generally.

If you're going Nintendo-only, that wouldn't work since Ghost Trick recently came out on iOS.

You mean like every other DS game?

On another message board I'm on, people are saying things like:

...I’m glad I saved that spare $10 in my eShop for Dillon’s Rolling Western to come out. Very addictive downloadable game.... Aiming at enemies is a little awkward but still good game so far. A little pricy but I’d give it a shot.

Hey everyone: go buy Dillon’s Rolling Western. It is absolutely fantastic. Everything meshes fantastically together, and it’s made by the same guys behind the Tingle RPGs. Now shut up and give them your money! GO!

Looks like a major case of YMMV with this one.

There was actually a game earlier than Yoshi's Safari that called the princess Peach.  In Yoshi's Cookie, you can select the princess in versus mode, and if you just select "end" without entering a name, it will use one of two default names, PEA and PRI.  Of course, since it only lets you enter three letters, it doesn't fully reveal the name Peach, but that's clearly what it's alluding to.

I played through the two chapter demo and loved it, but I wanted to know before buying it: Is there any advantage to getting the ~$30 DS version over the $10 iOS version?

Are you playing the game in a brightly lit room? I've heard that can interfere with the controls; otherwise, they've worked like a charm for me.

I heard about the IR issues, so I jammed a bit of cardboard under the Wii remote condom to cover the IR sensor.  At one point when I was flying the beetle, I was trying to make a slight turn to the right and the beetle made a noticeable turn of about 30 degrees to the right.  It worked properly after I recalibrated it again, but that just goes to show the IR sensor isn't the only thing causing problems.

Also, I've noticed that there have been many times when I've tried moving the sword into position to swing it, but I move it so fast that it registers as a swing, and it doesn't register my intended swing because Link's still in the middle of his swing animation.  Honestly, it's quite annoying.

Well, they added Rime to the DS version of Myst as well, so they had the assets available in some manner.  Looks like crap.  http://i.imgur.com/2hEde.jpg

And thanks for linking that video.  I was wondering if they'd have to re-render the graphics or do some faking to get the 3D effect, but it looks like they took the easy way out and simply didn't add one.  It honestly looks like there's no point to this version.  Amazon says it will release for $30, which is kind of ridiculous when you can get either PC version for $6 or a portable iOS version for $5.

I wonder what these "new landscapes" are that they mentioned.  If they actually added new areas with new puzzles to solve, this might be a worthwhile purchase.  Otherwise, I already know how to beat the game from playing through the original Myst, and I've already seen Rime in RealMyst.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: SD Data Transfer

Sure enough.  I formatted my 16GB card, copied the files from my 8GB card to my PC then to the 16GB card, and the software all appeared when I put it back in my 3DS.  Definitely made use of the feedback form provided in the email to let them know their error.

Page 34 of your 3DS manual walks you through this.  It's supposed to be as simple as copying all of the contents from your old SD card onto a fresh new SD card (i.e.: /nothing/ already on it).

Well, this is strange.  The word from Nintendo support is:

Quote from: Nintendo
I am sorry to say that you will not be able to transfer or copy Nintendo 3DS eShop downloads from one SD card to another, including your saved game data, so you will need to download them again.

I guess I'll have to give it another try when I get back home.
