Title: I'm down for some Mario Kart 7. Anyone want to play some night?
Post by: Phil on March 10, 2014, 03:48:51 PM
Haven't played Mario Kart 7 in a while, but with Mario Kart 8 due out at the end of May, I'm feeling the need for some kart craziness.

Would anyone be interested in setting up a time and community to race with one another? This need not be overly competitive. Just for fun. :)

You're probably not able to play, then.

I would but I wouldn't be available to play until the weekend probably. I started playing this for about a week and then I started AC: New Leaf and then I only played MK sparingly for another week or two after until abandoning it and playin AC everytime, all the time. I'd probably be easy competition but I would like to get back into it and finish it up before the MK8 arrival.

Weekend's fine. I'm rusty anyway.

Hm, would you have any interest in playing Mario Kart Wii? That's the one that's losing its online soon, which makes it the one I would prefer.

We could do that. I'm sorry for the late response. I'm a bigger fan of 7, but Wii gave me a lot of fun (and frustration). Loved the amount of characters and unique vehicles.

It's been awhile but if you want to play some Mario Kart 7, I'd be up for it now. I'd like to unlock the gold kart pieces to complete the title and playing online will help me do that faster for one of them. Plus, after talking about getting some kind of NWR online meet-ups, I should start working towards getting that idea off the ground so maybe this can be a spring board to that eventuality.

This would be where me getting my lazy butt on whatever the Discord channel is would help out in getting things going! :D

Sooooo, you up for some online play at some point?

(Maybe I should start another MK7 thread to try and get others on the forums to meet up also.)

I haven't played MK7 online yet but how many people can race together at the same time? Is it 4 like MK DS or is it a full 8 now?

It's a full 8 for online. And yep, I'm still up for online play! :)

Ok. Well, I'm pretty much free from 7:45 PM CST - 2:00 AM CST each evening and can arrange to meet up with you (or other forum members lurking and reading in this thread) during a time that works for you in that span.

Things are going to be a little busier for me because I was currently diagnosed with something else on top of the bipolar I talked about, so I'm currently looking for a therapist who specializes in what I need with little to no cost since American healthcare. Also, I have a job interview on Tuesday, the first after graduating college, so that's on my mind, too. But I am really looking forward to having a fun, casual night of MK7!

Ah, well, that's poopy. There's obviously no urgency on this so when you are up to it let me know and we can probably arrange something soon.

I may try to get more people involved. As I move away from possibly hosting forum games, I may start working harder at trying to get more online gaming meet-ups happening for this community and make that a focus. I'm growing more interested in expanding forum online gaming meet-ups instead and seeing if we can't make that a regular thing.

Well, I finally got all 150cc cups with 3-stars in MK7 so I figured I try my luck online just playing random people. If I can get 3-star cups then I should know the courses well enough by now.

So, jumped online and discovered how the online component works. Everyone selects a course and then one of them is randomly chosen. The first course up was Koopa Cape. I was a bit nervous since it had been awhile since I'd played it. It was one of the courses in the first cup I 3-starred so it had been a while. I was rather rusty while also later my nerves and excitement get the best of me and ended up in 4th or 5th. Tried again and the next race was Koopa Beach N64. Did ok, I was keeping up with the back. Suddenly, near the end of the last lap, I was in first place coming around the corner and could see the finish line up ahead. That's when I got whammied by an item and placed 5th or 6th. Frustrating to see victory coming up and losing but at least I felt better about myself and that victory might be possible against these Japanese and Australian players I seemed to be getting matched up with.

Then came the turning point. The next race was Rainbow Road MK7 edition. So, I buckled down and just paid attention to solid racing fundamentals as I figured that would give me the best chance to win and didn't want to be driving wild on this course. The end of the race came and suddenly I realized it was myself in second and someone else in first. I was pretty sure it was the Japanese player who had selected Rainbow Road as the course to play in the first place. We passed the last items on the course and I didn't get anything that I could use offensively and he looked to have enough of a lead to win even if I did my best on the two tight corners ahead. Well, suddenly, the miraculous honking of a blue shell coming from behind reached my ears. It passed me by leaving me unharmed while blowing up the racer ahead of me. I zoomed by him with my tight cornering on the last bend and zoomed ahead to the finish line winning my first online race and on Rainbow Road to boot. Poor guy was probably peeved to get a blue shell at the end like that.

That race, however, marked a turning point for me and I went a winning streak getting 8 - 10 first place victories in a row. It turns out, I might actually be good at Mario Kart. However, a Japanese player showed up at this point. I recognized the name reoccurring as I played more races and the point total accompanying it. This one racer was really good and he became my main competition sometimes winning first place while I fell to second or had a meltdown and ended up in 4th or 6th as I did in a couple bad races. I did get a couple wins against him but it was much tougher for awhile. However, I finally started breaking through at the end and getting a few more first place wins in the last few races I did while he began to struggle for a bit and fall into 3 - 6th place in various races.

I learned there are a couple courses I need to brush up on and some weak spots I've got. There are some courses I seem to be really great at. One course, even with a blue shell and a couple lightning bolts, no one even got close to challenge my lead. Everyone seems to be playing online with Metal Mario (gross), Yoshi or Toad. The Japanese really seem to go for Metal Mario so maybe he's supposed to be a top tier character. I was the only player who seemed to be rocking Daisy. I never encountered any others out there which is sad. And why no love for Waluigi? I know why. That's not a serious question. Hopefully, my success with Daisy confounded some of these Metal Mario players and will cause them to rethink their character strategy.

I took my VR from 1000 - 1336 after a couple hours which I suppose is good but I'm not sure. In order to get the Gold Standard kart body, according to GameFaqs, I need to obtain a VR higher than 10,000 points or collect 20,000 coins. I though the 20,000 coins requirement was insane but it might take me just as long to get to the 10,000 VR ranking as well. That's a lot of racing for something I don't think is even worth it.

Anyways, that's my report on MK7 online play. If we do face off Phil, I guess it only fair to warn you that, based on this comparison against other human players, I may be a pretty tough opponent. Not sure how you've faired online in your MK7 adventures. I'll also just add that despite not normally being interested in online play for games, I found MK7 a very positive experience. It's only the second time I've played Mario Kart online. The first was with the DS when Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection first started and, although it was alright the first few times I played it, it soon became a frustrating experience with players either snaking or dropping connections and being jerks if they were going to lose. This was far and away a much better experience and I look forward to playing some more MK7 online in the future now and I'm even more excited to try playing other stuff online.

Just tell me what time works for you. I went online again last night and played for about 90 - 120 minutes. Took my VR rank from around 1350 to 1740. I plan to be back online again tonight to see if I can crack 2,000 which I expect to do since I seem to keep doing pretty well against the competition I've been facing.

11 PM EST is 7 PM PST which is fine. It gives me plenty of time in the evening to connect. That said, it may now be trickier over these next few days. I was going to go and check out a movie or two tonight to start catching up on summer blockbuster season and then I'm on the road a bit from Thursday - Tuesday. Maybe I can connect through hotel Wi-Fi but not sure how well that will be or what my availability will be like. However, after I get back Tuesday night, I will be back to my regular wide berth of availability possibilities.

That said, whenever there is a moment that works for you to meet up, post it and I will do my best to accommodate.

10 PM CST is fine for me. I don't know if my employment situation will change soon (which would be happy times!), but I will keep you in the loop, you two.

Will either of you be around tonight?

11 PM EST is 7 PM PST which is fine.
I think you did the math wrong. PT is three hours behind ET, so 11 PM ET would be 8 PM PT.

I might have to get to bed around then due to a therapy appointment early tomorrow, but you two can feel free to play without me. We'll definitely get something going with all three of us, though! :)

I, uh, well, hmmm, you see, it's..., I just, uh, yeeeeaaaaahhhhhhhh.  :-[

I assume you want to meet up at 11 PM your time? It might be possible. I've got a bunch of tasks I'm trying to take care of before I go on my brief excursions plus I have to pack. If I can get things handled quickly enough then I may be able to but it's iffy. Let me know when you want to meet and I'll give you an update on here an hour before as to whether I've got the time or not.

I'll probably play for a while, so I'll just get started around 11 and see what happens. Did you want to use some sort of text chat?

Yeah, it would probably help to have a place to check in and communicate. We can do so in this thread, in the NWR Chat or NWR Discord. I can access all of those spots.

It was fun to meet in a non-forum game, Khushrenada! We had some good races, and no messers or hackers that I saw, so that's always nice.

I checked my playtime after we were done, and it had just reached 68 hours and I still don't have all of the kart parts either. So that should give you an idea how much time it will take you to unlock them all, though with how much you committed to Animal Crossing New Leaf, this'll probably be a light task for you.

Yes, having thatguy join in was an awesome bonus. Glad we could do this. Thanks for taking me up on my offer even if you are a more experience Kart racer than me. Definitely met my match in the races we played.

I'm ready to meet up again anytime although it will be better when I get my battery replaced. I've got a new one on order because the one I've got now is really toast. It's having a hard time holding a charge of any kind.

Not sure I'm going to try and collect all the Kart pieces in the game. At this point, all I need are the Gold Kart pieces but they don't do anything special. There are equivalent pieces you can use instead. Their main function seems more about status and accomplishing the feat of acquiring them although I do think they represent the best stats you can get for each Kart piece. As I committed as I was to Animal Crossing, there were also a lot of other activities to engage in at the same time as I was grinding out some of those tasks. Once I reached a point where they were pretty much gone, I've set the game down and haven't gone back despite being close to finishing the badge quest. I kind of focused on acquiring AC Cards and getting sidetracked by that.

MK7 doesn't quite have enough to it to maybe keep me motivated to grind away although playing the online component now for the first time is keeping things a bit fresh but I'm getting tired of seeing a lot of the same courses come up a lot namely the two Rainbow Roads. I was hoping it would be a quick turnaround like in Smash Bros where it only took one or two battles for me to get the online milestones/unlocks but this would require weeks to accomplish and there are other games I'd rather keep playing. I just got back into MK7 by chance and started liking it enough and more than the first time I played the game to stick at it more and start knocking off the quest for 3 star cups. With that almost complete, I'm almost ready to move on. (Actually, I got back into Crosswords 3DS on my recent trip since I wanted something I hoped would be less taxing on the battery and it would be easier to pause and resume play with different interruptions. Now I've been playing that for the past week and haven't touched MK7. My attention: It's fleeting! I have started to move on.)

Mario Kart is the kind of game that's easy to jump back into from time to time, so there's no need to grind. Maybe it will happen naturally after some time.

That was a fun night of racing, Khushrenada! I can certainly see that you have improved since last time, nice job. Funny story about that, I was actually out of town, and had mainly brought my 3DS to see if I would get any StreetPasses at the airport, of which I just got 2, so it was disappointing on that front. I s'pose the 3DS really is winding down in popularity. Anyway, I was bored at night so out of curiosity I decided to connect it to the Wi-Fi and see if anyone was online, I think there was something else I wanted to check too. I then saw you online playing, and it just so happened that the game card in my system was Mario Kart 7. So I figured, why not? It wasn't a very comfortable place to play (I didn't have my Circle Pad Pro XL for example) but it was manageable. I also wasn't sure if the Wi-Fi would be very stable but I had only one DC so it wasn't so bad.
