General Chat / Re: Google's Quest for World Dominance
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:28:33 AM »
Nothing wrong with Google. They built the most popular search engine, they have the world's best web browser (Chrome), they have the most popular smartphone OS (Android), they own the most popular user-submitted video site (Youtube). Google is indeed a dominant force in the internet industry, but that just gives them great brand-recognition.

Google Docs is better than Microsoft Office. Everything is saved online, and it's so easy to access from Google Chrome just by signing into your browser.

I tried Microsoft's SkyDrive and MS Office web apps. They're ok, but nothing beats Google's eye for simplicity and ease of use.

Now I'm kind of regretting my purchase of an iPod Touch. I like it, and I love how it syncs with iTunes, but Android is just so much more popular now, and all of Google's web apps integrate so well with it.

I should have bought a Samsung Galaxy Player (Android MP3 player that's competing with the iPod).

Honestly, I love the controls. The scheme is wonderfully intuitive and fun, and with the addition of the Circle Pad Pro (I'm a lefty), the system feels way more comfortable and easy to use. I just enjoy this game so much.

I really hope Sakurai expands upon Uprising with a potential sequel (for Wii U).

I thought the whole reason Sakurai left HAL was because he wanted to get away from Nintendo. Yet most of his games at Sora have been for Nintendo consoles, and he & Iwata even set up "Project Sora" together (Nintendo is the majority owner).

Nintendo E3 Conference Expectations

(The crowd's talk is reduced to a murmur as Reggie walks out on stage. A smattering of applause. Reggie takes a pause and looks off to the left before opening his mouth.)

"Well, folks. Here we are. I know most of you think that we're trying to compete with the other consoles out there, but you couldn't be further from the truth. We can't compete with the other consoles because there's no competition for what Nintendo does. We innovate. We make quality games. However, we're going to bring ourselves up to date with your current expectations. Case in point: The Nintendo Network."

(Goes on to explain this, crowd is mildly interested.)

"So the 3DS, huh? It's a pretty damn nice system. Oh, did I not mention that those games we teased last year are getting released soon?"

(Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, etc. given release dates.)

"Oh, and we're making a new Mario title, too. Don't worry, this one won't suck like 3D Land. Because it's in 2D."

(Mario Bros. 3DS shown)

"Speaking of franchises you love, why not have some Metroid? Yeah, that's nice, isn't it?"

(Since everyone seems to believe we're getting a Metroid game, I might as well hop on the bangwagon.)

"Oh, and blah blah blah other crap. Hey, do you remember that system we sold for six years and destroyed our competition with? Yeah, it's dying. But not before the Last Story and Pandora's Tower are released, I guess." The Last Story was given to Xseed. Nintendo of America was too lazy to publish their own game in the US.

(Crowd is antsy.)

"Now, for the real reason you're here: The Wii U."

(Pretty promo vid that is both annoying and exciting in premise.)

"This bitch is coming out soon. For like, 300 dollars. And guess what? We're gonna have an app store, some nice online capabilities, and- some games. What games, do you ask?"

(Crowd is at the edge of their seats.)

"PUSHMO."

(We are treated to a gritty, modern-warfare-esque rendition of the game, with a serious plot and blood and gore. Tagline, "When they trapped the children... they pushed me too far.")

"DILLON'S ROLLING WESTERN."

(Hyper-stylized, ultra-violent version of the original. Considered a port.)

"AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST. SUPER PRINCESS PEACH."

(Epic, Galaxy-scale platforming and music presented, Princess Peach duels Daisy for the first time. The crowd is on their feet.)

"Blowjobs will be given by our showgirls after the presentation is finished."

(Reggie drops his mic, leaves the stage. The crowd is going wild, unsure if the presentation is over. When suddenly, Sakurai appears on the projector.)

"When thinking about how to revolutionize the Smash Bros. Experience, I came to one conclusion. EVERY CHARACTER MUST HAVE A MOVESET SIMILAR TO STAR FOX."

(The crowd dies in a state of euphoria.)

And talking about custom firmware, hacking, etc. is bad on these forums.
For the last time, NO IT IS NOT. Talking about piracy is bad, but not these specific topics.

Are you the same MegaByte from TMK ("The Mushroom Kingdom" Mario fansite)?

Also, don't a large majority of people who use custom firmware do it to pirate games and download ROMs & ISO's?? Why else would you need a 500 GB hard drive on your Wii?

We haven't seen a Game Boy game in two months. I don't think it's unreasonable to be upset about that.

We had 3 Game Gear games a couple weeks ago. Game Gear is part of the Virtual Console too.

Target could be on the list because they openly support anti-gay politicians. There was a boycott of Target in 2010 after they made large contributions (about $150K) to a anti-gay Minnesota politician.

I am not shocked Bank of America is ranked higher than Walmart. BOA helped wreck the world economy, illegally kick people out of their homes (because BOA no longer owned the the houses they were foreclosing on), they actually locked customers in one of their branches in Santa Cruz last fall when they tried to close their accounts (this was during the mass exodus when hundreds of thousands of people closed their bank accounts and move their money to credit unions), they tried to charge $5 a month to people with debit accounts until a massive petition (and lots of media coverage) shamed them into not doing it, they were caught price-fixing ATM fees along with 2 other banks and 2 major credit card companies, they laid off 30K employees while still paying their CEO $7.5 million. Yeah, there is plenty of reason to hate them.

EA should not even be on the list.

Had to correct this, Target gave a contribution to a pro-business organization that in turn donated to a pro-business politicians who happened to be anti-gay, there is a big difference. Target has a pro-business policy in regards to donations, just happened this particular organization donated to a candidate who was anti-gay. When you smear an organization at least try to have your facts straight. Target still has some of the best anti-discrimination policies around.

http://www.factcheck.org/2010/08/mn-forward/

Anyway that is getting really off topic. EA is far from being one of the worse businesses in America.

So Target is better than Walmart and Kmart/Sears?

2135
As someone who's actually worked at Target's corporate HQ, I can say that they're not anti-gay at all. There's an LGBT networking club there. They're very proud of it.

Ok? Good for them.

I still don't get why you have to feel "proud" to be gay, bi, etc. You don't see me going around saying I'm "proud" to be straight. What does pride have to do with it?

2136
Looking at the bracket makes me wonder a few things. How did BoA beat Wal*Mart? How did Target even make the list? Is there really no sympathy for the Post Office? It's dying and still comes 6 days a week (for now).

If the post office is dying, then what will happen to FedEx, UPS, etc.? Packaged goods are still useful. How else will we get our online orders shipped to us?

And most companies still use paper-billing because it's safer than sending it to an email account. Email can get hacked, online accounts can be broken into, etc.

2137
The thing is Shorty, we've already seen things at the last E3 that look better than the current generation. The bird demo and the Zelda HD demo. Not to mention Ghost Recon looked as good as a PS360 game.

Another thing people don't seem to understand about game consoles:

Graphics are constantly improving the more developers get accustomed to the system's architecture. Look at the early Xbox 360 launch games (Kameo, King Kong, Perfect Dark Zero, etc.) and compare them to the games of today. There is a huge increase in graphical quality.

When the Wii U launches, games will most likely look like modern Xbox 360/PS3 games (from the last 2 years, at least). But once developers get used to the system, they will be able to push it more.

Another good example is the PS3. Most of the launch games were buggy Xbox 360 ports, but then developers finally got used to the complicated Cell processor, and they were able to code their games more sufficiently. Look at Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, MGS4, etc.

I know it's gonna happen, I just hope it's not anything that we could have seen coming from a mile away.

That's exactly the issue though.  The things that Nintendo gets wrong are the things that a drunk 10 year old could have thought up.

If they made a mistake that came completely left field, that noone could have seen coming.  Who could blame them?  It happens.  No one really at fault there.

Nintendo has absolutely no concept of foresight.  They just look at the here and now.  Occasionally they will fluke it.  But how long can you play the cards that way?  Soon it will backfire, and badly.

The people who were burned with the Wii will be VERY cautious this time.  And those "Casual crowd" won't be interested in buying a new console because they are "Casual"!!  The Wii still works and does what they want, why drop another wad of cash on a new console?

That's interesting, cause the "casual" crowd is constantly buying new smartphones, tablets, and iPhones every year. Why wouldn't they do they same for a game console that they enjoyed, especially one that has the "Wii" name on it?

WII U does have 4 USB ports, hense external HD.  Kinda wished they went with at least one USB3 port but at least I won't have to worry about buying new equipment--I'll just use my 500GB USB drive that's hooked up to the WII now.

Um, the Wii doesn't "legally" support USB drives. And talking about custom firmware, hacking, etc. is bad on these forums.

It depends on what the space is going to be used for. 64 GB is in no way reasonable for a download-only machine, especially with Sony and Nintendo using discs that can hold up to 50 GB.

It all depends on how big the file sizes are. Most smartphones, tablets, and the iPod Touch have small amounts of flash storage (up to 64 GB in most cases). For those devices, it's fine since the file sizes are extremely small.

I haven't heard of any developers complaining about the storage capacity of an iPhone or iPad. And those devices don't have a file size limit.

If Wii U's eShop games have small file sizes, then 64 GB is more than enough. I have an 8 GB card in my Wii and 3DS, and I still have plenty of "blocks" left (over 54,000 blocks to be precise).

Where's n-Space?  Do they count? :D

n-Space doesn't normally develop their own indie titles. They typically make stuff for bigger 3rd-party companies (Call of Duty on DS being the biggest example).

What a bunch of whiners. Lack of Virtual Console releases? We've been getting a new VC game every week, give or take. A couple weeks ago, we got 3 Game Gear games. That's incredibly generous for Nintendo's standards.

Colors 3D is by far the best (non-game) app on the 3DS eShop. For a painting app, it even beats Microsoft Paint.

Also, you can only buy 3D Classics: Kid Icarus at GameStop (in store or online). Nintendo isn't selling it directly on the eShop yet.

2143
The content wouldn't be on the disc if they weren't going to charge for it, though. The business plan for the game involves that content being paid DLC. Whether it's on the disc or has to be downloaded later isn't important

But the whole concept of having to download an unlock key to access content that is already on the disc is ridiculous. It's like buying a car, only to find out you can't use the radio unless you pay an extra $30. I know you're not paying for the game's unlock key, but it's a decent analogy.

I remember when we used to unlock extra content by actually playing the game. Only the most skilled players could unlock everything in the game.  Smash Bros. Brawl and Kid Icarus Uprising are perfect examples of this.

Nintendo can try to play it off that they're aren't competing with Sony and MS but they really are. If you buy a Sony/MS console or game, you didn't buy a Nintendo console/game. Nintendo wants people to spend money on their wares.

So would the same thing apply to the 3DS competing with Apple (iPod / iPhone / iPad), Android, and Windows Phone 7? They all play games.

2147
I just wanna remind you guys that I had it written on a napkin (by the same person that fed me RE6 on Wii U) that X720 aka "Durango" isn't coming till 2014, and PS3 is supposed to be 2013.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=16688.msg721397;topicseen#msg721397
so take that how you will, but I would suggest a spoonful of sugar salt.

So Microsoft is going to ride the 360 wave as long as they can? Good for them.

As for Sony, they should do a "wait and see" approach with the PS4, since they still haven't completely recovered financially from the PS3's disastrous launch (which was 6 years ago).

2148
Diablo III could require procuring a first born and giving them to Blizzard as payment and it would still sell decently.  The Diablo series, in General, Blizzard has had a real bad time with Pirating.  As far as DRM is going what they are doing really isn't that bad.  It stinks you can't play Offline.  I will admit that, but its better then half baked DRM solutions.

I do wonder how long Internet can keep its current status and not become a service like Electricity and Phone.

Internet access is already a service. You pay to acquire a modem / router that you use to connect to the Internet.

There was an interesting discussion of this kind of thing on Weekend Confirmed a couple weeks ago. The argument made was that the DLC content only exists because the business plan was to sell it. It's not a question of charging for the content vs. including it for free; it's charging for the content or the content not existing. Once you realize the business end of it, that the content wouldn't be there at all if they weren't charging for it, it becomes irrelevant whether it's on the disc or not.

But it makes no sense to charge for a patch that just unlocks content that's already on a disc.

You already bought the game, why should you be denied content that is already on the disc?

Making DLC that is an expansion to the game is a better idea, IMO. It extends the replay value of the game.
