Was bored & looking to kill some time with something short, so I decided to finally watch the 4 episode Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness CG series on Netflix.

As a huge fan of the games (especially those involving Leon & Claire), I...fucking...HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE this series. The series takes place inbetween the events of Resident Evils 4 & 5, and good GOD does it embody everything I absolutely despise about the brown & grey military shooter era of Resident Evil.

Government conspiracies? Check.
An incredibly stupid, convoluted plot obsessed with the geopolitical standing of World Powers instead of horror? Check.
Various government agencies buzzing around with assault rifles? Check.
Brown, brown, and more brown color scheme? Check.
Not the slightest sense of fun in sight? Check.

Oh, but let's add on the cliches of the Resident Evil CG movies too!

Leon & Claire are the main characters, but Claire has **** all to do with the story and has to be saved by Leon at one point? Check.
Guy who decides to become a roided-out Tyrant at one point for revenge against the true villain, despite the objections of his close female companion? Check.
General disdain for women in general? Check.
REALLY shitty animation when characters aren't standing around blandly talking, leading to characters suddenly become The Flash when it's Go Time? Check.

The Voice Actors for Leon and Claire are their mediocre non-Union actors from the Resident Evil 2 remake, which wouldn't be so bad except the characters are sporting their classic RE4 & RE2 character designs, respectively, so the voices seem to match up even worse than they did before. The plot is just downright incoherent for most of the 4 episodes, with characters often going places for no established reason; performing actions for no apparent reason; and frequently teleporting across entire countries for the sake of the plot.

The action scenes are poorly-storyboarded and boring to watch. I swear, the big monster Tyrant that goes down this time gets quite possibly the lamest death in series history. Yes, even lamer than how the Leech Queen died in RE0.

The series sets up a cliffhanger of sorts for a season 2, but I hope it doesn't get another season. It doesn't deserve a 2nd chance. It makes the 3 RE CG movies look like high art by comparison. I award it no points, and may God have mercy on its soul.

Finished Season 6 of Arrow. Yeah, gotta wasn't very good, mostly because I feel like they traded a good villain halfway through the season for a bad one. Diaz is a perfectly good Season 1-3 Arrow villain, but as a Season 6 villain? Come the **** on. Are you REALLY telling me that a 2 bit punk that kills everyone who even slightly demeans the size of his manhood is a worthy foe for not only this Arrow team, but the entire JUSTICE LEAGUE that Oliver Queen has on speed dial at this point?

This season could have been OVER at ANY point this season if the characters weren't arbitrarily incompetent and if Oliver actually took advantage of his resources for once instead of just having to Learn the Power of Friendship YET AGAIN. At least with the villain of the 1st half of the season, you had a guy who could legitimately out-think and outplay the heroes

It's been a long time since I've watched that series, but the time is finally near.

It’s been a long road
Getting from there to here
It’s been a long time
But my time is finally near

You know, I've never understood the internet hatred for that song. One of the nice things about the Kelvin Timeline movies; Discovery; and Picard shattering the Star Trek fanbase has been the critical reappraisal of Enterprise (and, to a lesser extent, Voyager), but people still bitch about that song.

Been watching a bunch of stuff of late, notably a handful of various anime series like Beyond the Boundary; Wise Man's Grandchild; and Attack on Titan's Final Season (Part 1).

Attack on Titan was so much better when it was a horror series in Season 1. This show just hasn't worked for me since it decided to become a political intrigue/"cycle of violence" show.

Recently finished my first actual watch of the entirety of Star Trek TOS via the BluRay remaster. Overall, I hate to say it but TOS kinda peaked in Season 1 when it was throwing around ideas just seeing what would work. Once it settled into a formula in Seasons 2 & 3, it kinda sucked. Sure, there were good episodes in Seasons 2 and 3 when the occasional writer decided to put out an episode that was either absurdly silly or INCREDIBLY serious and full of dread, but I just don't think those seasons hold up even with the remaster fixing the dated effects. It also doesn't help that 1960s writing meant that every episode was filled with more dull padding than an episode of Lost.

Against my better judgment, I'm resuming my watch of the Arrowverse, starting with the 2nd half of Season 6 of Arrow. God, I'd forgotten just HOW tedious this show could get, not to mention how awful the sound mixing for this series ALWAYS WAS, going from (incredibly quiet mumbling, so you'd better have the subtitles on) TO INCREDIBLY EAR-PIERCINGLY LOUD WITH FREQUENT SCREECHES! The 2nd half of Supergirl is next. Back when I was still watching these shows, I'd already finished Seasons 3 of Legends of Tomorrow and Season 4 of Flash.

You're right, I should have worded it as "first release" since re-releases are allowed. But it's too late, now it looks like backpedaling! Oops!

It's a good thing I'm even less of a stickler and say a person should be able to count any game and any version so long as they haven't played it yet before. So, if you bought a game in July or August 31 and beat it before the month was over, I say it can still count because you are keeping it out of your backlog instead of adding to it. Likewise, if a person beat Kirby's DreamLand 3 on their Super Nintendo years ago but then beat KDL3 for the first time in something like Kirby's 25th Anniversary Collection for Wii during August then I say that counts as well.  8)  Basically, I'm cool with you counting Quake for your month's totals if you want to. I just like to take the Waluigi Defense and claim that "everyone's cheating" if I'm not number one.  ;D

Well, if that's how you want to roll, then add Tormented Souls to my count, a game that came out last Friday and I beat over the weekend. :P

I actually started playing Deadly Premonition 2 in the final few days of August, but there was no way in hell I was going to wrap that by the end of August. Likewise, I put a few days' worth of progress into the PS5 version of Hades in August, but I haven't had a successful run yet.

After that last post, I got curious about where things are at this month. Here's what I've seen posted.

5 Games Beat Club

RABicle - Burnout Paradise Remastered, Fire Emblem Heroes, Orwell, The Longing, New Pokemon Snap

4 Games Beat Club

Mr. Bungle - Mega Man Zero, Maze Walker, Mighty Switch Force 2, Splatoon 2

3 Games Beat Club

Broodwars - Katamari Damacy Reroll, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Panzer Paladin

2 Games Beat Club

TOPHATANT123 - Astral Chain, Suikoden

1 Game Beat Club

GK - Horizon Chase Turbo
Insanolord - Metroid: Samus Returns
Khushrenada - Skyward Sword Wii
Pokepal148 - Chibi-Robo Clean Sweep

7 participants so far (although others have mentioned trying to take part like Insanolord with Axiom Verge) and 17 games beat this month. I don't think we are going to reach last year's high of 44 at this point unless some other forum members have yet to chime in and can add to the number. However, 22 games would be the half of last year's total. That's 5 more games needed from where we are so I think that's doable. I know I'm close to finishing a couple games (Super Mario Party and Jenny LeClue). Can we go further than that? Could we suddenly pull off a gaming miracle and hit 30?!

Last year, RABicle finished the most games at 17. Luigi Dude had 15 and I was able to take down 14. Doesn't look like anyone will be hitting double digits this month though with how things are going. Will RAB take the lead again this year or is Mr. Bungle going to catch and surpass him?

EDIT: Added Insanolord's achievement to the list.

Well, we may be behind last year's totals, but from what I've seen of Negative World's Forums, we are still well ahead of them.

Well, my Limited Run Collector's Edition of Panzer Paladin finally arrived a few days ago, so it got me in the mood to FINALLY try and finish that game. I've been playing it off & on for a year now, putting it down when I got tired of its rather punishing difficulty. When last I'd played, I'd gotten up to the Wiley's Castle equivalent. Well, I've finally rolled credits on it. That final boss went down absurdly easily considering the insane crap you have to go through just to GET to him.

I do really like the game (hence the CE with the statues & soundtrack CDs), but man I wish the stages themselves were better balanced and paced. I really question why a "Life" system was even needed in this game, considering Shovel Knight didn't use one.  I've played Mega Man games easier than this thing on Normal. Killer soundtrack, though.

I don't think I will buy the DLC single player content.
For what it might be worth, the DLC is quite different, and is more varied; challenging; and interesting than the original single player mode.

Agreed. The Single-Player Splatoon 2 DLC is the best content in the game IMO. It focuses the experience on small bite-sized chunks that serves the game's mechanics SO much better the main game's drawn-out levels. And it ends with a pretty big bang.

Rolled credits on Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Eeesh, that game's final dungeon + final boss + hour-long epilogue dragged on forever.

I still have a bunch of side stuff and bonus content to do for the Platinum to "officially" get it out of my backlog, but I've beaten the game. That should suffice for this.

Haven't chimed in since this started, so...

Katamari Damacy Reroll - Yeah...I don't think I like this game very much. I just don't like how it controls, and the camera's always in the way. Played a few levels, maybe I'll go back to it, but right now just...meh.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon - This is and isn't my first Yakuza game, as I recently finished Judgment, but this is really clicking with me. I'm in Chapter 12 (of 15, apparently), and I'm just digging these characters. The dub is pretty good, too. It's MUCH better than Judgment's dub.

I wish the "random" fights weren't so frequent, though, and that getting the high-level gear didn't cost so much money. I have all the characters' affinities maxed-out, so yes I've done the Property Management Mini-game. I can get money whenever I want it, but it takes forever to get a decent chunk of money for high-end stuff $3,000,000 ever 5 minutes or fast-forwarding through menus or so.

Ducktales 2 on the NES. I played the first one to death as it was a staple when my family rented the NES from Blockbuster for special events. I never actually purchased the first game since I played it to completion via multiple rentals and I never knew about the second until years later. Someday I want to own a legit copy of both originals. I do wish that Wayforward did a remake of the sequel like they did for the first one. It could have even been done in the style of the rebooted cartoon series like the original was made in the image of the OG 80's cartoon.

I'm pretty sure that Ducktales 2 was in the Disney Afternoon Collection on current gen consoles, though, so you can absolutely play it. Yeah, it's not on Switch, but it's pretty much on everything else.

TalkBack / Re: Darksiders III Bringing Fury To Switch On September 30
« on: August 09, 2021, 01:17:24 PM »
Since the series is based on the four horsemen of the apocalypse, isn't there supposed to be a fourth game?

Yes, the original plan was for each Horseman to have their own game and then for the final game to bring them all together. Hell, Fury and Strife were originally supposed to share a game as a Co-op experience.  Considering how the 1st game ends, this plan was overly ambitious at best and incredibly foolish otherwise.

There technically is a 4th Darksiders game involving Strife (and Strife makes a brief appearance in Darksiders 3). It's Darksiders Genesis, a Co-op dungeon crawler starring War and Strife.

The only new game I plan on playing this month is Hades, which is an old game but will be newly-released on PS4/5, so I doubt it counts.

Until then, I plan on playing either Katamari Damacy Reroll or Yakuza: Like a Dragon, both of which are in my backlog. Will probably pick them up between Hades runs, too.

Well, it's a shame that the Suns that didn't win their Championship, but congrats to the Bucks for proving a lot of people wrong in a fucking weird year of basketball.

Well, I think MST3K probably best summed this up: They just didn't care.

Wild Arms 5. I bought it back when I had a PS2, but I sold my PS2 for an allegedly backwards compatible PS3. Beyond being a broken piece of crap I'd have to replace in a few years anyway when it hit the Yellow Light of Death, the software backwards emulation worked for all my games...but 2: Wild Arms 4 and 5. When you pulled those up, the games would just randomly crash. It could be 30 seconds, it could be an hour after starting, but it would crash. I somehow got a few hours into both games and loved them, but they were just unplayable on that or any other PS3.

Neither game has been re-released since in North America. People have asked IIRC AkSys to re-release them, and they publicly refused for unknown reasons. Piracy is pretty much the only way to play these games now.

If I understand this correctly, it's still the same exact hardware?

That's my understanding. Which means I can stick with my launch Switch and not spend even more money on video games this fall. Phew! The big disappointment to me is that the Joy-con issue sounds like it's still not getting fixed.

I have a hunch that Joycon drift is a larger manufacturing issue with modern controllers & not just a Nintendo thing. I got 2 Dualsense controllers with my PS5 back in February, and one of them started drifting within a month, so I'm not sure it's an issue Nintendo knows how to address yet.

Great. Now people can play their Indie Shovelware and Wii U ports on a crystal-clear OLED screen.

Oh, you play Switch games on your TV? Well, **** you.

I can't wait to see what convoluted method using 10-20 year old technology Nintendo uses to replace this feature in Splatoon 3 instead of just adding opt-in voice chat over headsets. Maybe text chat over Blackberries.

Rolled credits on Returnal last night, though I still need to get the "True Ending" that concludes "Act 3" of the game.

I really like it, but it's not for a lot of people, let alone "everyone". It is, however, one of the rare games where I would say that the "It gets good after X hours" argument has merit. So many people & so many reviewers couldn't even get through the 1st 3 Biomes that make up Act 1, let alone beat the game. I got stuck hard on that first Biome for quite a few bad runs, because I just couldn't get past the 1st Boss. Then I had an incredible run & completed all 3 of the Act 1 Biomes in one go with relative ease. Had a similar situation last night with Act 2, though at least I'd gotten to the 5th Biome beforehand.

I feel that if you can't push through the first Act, you haven't really seen how fun Returnal can be, as you haven't seen probably half of the available guns & artifacts and possibly didn't even acquire the grappling hook. I don't think I've seen a shooter this fast-paced, exploration-focused, and eager to punish carelessness since Doom Eternal, another divisive shooter. Once you've established a foothold in Act 2, I feel that the game really opens up in terms of gameplay options and you start being able to explore areas that are underwater; covered in what's essentially lava; or hidden behind invisible platforms, all things the game teases as far back as the 1st Biome.

I'll give Returnal's story this much: for as convoluted as it feels at times for this sort of game (it feels like there are 2 different stories at odds with each other between the Act-ending cutscenes & the "House" cutscenes), I appreciate the fact that so much of it is open to interpretation when so much of modern gaming is incredibly on-the-nose. It's helped the game to stick around in the back of my head when I'm not playing it more than a lot of games these days, in particular something very particular to how the game's soundtrack is woven into the storytelling. The game also has some amazing atmosphere that's drawn comparisons to Metroid Prime for good reason.

Is it "worth" $70? Eh...I dunno, but I'm enjoying it.

Been playing other stuff over the last few months, but not really up to writing about them at length: Persona 5 Strikers, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Judgment, Resident Evil Village, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, FF7 Remake: Intergrade, etc.

Well, the Jazz didn't make it to the Finals this year, but on the upside...neither will James Harden. **** that guy.

Good on the Bucks for pulling it off against the Superteam, but as I said before I want the Suns to win that Championship if the Jazz couldn't. Suns-Bucks could get interesting.

Well, with the Jazz officially out, I wish the Suns all the best to win the Championship. Maybe this loss will FINALLY convince this fucking organization to get aggressive on...ANYTHING.

Anyone but the Clippers or Nets for the Championship this year.

This game is infuriating. The three pointers were falling in the first half; they aren’t during this Sixers-level collapse. Stop shooting three pointers.

Terance Mann turned into Michael Jordan, apparently.

I just can't anymore with this team. We have Conley back, and the Clippers still don't have Leonard. If the Jazz lose this game and series, as they very much deserve to do, I expect this organization is going to get blown up by the new owner. Probably can't do much with the players right now, but I expect Dennis Lindsey has managed his last team, and I would not be surprised to see Quin Snyder gone as head coach.

God, I hate Paul George. He's like the second coming of James Harden. Every time he drives, he pushes off on the defending player with his off-hand, and the refs always respond by calling a foul on the defending player. It's Bullshit.

Really not happy with the officiating in general tonight. That Flagrant 1 call on O'Neal was weak.

OK, I'm done watching this trainwreck. The Clippers are just completely out-working the Jazz, and the Jazz have been ice cold and complacent in the 2nd half. This is painful to watch.

So, how about Atlanta coming back from being down 26 to beat Philadelphia by 3 on the road? What a finish.

And Embiid still can't hit a free throw to save his life.
