Title: Anyone here try Paladins?
Post by: Mop it up on August 06, 2018, 07:32:43 PM
It's gone free-to-play on Switch now. I've been playing it with a couple of friends, it's pretty fun! It's probably the closest thing the Switch will get to Overwatch...

I played a bit of it on PS4, and I thought it was a bit overcomplicated & yet too limited for my tastes. You have to manage a card-based loadout, and then purchasing upgrades ON that loadout on top of managing the shifting needs of a battle. When I last played it, it had 2 whole modes, and they weren't that different.

It seemed like a cool game, but I just couldn't get a feel for the characters & was kind of bored with the limited game modes.

I tried it! The menus seem complicated, and I haven't quite figured them out yet. The combat feels much better than Fortnite though.

I downloaded it. When I get over my Skyrim addiction problem needs play-through on Switch I'll give it some more time. How would you compare it to Fortnight as a multiplayer shooter experience on Switch?

It feels more like a traditional arena shooter, with a smaller map and more frantic action.

I've played a bit of Paladins. It's pretty good although it can get confusing with the card system and loadouts which is probably why I don't think it's much fun in competitive. But as a pick up and play game for a bit it's pretty fun.

Yeah, the interface could definitely be better, but oh well. The game's a lot of fun with friends. Do you have a time you typically play? It'd be nice to party up with some NWRers.

Honestly, I think they're rather different to really be compared. I think that's just happening because they're both free. But if I must, I'd say Paladins is way better. It has lots more action and variety.

Currently, all of the characters are available as a preview, so now's a good time to try out the game!

I'll give it a try once I satisfy my Monster Hunter addiction.

It's a fun game. People should try it.

Been giving it a go recently. Reminds me of Overwatch but the differences put it ahead in my opinion. I've never been really good at FPS games with gyro aiming with a 3rd person view helps a lot.

As of now, a few characters are available at the start(Ruckus being my fav) & others you can try as they rotate in & out every couple of days. Suprised that after 2 weeks I was able to buy-unlock 2 characters using just the in game currency you earn while playing.

Just a heads up for any potential competitive players. Tried competitive mode for the first time & discovered to my horror that you're locked in first-person view. Might not bother some players, but if you're like me & prefer 3rd person over first it's crippling.

The reason they do that is to make sure that Ranked matches are on an even playing field. It would be nice if they offered a separate queue for third-person view, like how the different control methods are separated, though that may be spreading things out too much.

The only time I ever played Ranked was for challenges that required it. Otherwise, it takes too long to get into a game, and doesn't really offer anything over the usual Quick Play queue aside from both teams having to use different chumpions from each other. In fact, it offers less, since only one mode is available.

What time do you usually play, GK? It would be fun to team up with you sometime; I've only ever played with an NWR crew one time, would be nice to do more.

Only ever did a single placement game but yeah, it does take a while to get started.

Mainly on weekday mornings where I'm killing time by doing some quests, but I'm sure I can find some time for weekends. I'm usually healing or front line so if you need a pocket healer or a bullet sponge on top of the objective, I'm game.

I often use support and frontline as well, though part of that is because most people don't seem to want to play them so I choose one to help round out the team. I now have all the chumpions unlocked so I can try playing whatever might help a team.

Now that I think of it, I don't believe I have you added on Switch yet. What's your code? Mine's SW-3118-4346-3322

Do you ever hang out in the NWR Discord chat? Might be a good place to use to chat between games.

I just pck those roles because I'm a lousy shot. Though I've been slowly trying other roles too.

We already have each other added. We actually played a few rounds of Splatoon 2 way back. My username's Liger Mask these days.

Nah I can never think of anything meaningful to say so I usually ignore the server. But sounds like a good idea for talking strategy or venting after loses.

Ah, well that would explain it! Sorry that I forgot. I knew "Liger Mask" was someone from NWR, but I couldn't remember who...

Just use Terminus, no aiming required!

Will you be around tomorrow (Sunday)? I'll probably play some then.

Was thinking of making him my next unlock but went with Zhin instead.

Yeah, I'll be around for sure.

I still play Paladins on Switch. It's really fun playing Onslaught.
Title: Re: Anyone here try Paladins?
Post by: GK on February 12, 2019, 12:19:45 AM
Yeah, you'd think Team Deathmatch would be the fun one but Onslaught gets pretty wild when everyone scrambles on to the objective at once. Even if teammates are trickling in & getting mowed down one at a time, a well-placed ultimate can turn the tides.

Post by: GK on February 12, 2019, 10:23:05 AM
Though when I think about it I probably enjoy Siege the most. Not as much chaotic fun, but as a frontline/healer main it often comes down to pushing the payload & keeping whoever is pushing it alive.

On the flipside, it's probably the most teamwork dependant of the games so a bad team can make this the most agonizing mode too.
Title: Re: Anyone here try Paladins?
Post by: Mop it up on February 12, 2019, 05:15:13 PM
Since you don't actually need to stand in the spot to score in Onslaught, and because kills give points, it's actually probably better if people didn't throw their bodies into the objective to stall for time like they can in Siege, hee hee. But it sure is funny when it starts happening, especially if the other team is doing it!

It feels like we haven't played in a while GK, we should find some time for that soon!

Tried to join you over the weekend but you were in a game. Then when I stepped away I saw a missed invite from you.

If you see me playing it just message me in the discord.

Well you two should be happy. That End Time event is pretty much Onslaught on Crack.

Oops! Sorry, I tend to forget about Discord. I hope you have mentions turned on!

Yeah, the End Times can get pretty crazy, but at times it feels like using cheat codes. And like with using cheat codes, it can feel a bit too twisted and lose its novelty pretty quickly, and just want to go back to normal. Too bad there's no way to play it without the modifiers. I also still have no idea what determines which pool of characters you'll get, but I get one way more often than the other.

As with most updates, this one also introduced a bunch more glitches. The biggest one though is how the input-specific queues aren't working, so now players using controllers are mixed in with those using keyboard and mouse. Eep.
Title: Re: Anyone here try Paladins?
Post by: GK on February 15, 2019, 04:52:49 PM
Yeah, mentions should be still on.

I thought the two pools were to avoid duplicates yet I've battled against copies of myself more than once. One thing I'm not enjoying is the match making seems even worse. I either get annihilated or our team rolls them over easily.

There's an input-specific queue? I thought crossplay meant everyone played everyone regardless of what you play on.
Title: Re: Anyone here try Paladins?
Post by: Mop it up on February 15, 2019, 05:52:29 PM
The reason why the matchmaking is worse is because this latest update added in crossplay with the PC version, as well as added in keyboard and mouse support to Xbox. So now we're mixed in with the sweaty PC players who are going to destroy everyone unless you have one on your own team too.

The update was also supposed to add the option to queue up by input method, so that you could just play with other players using a controller and not KB+M. However, this option was borked so it's been pushed back to a later update, and Ranked has been taken offline since it always sorts players by input method.

By the way, I forgot to mention that they fixed the matchmaking problems. If you would like to get matched only with other players using controllers and not keyboard and mouse, go to settings and on the bottom of the controls tab, set "Crossplay" to "Gamepad Only."

I may do that since I'll never get all that good at this game anyway & could use the help. Had a few games where I felt I was shot out of the sky too easily as Willo.

Been getting increasingly frustrated with the matchmaker this week. There's been games where an entire team is being spawn camped while only a single person on the other team has to effortlessly push the payload. Even with going gamepad only, some of these teams are obviously using a mouse to aim. I head I've getting long distance headshot by Lex players here.

Buuut it's double battle pass XP weekend & the new End Times quests are up so if you need a hand I'll be around Mop it up. One of the End Times is healing a million points of damage.

Are you sure they're not just using gyro? People can be pretty crazy with it. The replays also may not be 100% accurate to what actually happened. Though, considering how things in this game go, it's certainly possible the matchmaking is still borked, hee hee.

I've already maxed the current free pass, but I could still help you out with that. The million healing will just be time consuming, it's the four triple kills that are gonna be a pain! Probably just gonna have to hope I get lucky with Jenos's killer wail special.

Nah because I use gyro. Besides post match you can see user's profiles. Except non-Siwitch players.

I think I'm just about there for the current pass and when it comes to End Times I already got the only one I really wanted so I'm in no rush. I got one triple kill in that so far. Was using Zhin of all people. Got lucky & simply walked around & took out a Seris & two people she was healing.

Came back to this game after a long time off and I will say the Switch version has shown some improvement on the core gameplay. While the presentation still feels rough the shooting is still pretty good, even with a generous dose of aim-assist and favorable hit boxes.

To be fair if you want a casual hero shooter experience this is still better than Overwatch Quick Play.

I'm actually enjoying this game on Nintendo Switch. It's a stall game for me while waiting for the games that I really want to purchase on Switch. It's all good until they allowed cross-play.

The update from last Wednesday introduced a slew of bugs and problems, though I haven't checked to see if anything's been fixed since then. I guess this game is always going to be a bit of a mess. :(

The main menu has a big white line running vertically on the left side that expands or shrinks randomly every time you end up there. Audio seems extremely cluttered  and buggy at times during fights as well.

I feel like this game will never be bug free and there's always going to be a problem with it but for the most part the shooty shooty experience is still good.

I'm still a Furia main but I bought Ying and want to play her more.

Yeah, these are all issues that the last update brought, and it's on all platforms not just Switch. I guess it hasn't been fixed yet.

I think the issue is that the devs focus on the cosmetic stuff since that's what they're actually selling, so the actual playing of the game suffers.

I got kind of burnt out after completing the last Battle Pass so it was a good time to take a break anyway, though I could be drawn back in if you or anyone else here wanted to play sometime...

I've experienced an audio problem with the recent update as well. There's a non-stop shooting sound even while reloading when I used Vivian and Tyra.

Huh. Discovered something odd this morning. I know custom builds can have their names censored when you use certain rude words, but today I had one censored I didn't see coming. Had copied a Zhin build off of youtube that keeps you using Whirl a bit more often so wanted to name it "Beyblade". Turns out the in-game censoring didn't like that.
